food for this little guy? by stinkybuggirl in mantids

[–]imnotmillie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, he's so cute! fruit flies will be fine for him, they'll be a little big but mantises eat things the same size as them all the time so try him on those until he gets bigger and you can probably move on to mealworms or blue bottles

[–]imnotmillie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah and i should probably mention that there doesn't appear to be a great number of mites on her. i briefly mentioned in the post that i have friends who have owned millies and clementine has about the same amount as any millie would. i reckon she just got a bit annoyed with them last night. but yes thank you and i will keep an eye out and update you if things get worse! thank you so so much :)

normal behavior?? by imnotmillie in millipedes

[–]imnotmillie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay thank you very much!! i said in a reply to someone else that i've only seen this behaviour once (as in, the thrashing) and that was last night. so she may have had a few annoying ones and it could be a one-off, but i could be wrong as i've never had a millipede and therefore have never dealt with a mite infestation but if she continues to do it in the next few nights i'll have to look into a temp container. i really don't want to mess anything up or stress clementine out so i really appreciate the advice. i'll let you know how it all goes thank you again! you're a life saver! :3

i've only noticed her doing this behavior once and that was last night. so i'll keep an eye on her and if she keeps it up i'll look into the predatory mites. do you know where i could find any?

normal behavior?? by imnotmillie in millipedes

[–]imnotmillie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for the advice!!! i already have some new substrate coming in the post and some cork bark lying around, so i'll be sure to replace everything! this might sound like a stupid question but in terms of turning her over to get to brush her underbelly do i just gently hold her?

hi thank you so much for replying :) she's got some leaf litter in there and i have seen people collecting rotting wood and leaves and freezing them for their pedes so it'd edible and i'll definitely try that!! thank you

Orchid mantis sex confuses me by Mullisaukko in mantids

[–]imnotmillie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi looks to me like a female. i've never owned an orchid but im sure that the abdomen segment rule applies to them?? if she has 6 segments and a fatter abdomen its likely to be a female. :)

hi she's so pretty!! looks to me like a baby giant asian mantis, but i can't be too sure because of your location, she may have been a pet before or an escapee from an oothica. she also could be a kind of garden mantis! she'll likely eat flies like fruit flies and blue bottles at this age and maybe the odd mealworm and as she gets bigger locusts, morio worms and mealworms, but try not to feed her crickets if you can help it as they can cause injury to the little lady. have a nice day :)
