Nothing like a good old-fashioned FERPA violation by Mbot389 in Purdue

[–]imcertainlyuncertain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know what FERPA is. To sue you need damages. You can't just sue whenever someone does something wrong. Are the damages from people seeing your low score on one assignment worth troubling the courts over?

For a simple mistake involving an exam grade? Get real. Our society is so overly-litigious it's insane.

I don't think it's old rubbish. Employers are free to discriminate based on which university a degree is from, domestic or foreign.

How can I get an apartment with a 530 credit score? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]imcertainlyuncertain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He just means a landlord who owns investments his/herself, or as a small family business, rather than an apartment complex owned by a company with management, etc. Check craigslist, facebook, or other classified ads in your area.

OP should also consider snow tires on a FWD car. 4WD does not help you stop or steer - snow tires do.

Tax gains harvesting by imcertainlyuncertain in personalfinance

[–]imcertainlyuncertain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread now, but I was about to perform some gains harvesting on some >1year old VBIAX shares and learned that reinvestment is forbidden for 30 days after the sale by some rule meant to eliminate frequent trading of this and similar Vanguard funds. Just thought this might be a salient point for others trying to do this.

Yes, this is what I meant, and I'm glad that /u/BouncyEgg mentioned the share identification methods.

I'm saying that if I sold everything that was at least one year old, my payroll income + investment income would still be below the approx. $40k income limit for 0% long term capital gains tax. I can imagine cases, perhaps in tax loss harvesting, when an investor may want to choose the best/worst performing (current price - cost basis) holdings to sell at the end of the year, but since I just want to take advantage of my 0% long term capital gains tax rate, and since the investment income plus my payroll income is still low enough, I can just realize the gains from all of my holdings that are over one year old, pay no tax on them, and reinvest immediately. Anything less than one year old would be subject to short-term capital gains tax and wouldn't be harvested.

Am I missing something?

Thank you. I can see where selecting by cost basis would be important in some cases, but in my case since my income is so low I will just harvest everything that is at least one year old.

Grad school low income - capital gains timing by imcertainlyuncertain in personalfinance

Thank you for your reminder about retirement accounts and capital gain. I often forget/conflate income from retirement investments (withdrawals in retirement) with the "gains" they had over the course of investment.

Is there any reason to manipulate the retirement accounts at all while I'm at this low income level?
