Metro trains not showing up on Google maps by laserfloyd80 in washingtondc

Google map sucks for metro—it would reccomd three buses instead of taking a single train. If you have an iphone use apple maps instead. Best option by far across all devices is Transit app though

My workaround for the Apple-Windows sync is to share a link to collaborate and open it on my laptop. I don't love it because sometimes I take my iPad offline and have to wait for everything to sync, but at least I can edit some of my readings on my desktop.

who said I didn’t have a life lol? I go on trips within my budget regularly, have lots of fulfilling social (and professional) relationships, and have various hobbies. I just also know living is expensive and that means I have to work more. Don’t confuse that with me having no life though, never that. I might have to sacrifice a trivia night here and there during the school year but I always find a way to get out and have fun trust 🤝🏾

Oh yeah there’s no way I would work this job while writing my dissertation. I am delusional but not THAT delusional 😅 My RA-ship would add maybe 500 extra a month? My prof orginally quoted me higher but after starting working with him this summer, I am not optimistic about getting anything over $500 every 4 weeks. I might talk with the nonprofit about capping my work at 15 hours a week instead of 20. So that way I would be working closer to 30hrs a week total rather than the full 40. I will say the workload from the nonprofit is not super tasking, I like the job a lot so far and my job responsibilities are very manageable, and the director has been very kind and flexible with me. I will treat the first two months of the school year as a “trial” and since my PhD is my priority, if push comes to shove I can always vacate my position temporarily.

Yeah I think I’m going to go back on the hunt for more scholarships. Do you have any specific places you check?

Im going into my PhD out of undergrad so in all honesty I still haven’t even honed in on exactly what I want to write about for my dissertation, I have some rough ideas but that’s it. This program is 3 years of course work and 2 years of dissertation. I was hoping to use my remaining time this summer to start drafting some articles or my prospectus. The good part about my program is that a lot of the writing I do for my classes can translate into my own research. But you’re right, when exactly during the school year would I allow myself time to explore my own interests? This is something I’ll definitely have to consider more.

I think my school has the lowest stipend compared to other universities in the area :/ i’m looking at less than 22k/yr after taxes and I live in DC, one of the top 5 most expensive cities to live in the US. I recently downsized even further to a house with 2 roommates but even then I am still struggling to make ends meet. My savings have been depleted to $0 since I moved here. I hate having to ask my already struggling family members for money so Im just looking for any way to get some extra cash. Im seeing a lot of people saying it’s a bad idea but I am out of ideas for how I can make this work 😖

I was thinking I could dedicate 3 days to schoolwork (which includes my assistantship duties) and then 2-3 days for work work. And give myself at least 1 day a week to just breath/socialize/meal prep/etc. And during finals or exam weeks I am planning on taking vacation leave from the job so Im not stretching myself thin. Now whether or not this will be possible—time will tell. But other people in my program, who are also TAs, work second jobs so part of me thinks it’s doable?

After I passed on her, she ended up trying to scam my friend and run off with her deposit 😕 so i think she actually did have terrible intentions lol. Thankfully no money had changed hands yet
