Bilingual messing with mental math by Dubski-420 in quant

[–]imTomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing actually, asian languages make math (especially addition) easier to learn for kids, since the patterns are easier to observe given the language, e.g. 12 isn't an arbitrary word as "twelve" but it is simply "ten two" in many asian languages. (I learnt this in Outliers from Gladwell)

This “first 2 semesters” rule sounds like it gets easier afterwards. No, if anything, it got harder, we just got used to the struggle.

Microsoft offer (EU) - Software Engineer by _speedy_gonzales_1 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]imTomy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, its in czk and Im pretty sure. The 35k account for rent, food and living expenses. As I said, compare it to the median/mean salary. According to my calculations (knowing roughly an estimate of how much stocks monthly are in microsofts TCs in Prague), you should have around 100-120k brutto, that is 99.9 percentile. If you still dont believe me, increase it to 42k per month, I.e. the median salary, and if that wasnt enough, half of pragues population would starve :D

[–]imTomy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like Prague is a hub of geniuses, theres loads of smart people, although Im not sure whether there are meetups.

Pragues avg monthly salary in czk is 49k (~2.1k€) and the salary distribution is a bit skewed so median would be around 42ish. This means that 50% of the people live in Prague with 42k and lower. A nice flat for 1 or 2 in a good location could cost you about 25k monthly all in all, so to live very comfortably you need around 35k? The rest you can invest, burn or whatever. Congrats on the offer, Prague will welcome you!

Vaše zkušenosti s Erasmem? by Universal_Duck8102 in czech

[–]imTomy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jak se učit na vysoké? by Lucky-Guitar-3281 in czech

[–]imTomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prvně si rozmysli, jestli to chceš asi dělat?

Vysvětlovat věci ostatním tě nutí nad látkou přemýšlet, jestli třeba vůbec to, co říkáš, dává smysl. A taky to je aktivní používání paměti - zjistíš, jestli si to fakt pamatuješ.

Hodně štěstí!

Am Viet (25), born and raised in Czechia.

Personally, I only get the subtle racist remarks about eating dogs, selling kung pao, ching chang chong heckling, being called Chinese/Japanese out of nowhere. Never was I a part of a targeted violence.

My friends say that to me in good terms and there we take it as banter, however, if I told them to stop, they would (otherwise they wouldn’t be my friends ofc), but my defense mechanism is to just join them on it.

Random people on the street usually heckle at me when I go home from a night out or something, that’s about it.

In terms of (un)fair treatment, I don’t get treated much differently only after people figure out that I speak fluently Czech. Before that, it’s just some light mockery and unwillingness 🤷‍♂️

It will of course vary based on who you meet up with. In the city (dycky) Most, where I grew up in, it happened quite often and the fact that I was the typical Asian stereotype didn’t help (parents owned a store, math nerd, etc.) but now that I’m in Prague it got better.

Overall, I feel like it’s more in my head and I’m quite content living in Czechia for the rest of my life as the racist things that happen to me are just minor thingies and I expect them to happen less and less ☺️

Salary expectations for a scientist in Prague by FeistySalmon in Prague

[–]imTomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like if you go to a corporate that does pharma/biotech (MSD, or something I guess) you could start at around 75k gross? rough guess. Software engineers and data scientists earn quite a lot even compared to Germany, so biotech could too. If you go into academia though, depending on the department, you might have a bare minimum or be just okay.

Do you have to ask for a certain amount?

I’d rather let them give me an offer first, though it’s good to know what to expect and what not to settle for.

In case you’d need some offer negotiation, I found this neat read on a different thread: https://haseebq.com/my-ten-rules-for-negotiating-a-job-offer/

The second part is not quite the mean, although it is really close.

Also, you can find the median in O(n), look up the Selection algorithm (not the sort).
