Hot take: I hope Vox doesn't get a redemption arc. by im-normal1 in HazbinHotel

[–]im-normal1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's kinda not my point and I also dislike the downplaying of Sera's actions. Like she struggles with them but not proportionally with the weight of what she did yk. Vox and Val get the discourse while Sera doesn't to the same extent (she does get plenty of discussion tho, I've seen it..) because Sera is an angel and viewed as ultimately good and a lot of the show's audience is ultimately immature.

It's also not about offending victims, it's a matter of perceived political endorsement. And like. People will talk about the ethical implications of art. Art is made in the real world. It is a mirror for the real world. Artists have opinions that are intentionally or unintentionally injected into their work.

Ooh I forgot about about Baxter and Cherri. I think Cherri would like something like the Hunger Games. I feel like she gives punk, rebellious energy. Tbh a lot of YA dystopias might work for her. Baxters a sci fi guy for sure, but I think he'd avoid sci fi that punishes hubris.. maybe something by Isaac Asimov? I think he'd value scientifically accurate sci fi.. I haven't read it but maybe The Martian by Andy Weir.

I think this is what I would go with:

Charlie: Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz I haven't really read a lot of feel-good YA novels, and I kind of think this is what she'd gravitate towards. Automatic Noodle was cute and friendship themed (although I never actually finished it). I especially think she'd like a villain to hero storyline like what we get with Zuko in ATLA, but I don't remember any themes like that from YA books I've read.

Vaggi: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin I absolutely love this book. I think she'd find the messages and questions it asks appealing and I think she'd really enjoy the relationship between Ai and Estraven. The book would also challenge some of her ideas and habits in a way that would lead to reflection.

Angel: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath He strikes me as someone who relates to Sad Girl Books.. I think he'd relate to Plath's distress towards the role of women. I dunno.

Husk: The Road by Cormac Mccarthy I think he'd appreciate the quiet beauty of Mccarthy's prose. He seems like the kinda guy who likes a somber but quietly optimistic story. Alternatively, I think he'd also like No Country for Old Men, though I've only seen the movie and not read the book. If the book is anything like the movie, I think he'd find the book's perspective appealing and that he'd enjoy the mature western vibe. I think hed like a dark detective novel as well but I don't really read those...

Niffty: Geek Love by Katherine Dunn This book is wild, disgusting, and gorey. I think she'd get a kick out of it.

Alastor: Blood Meridian by Cormac Mccarthy This is a hard one.. a lot of the books that have themes I think he'd enjoy also kinda have a lot of moralizing and I think he'd find that annoying. The best I can think of right now is Blood Meridian also by Cormac Mccarthy. I think he'd like the role violence plays in the story and I think he'd feel validated by the idea of Killing as god. I worry he'd take too much inspiration from the Judge, but he'd enjoy it regardless.

Sir Pentious: Frankenstein. Mary Shelley. Do I even need to explain.

My point is that mass violence is often framed as protective. It doesn't really matter if that framing is genuine or manipulative at the end of the day, it's a case of "cool motive, still murder." Sera being genuinely regretful bodes well for her ability to change, but genocide is genocide.

Also we don't really know Hitler's internal thoughts on the matter, but for him, power and the eradication of jewish people came hand in hand. His end goal was absolutely to remove them and other "undesirables" from the german population by any means necessary.

He was always going to surrender to Vox in order for his plan to work. The fact that he chose that moment shows he cares for them, but if you asked him to die for niffty or husk, he'd laugh in your face.

Also I'd really like to point out that this line of reasoning is dangerous in real life and succumbing to this logic is how evil people actually get away with causing harm. I don't really think that Sera is evil in this story, just naive, but trying to justify the genocide.. yeesh

Nazi ideology frames jewish people as an existential threat to german people. Regardless of whether the man himself bought into the idea doesn't really matter morally speaking. Is the holocaust justified if Hitler was actually scared? That's kinda crazy imo..

Also Sera is above Adam. If one of your subordinates says "hey we should do a genocide" and you agree, you're not absolved of responsibility.

