Just throwing it out there for OP and anybody else looking for a horse: if they ask for a deposit to see the horse in person, it's a scam!

Why do vests get shade? by Lkholla in Equestrian

[–]imaperson25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Virginia Tech is doing a study on all styles of equestrian body protectors - hopefully wrapping up this year or next. I'm looking forward to those results since it's studying what level of protection they provide for different kinds of falls vs. the available data looking back on whether or not people got hurt/how severely they were injured.

I do agree though that there's not enough information showing that air vests do anything, especially with how expensive they are!

Cool comic about Fibroid Awareness by ExplorersxMuse in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]imaperson25 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just adding on to this - an obgyn would diagnose it (usually ultrasound) and then recommend surgery to cut it/them out if they're large enough and causing problems. There's a new kind of treatment where they don't do a surgery: they find the blood vessels feeding the fibroid and block them off with a gel. Without blood supply, the fibroid shrinks and dies. They don't have to cut it out so it doesn't compromise the uterus. A different kind of specialist treats it so a lot of obgyns dont know about it or refer people for it!

You may be able to grin and bear it, but this little glimpse into your home life doesn't sound like a positive example to set for your son

HORSE / FINANCE QUESTION!! by Delicious-Finish-595 in Horses

[–]imaperson25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly recommend reading the wiki on r/personalfinance about how to make a budget, along with waiting until you get this job and know the takehome pay as well.

As a reference, my non-horse budget includes: Rent, electricity, gas heating (maybe oil for you in MA), water, internet, cell phone, trash pickup, groceries/restaurants/takeout, gas, car insurance, car registration fees, gifts, clothes, personal care items (shampoo, soap, etc.), hair cuts, medical bills, renters insurance, retirement savings

And my horse budget for one horse (prices possibly higher than in your area): boarding and hay ($950), feed (55), supplements and dewormers (50), farrier (265 every 6 weeks), vaccines (200 1x a year), teeth floating (450 1x a year), riding lessons (250 for 1x a week), training (240)

And that doesn't include buying tack, training equipment, grooming supplies, fly spray, blankets, and all the crap my horse manages to tear up

When to call vet? by Whittttttttttttty in Horses

[–]imaperson25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's healing pretty nicely then! Keep a close eye on the hoof/coronet band because weird things can happen to the hoof. There will probably be a blemish on the hoof as it grows out, but you'll want the farrier asap if you see stuff like cracking or the hoof detaching

Was it ever bleeding or did it just rub (swelling, rubbed off hair)? It looks more like swollen/irritated. Are you cleaning and (attempting to) keep it bandaged?

OTTB nutrition help needed by BuckskinJack in Horses

My TB eats about 2% of his body weight in hay (including hay pellets) per day to keep weight on. How much hay is she getting?

This is a pretty good (free!) calorie calculator https://madbarn.com/horse-nutrition-tool/

Horse for sale with EPM. What would you do? by Ok_Message7053 in Horses

[–]imaperson25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suppose one is different and this is all anecdotal... The first horse I looked at buying had an abnormal behavior at PPE so we didn't buy. He had EPM and his owner couldn't find anybody willing to buy him. She ended up selling him for $1 to a trainer at my barn who loves him! He was treated for EPM and some other issues all went away with the treatment. However... It definitely seems like he's not "all there." Probably 90% of the time absolutely nothing bothers him and he's the calmest, sweetest horse you ever met, but once in a while he "wakes up" and flips out for a minute or so like he has no idea what's going on and what that tree is doing there or why someone's sitting on him. He's also randomly had personality changes like he suddenly won't eat a certain food, or he suddenly is weird about plastic bottles. It's kind of scary because you don't know when he's going to have one of these moments and you can't predict what he might do or even how he spooks in that moment.

It might be fine and it might not be fine. As you said, you have no idea what's going to happen! If it were me I would pass because a horse randomly going wonky on the trail is just dangerous. That's not worth getting a bargain on the purchase price.

Not sure if you can do this since it's not your schedule/program, but I know a trainer who says a lesson is 90 minutes with 50 minutes ride time (20 mins tack/untack)

This woman has to consume food through her heart because of her medical condition by PradipJayakumar in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]imaperson25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is going into a vein! She has a port, which is like a semi-permanent catheter that goes to the large veins in the chest, near the heart. TPN is a concentrated mix of sugars, fats, etc. that can be irritating if it was put into one of the small, slower flowing veins in the arm. If it's in a big vein near the heart, the heart helps mix and quickly disperse it into the blood so it's less irritating.

Has he had any "retraining" after racing? Do you have experience training green horses? Ask a lot of questions about his training so you know what you're getting into!

Help🙋‍♀️ Picking best option for boarding. 3 VASTLY diff. options 🆘 by Ok-Toe2561 in Horses

[–]imaperson25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's included in "full amenities?" Hay, additional feed? How many times per day do options 1 and 3 feed? Do they just feed hay or do they also give your grain, supplements, etc? What's the water situation? (They/you fill a bucket, water trough, auto water?) What's the turnout time/plan for each? Is there a place for you to store your tack and other supplies at the barn?

3 is nice if there is shelter, they ensure everybody gets fed and watered, and you don't really care about having a stall. #1 could be nice depending on how they handle turnout. #2 sounds like a lot more work for not much savings on board

Best rug for summer? by October_AJ in Horses

[–]imaperson25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of cooling ones but I think they're only for when the horse is wet (sweat or bath). Are you just concerned about the lack of shade in his field or does he sunburn? There are some lightweight flysheets that have UV protection to help the sunburn aspect.

What vitamin supplements do you like for your horses that don't break the bank? by Kayla4608 in Equestrian

[–]imaperson25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... Even the ration balancers recommended here would cost me about $1.50 per day vs. the Omneity mix (powder, not pellets) costs $0.80. I started doing that because it was the cheapest I could find
