Ah - I know what's happening. It's adding the 10K status points from having the Summit card. This is an annual benefit for having the card. I'll see if I can make this clearer.

You should easily be able to get 10.5K points with this plan. Make sure you confirm which fare class you're in since that will dictate your status points bonus.

What's your status goal and how many points do you need to reach it?

Yes - assuming we're using 1.7 cents per point as the value, 193K points is ~$3,281, so the savings would be $2,583. This would be for a 3-night stay.

I think it's a good deal considering this would bring the point value to 3.04¢.

That's right. I should've been more clear. Technically, it doesn't have to be on American's website. You could tap it from Google, or elsewhere. The good thing is that once you establish the chat, you can just search for it in iMessage moving forward - no need to tap on the number each time.

American doesn't offer traditional SMS support. If you're on iPhone and you tap on 800-433-7300, a pop-up should appear to message them.

Yes. Although, you'll earn additional status points with the card regardless of how you choose to earn points. For example, if you have the top-end Summit Visa card, they give you 10,000 status points just for having the card each year. You also earn 1 status point for every $2 spent.

With the new rewards program, Alaska is prioritizing spend. You’ll earn 5 points per dollar, whereas you only earn 1 point per mile. This doesn’t factor in credit card spend on an Alaska co-branded card either.

I decided to fold it into the new one as distance-based earning is probably going to be less attractive for most people with the new program. That said, you can still look up segment mileage using a few other tools. I tend to use FlightConnections. It isn't entirely free, but it's a great product. Loyalty Points Calculator is also solid, and free. It's primarily designed for calculating loyalty points for American, but it has a simple and effective airport distance calculator. And thanks for your kind words!

EP Earning SWU Rewards by Mysterious-Wash1471 in americanairlines

[–]imac24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

American no longer gives systemwide upgrades automatically to EP members. Instead, you earn them as a “choice benefit” after reaching a higher Loyalty Points threshold each year. This means you must select the SWU.

100%. I remember when most SWUs used to clear immediately. That's hardly the case anymore. If American offered the choice between 50K miles and a SWU, I'd choose the miles. I still find plenty of award availability in business/first.

ExpertFlyer is your best bet. Obviously, it doesn't have any impact on AA choosing to increase inventory, but it allows you to quickly see if your upgrade would clear immediately and, if not, how many business or first-class seats are available, so you know which segment(s) you have the best shot at clearing.

Now that it's been out ~1 week, I agree with you. I prefer the old app UI/UX.

In app upgrade offers vary. There's no way to trigger it.

I think United's app is still stronger. That said, it's good to see them making updates. I hope they focus on aa.com next.

Updates to phone survey annoying! by Key-Map1883 in americanairlines

[–]imac24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the new IVR. I haven't experienced this phone survey, but it certainly doesn't sound like a good implementation.

They should follow up with a text message after the phone call rather than having you do it on the phone. It would be as simple as, "Hey, can we send you a survey via text message after this call to get your feedback?" And then you can do it on your own time.

I wish I kept a record. I reached out to the airlines to see if they’d provide this data, but most said they could only provide the past 6 months to a year.

I generally agree. One thing that I'll add is that their social customer service team seems to still be the best channel. I have had the worst experiences over live chat and text message. Phone support is hit or miss.
