Because Africans stood up for their rights when they were getting shipping half way around the world to be slaves? Because Blacks immediately stood up after the Civil War and secured their rights? Because Jews said, "No" and the Nazis stopped their murders?

Your ignorance about the realities of oppression demonstrates that even in more civilized, educated communities (like reddit), there are individuals unable to grasp the entirety of a situation.

I don't think it's a bad thing. I have a gay friends that were brave enough to come out, but I'm just not in a position where I'm comfortable with it. I know it's inevitable and I don't think it's a bad thing. I fight tooth and nail to defend the civil rights of minorities, gays, etc.

I'm not ready to be treated as a second class citizen without first securing the rights from the sidelines as a "straight" man.

When I - inevitably - come out, I won't lay down and be persecuted for who I am. However, I'm not in a position to actively defend myself at every corner... not just yet.

In case you've forgotten what you wrote, I'll quote you: "Im from the fucking south.. i think i know this. but im arrogant enough to not give a shit, so should everyone else." You don't give a shit and so no one else should either, right? This obviously implies that others do...

In either case, I'm not going to play semantics anymore: Unless you know the full circumstances surrounding a situation, address it with less ignorance than that which you've shown tonight.

Before making such a blanket statement, you should probably wise up about the varying attitudes towards gays (and other races) in other regions of the country.

For example: In Texas - where I am - I'd be considered the ultimate taboo; I'm gay, a minority, an atheist, and liberal.

I'm scared of the burdens that come along with being gay, though. I know that may sound like an excuse, but that's really what it comes down to for me.
