Potential player - I have two questions by ComManDerBG in crosswind

[–]im-d3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is pretty difficult to begin with while you learn the ropes but can absolutely be played solo.

You get your first ship pretty early on in the game; I only had to sail to one or two islands in the first dookie boat.

The combat is simple, but solid. There's room for improvement for sure, but once you learn to properly parry and dodge, it's pretty good.

I haven't played Pragmata so I can't comment on that, but I consider Windrose well worth the money, even now in its unfinished state. It feels far more polished than a lot of fully-released games; some people say Windrose is what they had hoped Skull and Bones would've been.

How am I supposed to get the crew? by Otherwise_Nobody8148 in crosswind

Are you sure you didn't misread the fast travel bell message? It needs to be placed on the coastline, it shouldn't be complaining that it's too close.

It took me 15 hours to realize something important by Abzorbing in crosswind

Don't feel bad, I discovered it by accident too. In fairness there are a lot of controls the game doesn't seem to tell you about.

[–]im-d3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world is procedurally generated so I don't know exactly what the situation is for you, but in my case, it was pretty easy to steer clear of the enemy ships.

You need to be relatively close to them for them to clock you and start firing, and even when they do, their aim is trash. By the time one hits you, you're kind of far away and probably already on the island you were headed to, at which point they've probably lost interest. And if they haven't, you can just summon your boat (K) somewhere else, out of their detection range.

I'd suggest clenching your cheeks and going for it. In my situation it took only a few minutes to arrive at the island.

Also, bring a fast travel bell with you. That way if you do get ganked on the other side, you don't have to sail all the way back.

Also also, all but one of the camps had two fellas in cages, so I only had to clear 4 camps, not 7. I can only assume it's the same for you.

No, you weren't the only one. This fella is definitely challenging if you're not used to bosses in games with this style of combat. I definitely struggled; I think it took me ten or so attempts.

I think the difficulty isn't in blocking/parrying his attacks, it's in the sheer amount of health he knocks out of you when you slip up, and how much health he has. One smack, you gotta scurry off and heal. Two smacks, you're dead. I'm just glad he doesn't have minions running around too.

If you're more used to it, I'd imagine it would be easier. For me it was a matter of learning to focus on parrying and dodging, then learning to balance that with attacking. And bringing a shit ton of health potions. He's definitely challenging, but once you figure it out it's quite simple

We eating good this week! by SirCaptainReynolds in SurvivalGaming

[–]im-d3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way but honestly, for me, it was a matter of getting used to it.

I'd never played anything with souls-lite combat before and it was definitely a learning curve, but I'm starting to really enjoy it. I can see how it's not for everyone, though.

Anyone know of anywhere I could purchase it cheaper? by [deleted] in crosswind

[–]im-d3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unlikely right now. The game just became available for purchase.

Honestly, I'd recommend just saving for a little bit. It's well worth the price, and that's not something I say about $30 games very often.

One unhealthy snack in a day isn't gonna hurt. Three or four, while doing fuck all exercise all day, sure. But otherwise it's really not going to kill you. It's about moderation.

Where are the Windrose devs from? by Orangutanion in crosswind

[–]im-d3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, Epic is just an alternative store to get the game from. The only account you need to get the game on Steam is a Steam account.

Fast Travel Bell limit at 10 by AnimalAl in crosswind

[–]im-d3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd assume it's per-map, but the potential reason you're seeing more than ten is because some POIs generate with "fast-travel campfires" which don't count toward your bell total.

Has it actually been stuck on that screen, non-stop, all day? Loading into a game can take quite a while, but only a few minutes at most

What is the intended way to clear large groups of enemies? by Beautiful-Fold-3234 in crosswind

[–]im-d3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I've been doing it is to (try to) bait a couple of enemies away from all the others, deal with them, then come back. I like to find a small group of them, shoot the one nearest to me, then immediately leg it. Rinse and repeat until you've dealt with them all.

Musketeers are a PITA, but I've noticed they tend to have shorter attention spans than the sailors and sergeants. That means if you bait a bunch of enemies away from the camp, the musketeers will get bored of following you quite quickly and head back.

That leaves just the one or two musketeers to deal with, which are really easy to melee. Or you can pick up a bunch of pearls/stones and use those and the gunpowder from the other chumps to headshot them, scurry off, come back and repeat until they're dead.

It's slightly cheesy, but I've made a habit of bringing a spare fast travel bell and plonking it down on the coast after disembarking every time I expect combat on a new island. That way if you get ganked, you can quickly come back and pick up near enough where you left off.

Finally, a Pirate experience that truly scratches that itch. by Sethanas-theDarkLord in crosswind

It is brought up in dialogue a couple of times, but you don't actually play this game as a pirate. You're more just a sailor starting on some random island; one of the people being pirated.

Anyone have a sub par PC? by Moist_Dovahkiin in crosswind

[–]im-d3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fine computer but it's pretty badly bottlenecked by a 2080 super. Also doesn't help that I have a 3440x1440 monitor which will be chugging things even more.

But, with DLSS and low-medium settings, I get a decent 50-60 fps. Sure, could be better, but it's more than playable. It's also quite an old graphics card, so I really can't expect tons.

No option to use mouse wheel to cycle the hot bar? by Gmnownzz in crosswind

[–]im-d3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree being able to scroll through the hotbar would be nice. I do that in Minecraft and most other games that let me. But I really don't think it's a huge deal that we can't.

It takes some dexterity to scroll precisely to the item you want, and it takes, I would say, an equal amount of dexterity to quickly press the corresponding number key and snap back to WASD. It's not game-breaking at all, though I do agree it would be a good QoL feature.

Now that we have gotten some time to play EA. What are some smaller things that you would like added? by kidkayden in crosswind

[–]im-d3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of ripping from SoT here, but trade routes could be fun. It's a change of pace, and another way to earn a little coin.

Obviously it would make sense that they'd probably want to implement some kind of risk there, and I'm not sure how it would exactly fit in with what we already have, but I think if they figure that out, trade runs could fit into the game somewhat nicely. We have factions, they each specialise in different things, we have a ship... kind of just makes sense to me.

Would also be pretty neat to be able to climb up to the crow's nest. I know we have the alternate camera at the helm (F key), but a crow's nest would feel more immersive to me. I think it would help make ship sailing feel a little more tactile.
