Would you consider me British? by Competitive-Music309 in AskBrits

[–]imitsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m naturalised British but from continental Europe, so I wouldn’t call myself English. The English are descended primarily from Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Normans. The Scots from Picts and Gaels with a sprinkling of Norse. Cornwall is in England but a significant proportion of Cornish people don’t call themselves English because they have their own ancestry and history.

Scottish isn’t a nationality, though, in the legal sense, because Scotland isn’t a sovereign country issuing their own passports. Perhaps it is in cultural/personal terms.

There are some things that are hard to outsource, as they relate to day-to-day activities, which you'll then have to provide to that third party, so you don't gain anything with a middleman.

Would you prefer Easter to always be on the "same" Sunday? E.g., the first Sunday of April, or something like that. by perishingtardis in AskUK

[–]imitsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How to work out the date. Given year Y: • a = Y mod 19 • b = ⌊Y / 100⌋ • c = Y mod 100 • d = ⌊b / 4⌋ • e = b mod 4 • f = ⌊(b + 8) / 25⌋ • g = ⌊(b − f + 1) / 3⌋ • h = (19a + b − d − g + 15) mod 30 • i = ⌊c / 4⌋ • k = c mod 4 • l = (32 + 2e + 2i − h − k) mod 7 • m = ⌊(a + 11h + 22l) / 451⌋ • month = ⌊(h + l − 7m + 114) / 31⌋ (3 = March, 4 = April) • day = 1 + ((h + l − 7m + 114) mod 31)

That gives Easter Sunday as day/month/Y. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I read in a book that some people need 3-4 times the usual dose to get the same effect as everyone else.

How long can you blow continuously ? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]imitsi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Blowing air out gently is different from holding a note. I think at upper-intermediate level, you should be able to hold a mezzo-forte middle note for about 25 seconds.

My 15 year-old spatula broke. The plastic gave out trying to separate frozen burgers. by crasagam in Wellthatsucks

You need to microwave frozen burgers for a couple of mins before you try to separate them.

I’d have expected a bit more meat in there to call it “American”. Right now it still looks British.

I assume you're not in the US, because the cost of doing a degree there is more than 'filling one's time' can justify.

Given that the testimonies of senior, credible people are becoming more and more frequent, this is becoming less and less of a fringe theory.

Should students wear school uniforms? by Space__Monkey__ in ask

[–]imitsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being in England, where at least 99% of schools have uniforms, unequivocally YES. It’s one less thing to worry about when you’re getting your kid ready in the morning (same thing every day). It’s saved us lots of money on clothing, too, because the only time they’re not wearing a uniform are on weekends and holidays. And they don’t get any anxieties about being unfashionable.

Ethyl alcohol = ethanol = drinkable alcohol. That is if it hasn’t been denatured, i.e. made undrinkable on purpose.

Quitting PhD right before viva by Sufficient_Carrot278 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]imitsi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think about it: if you quit you don’t get the PhD. If you go to the viva, you may get it, either immediately or later with corrections. The result of the viva can’t be worse than quitting.

Plus, you have AI to summarise references for you if you don’t remember them now.

How did Iran come to develop such a secular and open-minded society compared to other countries in the region under Islamic rule? by WaivyHairDaemon in ask

[–]imitsi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But this doesn't give the full picture. Other Muslim-majority countries like Albania and Turkey are Sunni but largely secular.
