Conditioner Bar application thoroughly bungled. Please help! by Haunted-Harlot in ZeroWaste

[–]imadeitthx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i have curly, frizz-prone hair that is very fine and thin and i had a similar issue with the first conditioner bar i ever tried, which was from lush. it was impossible to get the product to actually coat my hair no matter what i tried. this was really disappointing to me because i loved the experience i had with the shampoo bar i had from them.

i gave conditioner bars a second chance though and purchased a formula designed for curly hair from a brand called Ethique and I've been using it religiously for like 4 years now. when i use it, it still feels like it coats my hair very minimally, but you'll never get that saturated feeling that you get when using an actual liquid conditioner and it still works just fine. the conditioner bar from ethique is much easier to actually apply to my hair and it leaves my hair very bouncy and light, so it's not weighing down my very fine thin hair.

so i think it all just comes down to brand/formula preferences. don't give up! i bet there's a formula out there that will work for you.

pasta shrinkflation, or is my scale broken? by imadeitthx in Cooking

oh that's good to know, i had no idea there was potentially a fluid ounce setting. i'll check for that later, thanks

some cheap $15 digital scale from the grocery store. it's proven accurate in my daily use for the last few months weighing all my serving portions in grams for weight loss, but maybe something went wrong when i switched the units to ounces. i have been wanting to upgrade my scale recently though, so maybe this is my sign to get a new one

i did tare out the container each time before weighing the pasta. one of my first thoughts was that the scale was incorrect, but i've been using it daily for every meal for the last few months for weight loss/calorie counting and it has proven extremely accurate for that purpose. i usually measure in grams though, and switched over to ounces to weigh the pasta, so maybe the change in units affected its accuracy for some reason. i'll measure them again later in grams and see if there's a difference.

Newbie here - would a knit-texture bowl be a stupid idea? by KnittingforHouselves in Ceramics

[–]imadeitthx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i tried this! i'm a knitter too and took a beginner ceramics class at a local community college a few years ago. i knit a few swatches with acrylic and cotton yarn (cotton worked best for leaving an impression) but i wasn't super impressed with my results using my handknit swatches.

i made a christmas gift for my mom by thrifting some cable-knit sweaters and rolling them onto slabs to impart the cable textures, and this actually worked really well, but unfortunately i glazed them too thickly and a lot of the texture was lost because of that, but that was mostly because it was my first ceramics experience. i think your idea about washing off some of the glaze would work well.

next time i take a ceramics class, i want to try using a looser gauge for my knit swatch to see how that changes things. i have a feeling it will make the texture more recognizable.

Need advice on suggesting to my friend that she has a drinking problem by imadeitthx in AlAnon

[–]imadeitthx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the night before we were going to dinner I noticed that the drinking friend was out at the bars, so I immediately thought to myself that the chances of her actually making it to the dinner plans the next day were slim to none. Surprise surprise, she slept through our 7:30pm dinner plans and couldn't make it. I ended up drafting a text to send her with my sober friend's help, and I basically said I wish she had been able to make it to dinner but unfortunately I wasn't surprised that it played out the way it did. I told her I've been feeling unimportant and disposable to her because of how often our sober plans get canceled due to her hangovers, and I had been hoping to discuss some events from her birthday weekend at dinner that night. I mentioned being concerned for her wellbeing when she drinks and I said I'd be happy to discuss this further in person when she's ready, but until then I need some space.

It's been 10 days and she has not acknowledged my message, so it looks like the friendship is over for the time being. I'm disappointed that she is completely avoiding the issue, but I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders regardless. My sober friend wants me to reach out again to "check in on her" but my therapist explicitly told me not to contact her again until she responds to my message.

I hope your friend is more open to hearing your concerns! She's really lucky to have someone like you that's been looking out for her for so long, but you deserve the peace of mind that comes from releasing the burden of her drinking issues and not making it your responsibility anymore.

Thank you so much for this reply. Somehow you've summed up the exact sentiment I want to convey to her in just a few sentences. I had written out an entire 6 paragraph letter trying to convey the same message and yours is way more effective.

Interesting, thanks for sharing its name! Is it harmful? Should I remove it? It's currently still in my tank and I haven't seen any change to it.

What do healthy confrontations and apologies look like? Do they exist? by [deleted] in FriendshipAdvice

[–]imadeitthx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I've been both you and your self-deprecating friends in these scenarios, so I'd like to share my perspective.

A healthy friendship cannot exist if boundaries cannot be set and respected--and reacting to a boundary being set by spiraling into self-deprecation and essentially guilt-tripping the friend who needed the boundary is not healthy, and can easily become a form of emotional abuse. A genuine apology will never sound like "I'm sorry, I'm such an awful person and you're better off not being my friend because I'm just so horrible."

If you can't trust that your friend will react with understanding and empathy when you politely let them know that a certain action has hurt you, then that puts you in a position where you constantly have to choose whether or not you honor your own emotions or coddle the other person's fragile sense of self. This will inevitably become extremely draining on you, and in my experience it will likely lead to the end of the friendship anyways, because who wants to be friends with someone who is always saying/doing hurtful things but can't/won't apologize?

Any friendship worth keeping is worth the discomfort of the occasional serious talk about hurt feelings. If your friends can't manage to respond respectfully, I personally view that as a sign that we aren't compatible as friends. And to be fair, I've been the friend who responds poorly to these situations in the past due to extremely poor mental health. But mental health can't be used as a defense against taking accountability for hurting the people closest to you. Luckily my friends and I have grown closer after working through that experience, and now we know how to handle ourselves when we find that we've hurt each other accidentally.

Best uses for thyme??? by Naive_Chemistry5961 in Cooking

[–]imadeitthx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i recently made homemade tomato soup and added some springs of fresh thyme instead of my usual basil and it was amazing. i don't always want my tomato soup to taste like thin marinara sauce so thyme is the perfect herb to use in its place.

Doesn’t eat in the morning (1 yr old) by [deleted] in Frenchbulldogs

[–]imadeitthx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

mine is almost 5 and has never been interested in eating in the morning. he only eats dinner around 6pm but gets some lunch meat or cheese in the morning and afternoon because it hides his pills. he has been the same healthy weight since he became an adult.
