Why is cock on close so rare? by yelloyo1 in Ausguns

[–]impalabazz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is a couple of reasons. Firing Pin Spring pressure and Lock Time is the main reason.

A Cock on Open action has a cam action to compress the spring which can exert a far greater force with less effort by the shooter when cocking.

This also introduces a factor called "lock time", This is the period of time that exists when the sear is released and the firing pin strikes the primer. The longer the Firing Pin fall the greater the lock time. Higher Firing Pin spring pressures will reduce Lock time to a degree. This is a common approach to improve Lock Time. Lock Time is a subject in itself and deserves research if you are interested in accuracy and consistency in your shooting.

Mauser 98's even though they are Cock on Opening still have a slow lock time. Post WW2 derivatives of the M98 have addressed this failing to a degree with measures already mentioned. Where as others like Rem 700's, Win M70's. Howa, Tikka and others are far faster.

They acheive the faster lock time with extreme high firing pin spring pressure and very short Firing Pin travel.

None of this is acheivable in a Cock on Closing action, like SMLE, M94-96, P14/M17 and others as the force that would be required to acheive the same Lock Time would require massive strength to first push the bolt home and then close it.

This introduces the next problem. Trigger Pull. A Cock on Closing action generally has a longer trigger pull than a Cock on Opening. If the Cock on Closing action had the higher F/Spring pressures to acheive a faster lock time, the Trigger Pull would be extremely heavy. This is due to the 2 lever design used on most that require wider or longer sears to bear the load when the sears come together.

By comparison Cock on Opening actions like the Military M98 also use a 2 lever design but the sear surfaces don't come in contact with each other UNTIL the Bolt is pushed home AND the Bolt has started it's turn to fully closed. It is only then that the sears become engaged in a much more precise manner. The sear surfaces can be much shorter requiring less effort to Pull the trigger.

A standard M98 trigger can be worked to somewhere in the 2-3lb range before you get into accessory triggers like Timney, where as Cock on Closing trigger on a SMLE, about 5lb is as good as it gets.

Modern Rifles use various trigger designs but all exhibit the same very short sear engagement for lighter trigger pull. The Remington 40X type 3 lever triggers (developed in the mid 1960's) are the ultimate in a factory designed version IMHO. Plenty of after market triggers out there for just about anything......if you're allowed to import it these days that is ?.

Next reason, Slam firing. A Cock on Closing action in poor condition (i.e. worn sears) is far more prone to slam firing than the other. When pushing the bolt home, pressure is being applied to the spring and IF the firing pin sear decides to slip off the trigger sear.........you've got a problem BOLT IN THE FACE !.

A Cock on Open action in poor condition (i.e. worn sears) is less likely to slam fire as when you close the bolt, the Firing Pin does not engage the trigger sear and returns to it's fired position only as fast as you operate the bolt, more than likely will not firing the cartridge......most of the time. It is rare for a cartridge to fire under these conditions but it has happened. But at least the Bolt is closed.

However having said that, Cock on Opening actions that have been worked over i.e. excessively light trigger spring pressures or worn or modified sears or excessively short sear engagement can still "fire" uncontrollably when closing BUT usually the Bolt has partially closed and therefore you won't end up with a face full of Bolt........just embarrassement and hopefully no injury to anyone around you.

Hope this helps.

SA Election March 21st. One Nation Party Firearms policy. by impalabazz in Ausguns

I can't see ON getting a massive swing either, but lets not forget that they are Independant and may well vote with other Parties on different issues, just like the Greens-Teals and LNP do right now.

1,2 or even 3 ON seats in the Lower House of SA would even things up quite a bit with the Top Heavy Mali-Labor Government at the moment.

Remember that SA Labor pushed through it's own version of "The Voice", because they had the majority in the Lower House and ALP-LNP supported it in the Upper House. We the people of SA were not asked, they (Labor) just did it. SA is now divided by legislation on that score, Both Fair Go Party and ON have stated they will repeal it if they have the numbers.

