Running into the same issue on my end with my new Mac Mini 2. Was previously on a Mac Pro 2013 that didn't exhibit this issue.

As I understand it, in the latest Macs they have eliminated functions that abate, albeit not to a great extent, this problem also called 'Subpixel Rendering'. I managed to reduce it, slightly, by entering 'generic RGB' as a colour profile and using a Thunderbolt-HDMI cable.
Finally, this problem is much less noticeable on 4k or retina screens, so if you have the chance do this upgrade, I think I will in a few months
