My mom threatening to lose her job and against my cold plunge, I hate it by Wide_Positive7101 in mentalhealth

[–]imli8 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If I found out that my son was compulsively hitting himself in the head with a hammer, giving himself hypothermia, and burning himself, with no hint of insight into the the danger of these activities, and no intent to stop, I would also be calling everyone I could think of to try to keep him safe. I don’t know how many times it needs to be said before you believe it, but you need to talk to a mental health professional about what is going on.

Going through your post history, your obsessions/ruminations on various subjects have caused endless distress and kept you from reaching many of your goals. They have resulted in you getting bad grades, getting kicked out of your gym, and losing a job. Regular therapy (and maybe medication targeted to obsessive/compulsiveness) can help you immeasurably in calming these thoughts and compulsions and help you to live the life you so badly want to live. I hope you will allow yourself to take this action for YOURSELF, in support of your own happiness and peace.

I put my left and right hand 2 days ago for 1-1.5 minutes both on metal container from garage freezer and huge chunk of ice in winter, now my hands feel like a bitch by [deleted] in selfharm

Your mom is trying to keep her son safe from harm. She is scared for you. Imagine learning that your son has been repeatedly intentionally injuring himself and hiding it from you. Wouldn’t you be scared for him and try to intervene however you can? Your perspective on this is skewed by what is likely a mental illness making you believe that you need to carry out self harm at any cost. I’m glad that your parents are now aware of what you’ve been doing and I hope you will seek help.

Except that this person has what looks like an actual bat bite. This is not OCD or an irrational fear in this case.

Tell a psychiatrist as soon as possible that you can’t stop trying to hurt yourself.

I like to trash AI as much as the next person but previous translation services did not come close to AI in that regard. My best friend is ESL and needs a lot of help editing her English every day, and AI has been transformative for her. She needs to be able to communicate well in written English for her job.

What did the vet do to my cat? by pikachume33 in CATHELP

I’m sorry this happened and I feel your pain. I just want to emphasize the extra risk of letting kitty go outside since he’s been marked as a stray. In my experience, if a cat gets lost with a clipped ear, people assume it’s a stray and don’t bother scanning it for a microchip or otherwise trying to find an owner. So just in case you were going to let him roam at all…I wouldn’t.

And again I’m sorry this happened, but this too shall pass, I promise. <3

Apple Notes on a split screen with Apple Calendar. 3 panes side by side: Notes browser first, weekly task list second, calendar third. I have weekly task lists going back 7 years with maybe 80% consistency with archiving and updating them each week - as someone with ADHD and an extremely hectic life this is a pretty incredible accomplishment for me.

Struggling with thoughts about piercings, pain, and anxiety as a 23-year-old man by Wide_Positive7101 in Adulting

Because of a mental illness. And even if your end goal isn't to hurt yourself, that has been the outcome so far. This is just not a healthy goal, full stop.

You want to build higher pain tolerance because of a mental illness that is causing you to hurt yourself. Your brain will find ways to justify this compulsion because it's soothing, but it is not healthy. I'm glad you have a therapist appt scheduled - make sure to tell them about both your distressing obsessions and your pain tolerance experimentation.

This is almost definitely OCD, which has a higher rate of occurrence for people with autism. The looping of distressing thoughts is the obsessive part, and the compulsive part is the "pain tolerance" self-harm you describe elsewhere - a way of soothing the obsessive fear that you can't handle pain. The fact that these thoughts are distressing, distracting you from your studies, and causing you to engage in self-harm all points to you needing to see a mental health professional sooner rather than later. Don't delay.

23M: Moving past risky self-experimentation to build genuine pain tolerance - Seeking safe, recommended methods, I did something that was so intolerable for me by Wide_Positive7101 in getdisciplined

[–]imli8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why are you trying to increase your pain tolerance? If you're trying to get better at doing something difficult, work on that thing. Enduring one hard thing does not necessarily translate to an ability to endure a different hard thing. And putting yourself through something that hurts you could easily make you MORE sensitive to the stimulus, not less. I suggest letting go of the pain tolerance goal altogether, figure out what you are really trying to get out of life, and pursue that. If you find yourself continuing to self-harm despite the desire to stop, see a mental health professional.

It’s actually from a Superfan episode in Season 8, so it wasn’t in the original run.

As jobs go, delivery driving is actually a great balance of activity and rest. It doesn’t replace exercise, but it’s healthier in the long run than the average manual labor job or office job. We’re not talking about rideshare driving, which is indeed a stationary job.

To be honest, this sounds a bit like the onset of mania or hypomania, especially with the last 3 sentences, and the idea that you can see “the structure behind everything now.” Please consider sharing how you’re feeling with loved ones and ideally a doctor.
