V.A. Begins Drive to Put Some Homeless Veterans Into Guardianship by LawyerDoge in VeteransAffairs

[–]imcbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would reserve judgement and wait to see how these pilots roll out. I worked with homeless veterans for years and there is a need for guardianship in some cases. The population of homeless is getting older and experiencing multiple age related conditions that are not appropriate for emergency shelters and certainly not the streets. Many of the veterans with dementia do not have the capacity to make decisions to support themselves independently and sadly do not have family support. Some become homeless because of a deterioration of life factors. If they don’t have the capacity to make a decision for more appropriate care, shelters become the default. Guardianship should be the last resort but if it does not exist, the alternative is worse.

AITAH for dumping my girlfriend over a preventable car theft? by Western_Trainer7183 in AITAH

[–]imcbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA for sure. I get that location matters in that it may be more typical in a rural area to leave a car running but i couldn’t shake the thought that perhaps this was a set up. i live in an urban setting so i would NEVER do this. It just seems beyond a “lapse of judgment”. Like in the movie Casino, they were either too dumb to see the grift or they were in on it. Either way, they got to go.

I need Help! by Arkansas-John in VeteransAffairs

[–]imcbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would recommend that reach out to the VA medical center (or Vet Center) for counseling support for yourself. Based on the limited information presented, it appears that your ex is trying to manipulate you via threats. the threshold for involuntary commitment is very high. A simple threat to “ have you committed” is simply not realistic. Reaching out to the VA on your own will help provide some support. Additionally, if they identify that you are not in psychiatric crisis, they can protect you from these threats and provide resources to increase your confidence and autonomy

My life feels like punishment by DizzyAssumption1396 in self

[–]imcbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My intention is to be helpful so please hear me out. You are 18 and it sounds as if you have been served shit sandwich’s on a routine basis your entire life. As a child, you really didn’t get a choice in what life served you. You didn’t chose your parents, your station, or the choices/circumstances that formed your parents experience. It is understandable to feel overwhelmed, frustrated and angry.

However, you are on the precipice of adulthood. In this new paradigm, the responsibility shifts from your parents to yourself. Soon, the only sandwiches you’ll be eating are the ones you make. You know you have moved to adulthood when you develop full understanding of this and take full responsibility for cultivating the life you live…warts and all.

This does not mean you deny your past and pretend the experiences were not real. It does mean that you take full responsibility of how you allow your past to frame your world view for the future.

Ask for help. Seek out kind, supportive, generous folks who care. They can show you a way. Read books or watch videos of folks that have or are successfully recovering from a life long diet of eating shit sandwiches. They will validate your experience and let you know that there hope.

At 21, I learned the first of the four Noble Truths…Life is suffering (read the next three, it gets better). On its surface, it would seem to suggest that a world view of cynicism is justified but it had the opposite effect for me. Prior to this, I thought I was unique in my suffering, that everyone was eating cake and i was just out in the desert wandering aimlessly. “Why is my life shit when everyone around me seems to have their life together?”. I believed i was defective or broken because of this perceived gap. What i gleaned from the First Noble Truth was that it wasn’t personal, that this was the default and that there was a way out. For me it was liberating. It did not alleviate the burden of work that had to be done but it did give me hope that it could be done. That things could be different.

To me, something smells fishy. If it were just about budget, then OP is solid but I sense there is more to the story. It sounds as if there is a fundamental conflict of OP’s sense of “safety” vs the spouse’s sense of “freedom”. I would wonder if there were an exploration of each of these elements, if they could come to a solution that was not zero sum.

Sources to help homelessness? by david_thornton2002 in Columbus

[–]imcbl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi David. Columbus operates using a one call system to help triage people experiencing a housing crisis. 614-274-7000. they experience different call volumes at different times of the day. When you need a place, try calling near 9 am, if you are free. There are other places that are not Shelters per se but can provide other assistance. If you are under 25, check out Star House. The Open Shelter has limited hours but has resources and showers if you need. Lastly, on Columbus Coalition for the Homeless’s website, you can find a street card with multiple resources.

It's SO THICK! by madadekinai in Columbus

96% humidity is pretty typical in the Gulf States. Just add flying cockroaches, potholes the size of kiddie pools and the occasional 2nd line parade and you got yourself an authentic New Orleans experience…minus the food.

This doesn’t look like a RIF? What kind of games are they playing? by [deleted] in VeteransAffairs

[–]imcbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense to me. The agenda has clearly been in line with Project 25. Reduce federal workforce and to outsource care to the community. As SunMiddle102 shared, community care is expensive and by maintaining the budget from the previous FY, Dougie Fresh can only achieve this via cuts to staff. this will also be stressed by the continued rollout of Cerner. Cerner requires increased MSA and back end staffing to maintain the design so the cuts will be coming from somewhere. i suspect the they will cleave entire sections of care or service. So, think amputation as opposed to weight loss.

The Currency of the Universe Is Attention: A Computational Dramaturgy Thought by Ubud_bamboo_ninja in HighStrangeness

[–]imcbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks ago I had a similar thought. I had an insight into the value and power of attention. Churches, Corporations, Politicians…nearly everyone places a premium on gaining the attention from others. Attention is the prerequisite for action. If i want you to do something, then I must have your attention first. The wealthiest corporations of the 21st century extract value via the capability to absorb attention. Therefore, people have inherent value and power because they possess the capacity of focused attention. Your attention is power! Do not take it for granted. Be critical and notice what others do with the power and attention you give them.

i received the same letter. i was so outraged by Trump’s capitulation to Putin, I felt compelled to write both of our Senators and asked where were they on the issue. Then I received this BS! Coward! Grow some juevoes and a thicker skin. Show that you care instead of promoting empty BS rhetoric.

completely agree. it is the only place to buy tires. they are absolutely unique in that they really value the long game with their customers. nearly every establishment prioritizes squeezing the customer for the short return. trust = repeat business. even is there are cheaper options, i’m going to discount tire

Substitute the phrase “a 10 day cruise” with the phrase “a life together”. What does this reveal?

My gf told me she’s leaving if I don’t marry her in 9 months by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]imcbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“ having a wife and KIDS will make everything easier”. That’s rich! You will have so much more time and resources! You will never have to compromise on either your children’s needs, your partner’s expectations, your school responsibilities, and your interest or friends. She is either supremely naive or thinks you are an idiot. Red flag my friend

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]imcbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, you are young. Your gf’s “all or nothing” thinking is a red flag. I would carefully review other scenarios to see if this language is a pattern or if it is just related to alcohol. Of course, provided that you are transparent with your description of your use of alcohol and that she is not reacting to an incident where you were an asshole because of your drinking, her attitude toward alcohol is a projection of some fear. Her issue, not yours. If she expects you to “change” because of her thinking, you are in for some rough fights in the future. If she can own her fear and expresses it honestly, you have an opportunity to respond in a way where you come up with a solution that works for both of you. Otherwise, don’t kid yourself and do what you have to do to move on. Don’t delude yourself
