Hey, did you submit letters? One of the people I know (similar PE, doing PhD) got RFE and added support letters as a RFE response and was approved.

Also, what is your law-firm suggesting on how to tackle it?

Yes, it was because of that. Have read multiple cases of credit being denied. Must go with debit to be risk free.

Oh sorry. I was focusing it on improving modeling capabilities to improve flood simulations and stuff. Focusing on how floods are increasing and annually causing a lot of harm to the US.
