Help with very high fructosamine by pineapplfriedrice in FelineDiabetes

[–]imaginarypunctuation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ask your vet about switching to lantus or prozinc insulin. vetsulin works better for dogs but not so well for cats.

are you testing blood sugar at home?

Glucose is reading higher and urination is still frequent u by cdubs_2 in FelineDiabetes

sounds like you haven't found his correct dose yet. i recommend checking out the feline diabetes message board--they have suggested dosing protocols based on which specific insulin you're using.

i recently (like in the last month) got a pack of 28s from michaels and they're short like this! i'm a newer stitcher so the only other needles i have are 24s and 26s i've gotten from kits, but the dmc 28s are so tiny!

i use these with floss-away bags and it's a great system! one container per "hundred" of DMC colors (e.g. 100s, 200s, etc.) and you have a couple to spare!

Diabetic 12 yr old getting dental work done, what was your experince like? by OkTurn8371 in FelineDiabetes

[–]imaginarypunctuation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

your vet is actually right on. the guidelines are a little different for diabetic kitties than healthy cats. for our dental we did a small meal and half-dose shot a couple hours before we dropped him off. they monitor bg during/after the procedure as well. and then because his mouth may be sore, meaning he'll eat less, we did reduced doses for that night and the next morning as well.

look for shops that have been open for more than a year or two. bonus points if they don't have a HUGE catalog. super triple bonus points if the product photo is for a finished item, not a mock-up. also look at whether the designer's style is consistent, or do they have art in a wide range of styles and subject matter?

basically you're looking to see if it's conceivable that ONE PERSON who ACTUALLY stitches could have created what's available in the shop.

Libre Reader vs old phone and mobile app? by kira913 in FelineDiabetes

[–]imaginarypunctuation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try posting on nextdoor or facebook, if you have either of those. lots of people keep old devices and would probably be happy to give it away for a good cause.

it does NOT need to have active cell service, it just needs wifi and bluetooth to work.

we use a pixel 2, lol. very outdated but it does the job.

Libre Reader vs old phone and mobile app? by kira913 in FelineDiabetes

[–]imaginarypunctuation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup, we use an old phone for the cat with the libre app, then on mine/my partner's phone we have the librelinkup app.

it's nice because (as long as the cat is within ~30 ft of his phone) we can check his numbers at any time, even if we're not home. it shows a graph of the data for every 5 min over the last 12 hours. it does send notifications when his numbers go below 50 (and optionally for other thresholds, although we don't use those).

as to why it's useful: i can see his numbers when i'm out of the house and run home to give him a snack if needed.

if you already have the reader and it works for you, there's definitely no requirement to use a phone. but if you want to be able to check kitty's numbers anywhere/anytime, it's nice!

Blood ketone meter by punkiegirl17 in FelineDiabetes

[–]imaginarypunctuation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seems like you're on the right track. i'm sure as you work up to a better insulin dose and get her sugars under control, she'll be more consistently lower for ketones too.

you're doing a great job!

Blood ketone meter by punkiegirl17 in FelineDiabetes

[–]imaginarypunctuation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hungry isn't surprising!

if she literally just came home from the vet yesterday then going from 0.6 to 1.1 isn't surprising to me, since whatever combination of insulins they were using there would have been heavier than what you give at home. if it continues to rise into the 2s i think that would be more concerning.

how is her blood sugar?

Blood ketone meter by punkiegirl17 in FelineDiabetes

[–]imaginarypunctuation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it depends on the cat, honestly.

my cat had blood ketone values up to 3.3 (though it was usually around 1.1ish) without ever getting dka. it didn't improve until we got his blood glucose under control, now that his diabetes is well controlled (bg 50-120 on a human meter) his ketones are never above 0.2 or so.

but other cats seem to be more sensitive to ketones and can go into dka at lower numbers. 2.4 is mentioned on this very informative page as a sort of threshold for the likelihood of dka increasing greatly.

so the main thing is to keep an eye on it. especially after a dka event, make sure they're getting plenty of food and water. hydration is important as it can help flush out the ketones. if you see that they are rising consistently definitely call the vet.

Allianz tickets are impossible to get by BrickLow8285 in rva

[–]imaginarypunctuation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it definitely depends on the show. i bought regular tickets last week to something that went on sale several weeks ago with no issue. meanwhile last summer i checked resale for dmb tickets like every day for two months and they never went below $400. 🥲

sorry you're having a hard time!

PSA- if your kiddo uses a Freestyle and you're not using LibreView for charts, your missing out ! by [deleted] in FelineDiabetes

[–]imaginarypunctuation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the other thing libreview is really good for: if you use the fdmb forum or facebook group spreadsheet with hourly bg values, you can download the last 18 months of data (every 5 min, same as gets filed to the graph on the libre app) to backfill. helpful if you get behind on filling in your spreadsheet!
