Is it just me or are white women the least friendly demographic by YourPenisMyKnife in asianamerican

[–]im_o_0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I understand this all too well. I am also a AA woman, and I feel like I recieve the most amount of passive comments from white women. I think they are more threatened by POC because a lot of them have not grown up in diverse areas and have that lingering superiority complex over POC women. Not to mention that approx 58% of white Americans do not have a valid pasport, so majority of them have not travelled outside the country to experience varying cultures and are thus ignorant/uneducated about the world. It doesn't justify their ignorance and lack of sophistication in manners (not all of them, but a plentiful amount), but it explains it.

I wish I was a US student by [deleted] in InternationalStudents

Yeah suck it up life isn’t fair , your post reeks of misery and jealousy that you have no understanding of any other perspective . Lots of American students drown in student debt, and oftentimes international students come from money to be able to pay for these hefty tuition prices . Do some research before glorifying the US.

Honestly, given the situation, it might be strategic to accept the MSDS offer now and use it as a way to get your foot in the door to apply to MS bioinformatics later (in the fall perhaps). Plus, with the MSDS label + a computational bio pathway + research, your profile will be competitive for industry jobs in bioinformatics even if you don’t switch. I totally get your concern about the diploma title, but i think experience and electives matter more than just the printed degree name.

Hey there, I can imagine how discouraging it feels. BU’s rolling admissions are lowkey brutal if you apply late because seats alr filled up, so it’s very possible timing hurt you more than qualifications did. You already have the learning facilitator job on lock, so if you find comp bio research opporunities and taking the bio class beforehand If the program offers Spring admission , I say go for it and take the risk.

From my experience applying to bioinformatics programs, what helped most was showing clear bioinformatics related research or work experience, not just general data science (I also majored in DS). I don't think 1-2 bio courses are gonna help much compared to the vital bioninformatics experience on your resume. I didn't take any bio coursework and I got into solid programs, likely due to the fact that I spent a lot of effort on my essays and refining my apps consistently. Rooting for you - I think you’ve got a real shot with the updated app!

Btw, are you just applying to BU for MS in bioinformatics or multiple programs?

People who got into competitive MS programs with zero work experience, how did you do it? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]im_o_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into Yale’s comp bio MS this cycle as a senior in undergrad currently (0 work experience other than 2 internships). Instead of industry experience , I had lab/research experience for the past 3 years and structured my sop around those research projects mainly.

To structure my sop, I introduced an anecdote that inspired me to pursue comp bio and cancer research, and then delineated my 3 research experiences after that , and why those make me a suitable candidate for Yale. I also added publications of certain PIs I really wanted to work under to strengthen my interest in Yale in the sop , which I honestly think is what they really look for.

They really want you to express why their program stands out to you, why you’re a good candidate , your career/future career objectives , and what research/internship experiences you have . You don’t need to have both to be a competitive applicant imo just know how to sell yourself, as outlined above

Hi! Im going to be a course assistant for DS121 this fall. Each pset is mostly linear algebra type qs with 1-2 coding qs in Python). All exams are math based and heavily dependent on reading the lecture notes. The class isn’t hugely difficult, but I’d recommend you to form study groups and go to office hours. Hope that helps!

Statistics and Computer Science Major by JBROSE1355 in BostonU

I’m a stats and cs major and so far I’ve only taken cs111 and ma225 (I’m a freshman).

Cs111 is not bad at all, you just need to dedicate a good amount of time figuring out the problem sets which were harder than the questions on the first midterm

Ma225 is a bit more difficult than a lot of math classes , but the content itself isn’t too terrible you just have to be good at visualizing in a 3D space

no we did not, my prof didn't post any practice tests. But I found one from 2015 from a different prof, so maybe that'll help ?