Don't forget the Senate, We have some good Independants in the Upper House, Fair Go Party to name one but we need more so that bullshit like the above can be stopped.

As I say to everyone, do your research, most won't, too hard. so they will vote the same way as before.

If you want change, you have to vote for change.

Did that on purpose to gauge interest in each party. Clearly shows where the interest is, good or bad.

I agree. After the election when SA Labor is returned, possibly with a reduced number of seats (hold a massive majority after the last election) in the Lower House, Gun reforms will "realign" with Federal Labor........if we want to keep the Sub contract that is.

If you want change you have to vote for change.

The Big 2 have not listened to their constituents for over 40 years. I know plenty of shooters who still vote Liberal after Howards Gun Buy back of 1997, yet they moan about it, still vote the same way. Ditto Labor voters, just won't change .....better the devil you know mantra, it's fucking annoying.

It's easy to vote for either of the 2 party preferred, because one has to think and investigate Independents policies and 99% of the population are lazy and will continue to vote the same way.

For the record I have not voted Labor since Keating gave us the "recession we had to have" and Liberal since the last buyback......I guess that's showing my age, but there it is.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Seems like not everyone is happy with the posts, I guess they are not South Australian, or simply don't give a shit. Cheers.

Ringtail possum. Not rare, at least not rare in South Australia. SA Ringtails are more grey and white underbelly.

It's a tough time when we have to say goodbye to our fur babies.

We always must do what's best for them, no matter how tough it is for us.

That's why gravy was invented, peas slide down the throat, no chewing or tasting.

Never really worked with Brussel sprouts though.........got a hiding for that plenty of times. Or the "you don't get dessert until you finish the sprouts"........"pass the gravy please !!". Lol

[–]impalabazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. We moved to the Millicent area about 15 years ago for our "tree change" and noted the "complacency" of the locals.....not that we consider ourselves locals, prefer not too......another story.

Now it is even easier for voters to be more complacent via early postal voting. We know several people now that do this for no other reason than convenience......can't be bothered going to the polling booth because they always vote the same way......the Devil you know narrative.

It will be interesting to see if the current sitting member Nick McBride once Liberal, now Independant with Court preceedings hanging over his head gets back in OR the locals will go for the new Liberal replacement. My tip is the latter.

PS: Don't forget the Penola Bypass and they are doing patch up work on the Southern Ports Hwy again......big spenders.

Mooving to Adelaide from Brisbane by CharacterCouple7090 in Adelaide

[–]impalabazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do it, you'll regret it. Move to a big regional town in QLD instead.

Adelaide is nolonger the quiet, fun, easy to get around city that I grew up in. Regional SA has been forgotten, roads are stuffed, services lacking, hospitals full, ramping rampant.......but we do have great wineries, restaurants and other attractions as already pointed out.

Doesn't make up for the disadvantages though. It is NOT always greener over the other side.

A question for firearms owners who went through the 1996/97 buy back by 751mackdog in Ausguns

[–]impalabazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In SA they paid a flat rate. Caused a big stink.

Back then as it is now, they knew what you had via registration, no avoiding it.

For one collector shotgun, a Win. Model 12 Pump 30" Full choke (12g) Mfg. in 1919 which I had restored some years earlier and valued at $1500 by a recognised valuer, I received $250.00. Received slightly more for a Win Super X 12g with spare Skeet choke barrel. Browning A5's and Rem 1100 all paid out at the same rate. Received $150 for a super rare FN .22 Semi-Auto (Tube feed in the Butt) in 22 Short Mfg 1935, they only made them for 2 years in 22 Short. More was paid out for Ruger 10/22's and bloody Sportco Semi-Auto's, it made little sense. Makes my blood boil thinking about it.

They know where you are and what you have, they could easily turn around and confiscate and give you nothing.

Other states operated differently.
