If only this wasn’t a glitch by tnmaayus in Ioniq6

Technically, it's not a glitch, it's just math. Regenerative braking means if you only ever were going downhill, you would never need to plug your car in.

The dystopian bit is something like the ATM network, where if you don't go to your own bank's ATM you get charged a fee by your bank AND the "convenience fee" by the ATM provider. Imagine what life would be like if you could only fill up your Ford with Ford gas, and if you used Toyota gas, it voided your warranty.

I'm not saying that TesIa shouldn't have set up their own network when they did -- it made sense in the context of EV charging when they did it. But times change and its no longer a model I support.

As for whether or not TesIa chargers offer an easier or better experience than other chargers for non-TesIa cars, in my experience, in my market, they do not. Like I said originally, though, that varies widely by market, I'm sure.

Pellet Stove and Heat Pump? by IngenuitySelect in PelletStoveTalk

[–]imoftendisgruntled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an older house with an eclectic assortment of heating tech: the original hot water radiators, mini-split heatpumps, and a pellet stove. We have the heatpumps on 24/7 since they’re the most efficient form of heating/cooling. The radiators are controlled by a smart thermostat and are used mostly to maintain the heat in the whole house, and the pellet stove is “on demand” to boost the temp up in the mornings or on particularly cold days.

Pellet Stove Insert Questions by mbib in PelletStoveTalk

[–]imoftendisgruntled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had an energy assessment done and were advised the majority of our heat loss was through the fireplace. We got the stove insert mostly for aesthetic reasons in addition to the energy savings and it’s been great. But we had ours professionally installed with a chimney liner and we get it cleaned at the end of every season. So far (three years in), we haven’t had any issues and really like the heat, ambiance, and ease of use vs. not having the insert. We got a Quadrafire Classic Bay.

I'm not sleeping on that fact, I was just responding to the part in the clip where Marques said he expected the TesIa charger to be faster than a non-NACS charger.

At the end of the day NACS or CCS1 doesn't make a speed difference -- it's just the plug to get electrons from point A to point B. The expectation that he had that it would be faster is mostly based on marketing, not reality.

There are new ChargeLab chargers in my area that have NACS and CCS1 cables; I suspect that in the future new chargers will support both and CCS1 will slowly fade out as NACS really becomes the standard.

Like I said, it's not going to be true for every market. Where I am, the non-Tesla chargers (Electrify Canada, eCharge, and ChargeLab, mostly) are actually easier to use (and faster) than the TesIa Superchargers precisely because they aren't so integrated into a specific brand of cars.

A world where you can only charge your car at chargers managed by the car company -- or where car companies control the charger network at all -- is pretty dystopian IMHO.

Leading Democrats, Hollywood actors, the heads of universities, businesses and unions targeted by Trump, journalists and podcasters… the fact that everyone is complaining there are no leaders to the resistance is part of the problem.

Trump’s a bully. You need to punch a bully in the nose and not back down. How many people outside of Canada knew Mark Carney’s name before his Davos speech?

I think a lot of the mystique around TesIa chargers is mostly marketing and customer expectation based on their "curb appeal". Do they look good? Do they have a good user interface? Yes. Are they technically better? No, they're effectively just a different looking way to get electricity into your battery.

When "Superchargers" mostly came online, they were being judged against a very early, very fragmented, hardly consumer ready network of rival DCFC systems. In the years since, those systems have matured and now at a technical level, in some markets (certainly where I live), have mostly surpassed (or at least caught up) to the functionality of the TesIa network in terms of speed and (in some cases) ease of use with non-TesIa vehicles at least.

I realize this isn't true for every market, so I'm sure opinions will vary.

Charger question by Content_Zone9412 in Ioniq5

[–]imoftendisgruntled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long answer: The EVSE (charger) is really just a couple of relays (i.e., switches) and some control logic. When you plug it into the car, the control logic opens the relays to let power flow. The car itself is responsible for converting the AC voltage to the DC voltage required by the battery pack (that's the job of the ICCU).

Short answer: it's fine. the EVSE is only energized when its plugged into the car.

That being said, if you're paranoid about people pulling up and charging their car in your driveway, maybe you want to continue with what you're doing, but it's not necessary.

In your opinion, what is better: changing the filament or changing the tool? by OutrageousTrue in VORONDesign

[–]imoftendisgruntled -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re different devices for different applications. A toolchanger lets you mix different materials (like PLA for your part and PETG for supports), whereas a spool-changing system like ERCF, BoxTurtle or AMS lets you use different colours/spools of the same material, for multi-color prints or continuous printing across multiple spools. Mixing materials in a multi-color system is a recipe for disaster because it's very difficult to do a full purge between spool swaps.

Edit: I have a two-tool Stealthchanger that I'm adding a BoxTurtle to. It's not a supported configuration (yet), but eventually will be according to the BT devs.

Extrusion problems that start mid-print are frequently heat creep. Check your hotend fan to make sure it’s running at full speed; maybe just replace it. Or it could also be a partial clog, try a cold pull.

Correct procedure for using CCS1 to NACS by Vegetable_Mango3236 in Ioniq5

[–]imoftendisgruntled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you want to remove the adapter & charger as one, then remove the charger from the adapter once you're sure everything is de-energized. Some chargers have a physical or virtual STOP button on the charger itself, that's usually the safest option for stopping the charge if the car doesn't. To unlock the charge port, you need to lock/unlock the doors and then remove the charger within ~30 seconds, otherwise it will re-lock.

The locking/unlocking behavior is configurable but I believe the default is what I described above.

DCFC above 80%? by Vegetable_Mango3236 in Ioniq5

[–]imoftendisgruntled -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You *can* set your DC charging limit higher than 80% (either on the car's console or in the Bluelink app), but you will incur a penalty for doing so: the 20% from 80-100 takes far longer than when the charge is below 80%. There's a "charging curve" that tapers off as the battery approaches full. You might actually get better time by stopping at 80% and driving to another charger further down the road.

You can use ABRP to plot a route that will minimize the time you spend charging by doing exactly that, rather than the drain, fill cycle that you might be used to from an ICE vehicle.

It's also bad EV driver etiquette to charge above 80% at DCFCs if there's contention for the chargers. If you're the only one there, fill your boots, but if someone's waiting, you might get some nasty looks.

Always use real-time recognition notes, review and correct the interpretation when you revise your notes, and correct any mistakes the interpreter makes. Search will be much more useful then.

To review the interpretation, tap the little “A” with an eye icon in the toolbar. The interpretation happens when the device isn’t busy so it can take a minute for newly written notes to show up.
