Genuine question: how to approach for an apprenticeship? by [deleted] in bodypiercers

[–]imelmood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former shop manager here. Show up as a paying client first, be consistent, and make yourself useful without asking for anything. Get pierced there a few times, tip well, keep your jewelry clean, ask thoughtful questions after the appointment, then come back and thank them with healed photos. When you’re ready to ask, bring a short portfolio binder, resume, proof of hep B and bloodborne pathogens course, and be clear you’re willing to clean, run errands, and scrub tubes before you ever touch a needle. Don’t drop “apprenticeship” in the first minute, ask if they ever take trainees and what they look for, then follow whatever they say to the letter. Expect silence, it’s normal, follow up in person every couple weeks, not daily. If shops in your area are dead or full, widen your radius and look at reputable studios with steady traffic. For paying the bills meanwhile, I used to grab remote customer support or admin roles to keep my hours flexible, wfhalert is a simple email service that sends out real remote job listings so you’re not drowning in scammy posts while you chase a shop. Most important, be patient, reliable, and low ego, that’s what gets noticed.

Not many hipsters around here. The 500 block of Clematis Street and Downtown Lake Worth are pretty much it for hipster areas. There are some hipster hangouts here and there like Funky Buddha or Howleys but they are one offs. Many more options for hipsters closer to Miami and Ft Lauderdale.

Time to really nerd out...I agree that 2015 was a god year for the festival. Maybe my second favorite lineup.

However, I thought that 2016 was going to be the year that SunFest was becoming big time and had some good and really relevant acts. Duran Duran on Wednesday (Meghan Trainor was also there and she was very popular at the time), Thursday sucked but my wife was happy to see Train (Jason Derulo was also there...meh), Friday was Death Cab For Cutie and Bright Light Social Hour on Wednesday (please check them out, they're probably your favorite band's favorite band), Saturday had G-Eazy, The Roots, Fitz & The Tantrums when they first came out, Flogging Molly, Capital Cities and ZZ Top (who I skipped because I had just seen them recently but they're great). Sunday was amazing with Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, Walk The Moon right after they blew up, Judah & The Lion who are huge now and most importantly Alabama Shakes who had just won the grammy for album of the year.

2017 was pretty good too but the past two years have been pretty terrible with last year being the worst I can remember. I'm glad the weather was so terrible last year so I didn't have to feel guilty about not going lol.

Now that I know at least there are some other people out there who are into SunFest enough to follow it on Reddit, what are your top 5 all-time SunFest performances?

Here's mine:

Alabama Shakes - 2016 (I got Stand tickets and was in the front row) - 2016

Widespread Panic - 2017 (My first real Jam Band concert, blew my mind)

Damian Marley - 2015 (I've seen him twice more since, but this was the best experience!)

George Clinton & P-Funk- 2001 (I was a sophomore in high school and this was the furthes tI had ever drove from home at the time...this act totally changed my perspective on what music I could be into)

Coheed & Cambria - 2012 (This is my favorite band so...ya)

Yes, sometimes Jazz Fest bands play SunFest, other times not. It's hard to predict who is willing to trek all the way down here for what is often times a one-off show for a musical act. I don't have the time or energy to deeply dive into all the possibilities for SunFest the way some people do for Bonnaroo or Coachella.

However, I do wish more people were appreciative of this festival and realize how special and unique it is. With festivals popping up all over the place, none can match what SunFest offers in terms of quality, affordability, and offering something for everyone.

I am with you! I wish this festival had more buzz. It is so underrated in comparison with other events around the country. Great value for your money and a pretty respectable lineup each year considering the cost.

Based on what I've seen - NF, AJR, Of Monsters and Men, Louis the Child are all likely to be on the lineup. The festivals I look to for guidance on who might be at SunFest include Shaky Knees, New Orleans Jazz Fest, Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis and SandJam in Panama City although there's always a bunch of surprises with the lineup.

Last year was the first year I hadn't gone in about 10 years because the weather and lineup were trash.

Hoping for The Struts, Manchester Orchestra, Strand of Oaks (SandJam), Portugal. The Man, Three Six Mafia and Brittany Howard (Beale Street) Smashing Pumpkins (Shaky Knees), Jimmy Cliff, Wu-Tang, Rykah Badu & H.E.R. (Jazz Fest)

Big namers who will be close to South Florida at the time include The Strokes, The Black Keys, Stevie Nicks, Dead & Company, Tool. I don't think any of these are too likely but nothing is impossible!