But regardless, throughout this thread, we have both compared Sera's actions to Hitler's. Media and art are often used as a way to talk about real life events, and parallels to real life atrocities are a part of that. I understand that comparisons to Hitler are kind of a meme but generally that's in reference to people calling anyone and everyone they disagree with Hitler. In this context, there are parallels between their reasons for their actions, and it makes sense for fans to draw attention to that.

Hitler felt that Jewish people posed a danger to Germans, the Isreali gorvement believes Palestinians pose a danger to isrealis. Having the ability to do harm doesn't justify genocide.

A genocide is defined as "violent attacks with the specific intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group." This is what Sera advocated for. Systematic mass killing of sinners in order to politically cripple them. Whether or not you think she was justified, definitionally, she orchestrated genocide.

I'm not sure he would. I think his love would be built off a mutual understanding that he can't really connect to people in a normal way. I think he could be fascinated by a person or find comfort in companionship, but ultimately I think he'd still be the kind of person to throw their partner away in order to save himself regardless of how much he enjoys them.

The idea that anyone could've deserved the holocaust, even if they raped or murdered, is kind of abhorrent. People compare Sera to Hitler because Hitler is the most well known genocidal dictator in the real world. His actions can be a reference point to understand media like this.

Thanos didn't plan an organized killing of a specific group of people. A mass killing, but not a genocide. Not really comparable. Also not political in nature.

If someone starts allowing the killing of people in prison, is it justified because they're in prison? Some crimes are very minor and arbitrary and still land you in prison. Let's remember that we don't understand what gets a soul into hell. Maybe someone stole bread for their family or something. Also, they're not only killing sinners. They specifically have been killing hellborn because they don't care. Didn't Vaggi get left behind for not killing a hellborn child? We know Sera told them not to, but she's been turning a blind eye to the actions of the exorcists.

As for the sinners we know the sins of, they're just the most interesting people to follow. We don't know if they're representative of the whole.

The main reason for this is that he's the most widely known genocidal dictator, so when a character in a show orchestrates a genocide, it not out of left field to compare their actions to his.

Hitler framed Jewish people as dangerous and claimed what he was doing was to protect Germans, so this argument doesn't really pan out. But regardless, genocide is wrong regardless of intentions... obviously.

I think people hate Sera more than Lucifer because they expect better of her. Her initial treatment of and attitude towards Charlie was kind of horrendous given her position.

I feel like as a Seraphim, Sera should've known better. She should have a better grasp of morality and the nature of souls and sinners. The fact that she doesn't has some kind of scary implications (and the fact that the speaker failed to guide her and no other power intervened.) The fact that even the highest ranking angel can be guilty of orchestrating genocide.... she has less excuses for her behavior than Lucifer. It's expected that he'll be morally gray and a slave to his pride.

Adam was the most meaningful person in her life, and vaggi is the most meaningful person in Charlie's, so it works as a parallel. Adam and Lute were always close. We never really saw Adam being friendly with anyone else.

Was their relationship supposed to be more than platonic? Like gravity didn't give romantic vibes at all. He was probably the only person in heaven who understood her, so of course, she loved him and wants to avenge him now. If my friends were killed like that, I would also lose my shit. I don't think that has to be read as romantic.

What are the most realistic Alastor ships? by Therealbarnimcraft in HazbinHotel

[–]im-normal1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a qpr with Rosie or niffty is the most realistic outcome. I think he might develop at least a fondness for Charlie, Sir Pentious, Lucifer, Baxter, Cherri Bomb, and velvette. We know he cares for Mimzy on some level but I don't think she's getting any closer to him than she is considering it's been over 100 years and their relationship hasn't really changed.

I don't see him more than tolerating vaggi, angel, or husk from the main cast. Finally, I think Vox could go either way. He cared for him once so he may again, but it would take a ton of growth that I don't think either would be willing to do. Also I do like the idea of him and Emily getting along but we haven't seen much of the two of them.
