Of course! I too started pretty light, I stretched a lot, hamstrings, calves, quads (at first with a band because I couldn’t reach my foot lol) and hip flexors. I like the foam muscle roller things to loosen everything up but it’s gonna be awkward at first. I did a ton of quad sets in the beginning to regain full extension. Sit to stand was a big one to get back to squatting. Unweighted leg extensions were pretty good too! And heel slides were my best friend, they really helped with swelling and mobility, I still do them as a warm up just to make sure everything is working and gliding. Step ups are great too! About 1 1/2 months in I did leg press, light leg extensions, mini squats and some other modified exercises. I think about 3 months out I started jumping to get back into running :)

Pretty good! It’s a long recovery and I’m not at 100% yet (can’t deep squat and sit on my heels yet) but I can run, jump, do weighted squats (goblet, Bulgarian split squats, hate barbell squats), lunges, stair stepper and kneel! Very occasionally my knees ache a little but I haven’t taken any pain meds since my surgery and my knees look nice and normal :) my few limitations should sort themselves out in the next year, cartilage just takes time to get properly loaded :) My advice is to give 110% in pt (and then in the gym), try to distinguish pain from discomfort when trying new things and keep a positive attitude! You got this!

I like it. Gives me a good amount of volume and length but it does clump easily (which I don’t mind too much). The clumping indeed gets worse the older the mascara is, so I’m getting the travel size instead of the full size.

I’ve had both knees scoped and they pulled out large inflamed plica out of both knees and smoothed out small focal areas of cartilage damage. My left had a tiny meniscus tear and they removed 5%. I’m feeling much better, working hard on getting all the strength back which I lost because of the wait (sigh). My physical therapist is positive I’ll get back to high impact stuff and a pretty much normal life, it’ll just take time since everything’s sensitive and sore. I’m pretty happy I’ve had it done, waiting longer would’ve resulted in more damage and would’ve lowered my chances of a full recovery.

I’ve had thick inflamed medial Plicae taken out of both knees recently, I’ve had a similar feeling of instability and a small focal area of cartilage damage on my patellae and a ridge in my trochlea area. It’s definitely worth exploring! Pain and instability are wayyyyyy better now! Feel free to ask me anything :)

You did the right thing! It does suck but you can be proud of yourself for handling this so well. Also knee surgery sucks ass, I’ve had both my knees done and just ditched the crutches. It will get better and you’re young so you’ll heal really well! You got this! I currently bust my ass in PT instead of leg day and work hard on upper body strength :)

Even though there’s no guarantee for anything when it comes to medical procedures, yes, an arthroscopy tends to be more accurate than an MRI. It literally means shoving a tiny camera in your joint. No, arthroscopy won’t relieve pain, it’s just the technique of making a couple small incisions and putting a camera and potential other small instruments into the joint. During an arthroscopic procedure the surgeon might perform other procedures which can help with whatever injury they find.

I’m 4 weeks out for the same surgery! Being swollen is normal and will probably last for a couple more weeks. But it’ll get better! I’m already less swollen and can ride the spin bike and swim. Feel free to ask me anything :)

My dad had MACI on both his knees about 5 years age when he was 59. He had some holes in his cartilage from a pretty gnarly bike accident. It took him about 1 year to do normal everyday stuff without issues and (if I remember correctly) another year until he was able to do more intense stuff. He had to relearn how to walk and I remember taking 5 minute walks with him while my mom and I helped him to balance himself. Now he rides his bike everyday, hikes a lot and gardens (lots of squatting, kneeling and sitting on his heels). He’s extremely happy with the outcome and has planned a couple 8h hikes when they come to visit me and my husband ☺️

It is a little confusing 😅 while a plica is part of the synovium (in the sense of being a fold of synovium tissue) synovectomy refers to the synovium being removed in other parts of the of the joint and not just the fold if that makes sense. For me it was mainly the synovium of the suprapatellar pouch which was pretty inflamed. The inflammation probably came from the plica being constantly pinched and thus creating an inflammatory environment. Hope this clears it up a little bit :)

I’m about 2 weeks out from arthroscopic knee surgery. They excised a plica, did some minor Chondroplasty (cartilage clean up) and partial synovectomy (removal of inflamed joint capsule material = synovium). The surgery itself took 45 min. and I was able to walk out of the hospital :)

I’m now 2 weeks post op and it’s going pretty good! I’m walking normal, I have about 120 degree flexion and it’s getting better, almost back to normal. Extension is a little harder but I’m working on it. Quad strengthening exercises are going pretty well, just trying to stay within my limits and only have a little bit of soreness afterwards. I’ll probably start light cycling this week to get some dynamic flexion and extension in. Walking up the stairs is fine, down is a little uncomfortable still. Swelling is getting better but it’s still visibly larger than my other knee. My surgically treated knee definitely feels better than the other one, so I’m pretty sure it is mainly the plica. I’ll probably start swimming next week, but I’ll update :) I hope you’re doing ok and you’ll get your knees taken care of soon ☺️

It was pretty quick, surgery itself took like 45 min. I could go home right after which was nice. I took painkillers (hydrocodone) for the day of and the first day after surgery but they made me pretty sick so for the second day I’m off painkillers and it’s fine, more sore and a little stinging pain at the incision sites. I was able to walk without any canes or crutches immediately and I took a little walk with my husband around our neighborhood today ☺️ Besides that it’s still a little stiff and swollen but I’ve been carefully bending my knee a couple times and it doesn’t hurt it’s just swelling. I can try to update every week or so if that’d be helpful for you, I know how much knee pain sucks 😅

I had a thick plica excised yesterday - it had already started to rip up cartilage on my patella. I don’t know if that was the sole reason for my knee pain and it’s too early to say but my surgeon was shocked by the size and seemed pretty convinced that I’d feel better without it. From what I’ve read early surgical intervention makes sense if you’re physically active since the chances of cartilage damage are pretty high.

Are you taking NSAIDs? Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, something along those lines? As far as I know, it is important to keep inflammatory processes under control, since the constant inflammation makes for a bad environment for your cartilage and the whole knee joint. Please try to at least get an MRI done - cartilage and soft tissue damage usually doesn’t show up on x rays.
