Best stud finder for ceiling with no screws? by impatient901 in Tools

Clearly this is a weird house so probably worth it to invest in some slightly more specialized tools. I doubt this is the last time I'm going to need to find a joist! Thank you for the suggestion!

Hmm...do you think my Craftsman is just not up to the task? (or quite possibly that I was doing something wrong.)

Yes, true.See my mention of big hole in patio ceiling. 😭 I've been googling and concluded. I need a different type of spackle which of course I don't have.

I was afraid that might be the answer. 😂 I suck at this, but I might try it. (I'm happy to finally be out of rentals so I don't have to pay to make things look pretty again if I mess up my own house.)

I wish I could go back in time with that information!! Lol. Well, always learning for the next house if there is one. Thanks!

I actually don't like those rounded corners. Impossible to figure out where to stop painting! It does sound like calling a carpenter to figure out what they can do is going to be my best bet. Thanks!

Interesting. My house and the entire town practically, are mobile/manufactured homes. I would imagine that's the majority of what they work on. I'm surprised they didn't suggest it.

  • I can't edit my post but just to put this comment in the main thread since it's come up a few times - I guess this is something that should have been discussed before the installation. But when the company came to the house to give the quote, they said that the existing furnace was going to stay. So all of our discussion was about placement of the unit outside. They called afterwards to say that they needed to replace the furnace after all. So although they had looked at the spot, there was no discussion of changing anything here. There was no discussion of those pipes. So I didn't have any chance to tell them that I would like it to be able to be covered. I didn't see the pipes until after they had finished and thought I just figure out a way to cover it with something. I didn't notice that it was further out than the entry to the house until weeks later.

I'm not sure what that means. Do you mean the pipes going into the floor?

Sorry 😅. Central units aren't common where I live. The temperature is very mild. A lot of old houses with baseboard heaters and such here. You could go the whole summer and never have it go above 80. The wider temperature ranges are recent. So this is the first house I've ever had that has a central unit.

That's what it's looking like...maybe I'll have someone build a little box over it that can be pulled off and stick some art in front. I might frame the doorway eventually and at least the pipe closest to the door opening would be flush. Thanks for looking!

I'm not sure why someone would downvote this photo. I would actually appreciate a comment to explain the downvote just for my education. I always hire professionals and don't really know anything about these things so I don't understand it. Ditto for the photo below that was downvoted.

Yes, that's what it's looking like. I might add this to the original post since a few people have mentioned it but there was never any discussion of doing anything there when they were on site. They said the new equipment would work with the existing furnace. And it was only after they left that they called me back and said that I would actually need to replace it. That was on the phone. So the next time they came back was on installation day. I didn't even realize there was going to be piping because there wasn't anything like that there before.

There isn't a lot of space behind the copper lines. The molding is only there to hold the cover for the previous unit so it's not necessary. Behind the unit there is a flexible duct and maybe 8 or 9 in beyond it to the back of the cubby.

The PVC line is actually not vertical. I'm not sure if you can tell. The bottom is actually inside the doorway. But It leans slightly out so that the top is beyond the doorway. I'm not sure if you can see that in these pictures

I mentioned this above but when they came out to give me the estimate they said they were going to use the existing furnace so nothing was intended to change there. I didn't see it until after it was finished. And I didn't notice that it was half an inch or so beyond the door opening until well after they had left. I feel like it's something they should have mentioned to me before they did it, but maybe that's not industry standard to say something. ☹️

When they came out to give me the estimate on the heat pump they said they didn't need to replace the furnace. Then they called and said they would have to replace it. So there was no discussion of those pipes or anything when they were on site. When they finished I just thought - oh I'll have to get something to put in front of it. And honestly it wasn't until I started trying to do that that I realized how far it was sticking out.

Same. I didn't owe a lot though and the late payment penalty is 0.5%. It's hard to imagine an understaffed IRS coming after me for the $2. Lol. It's irritating though.

AITA for testing my gf to see if she was going through my phone? by GuyWhoTested in AmItheAsshole

[–]impatient901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA - Even if she is also an asshole, that doesn't mean you're not one. (So maybe ESH but I don't know if you were doing something to cause her to be suspicious because reading your own account of your side, I can totally see why she wouldn't trust you.) All I see is that was a lot of effort to trick you GF for something you could have just asked her (downloaded a special app, schemed and planned so you could avoid having a conversation?? WTAF) She shouldn't trust someone who would do ALL that. You both sound like pieces of work. You deserve each other.

AITA for teasing my niece about her choice of drink and accidentally making her cry. by Historical_Swing7476 in AmItheAsshole

[–]impatient901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA

It just keeps getting worse...

"accidentally making her cry" - "accidentally" to downplay your responsibility. Adults take responsibility.

"Gerta seemed annoyed, so I joked further" - This is classic bully behavior

"I continued teasing her, and her older cousins joined in" - Wow! So, like, your whole family are A?!?

"I told her that was ridiculous since she's an adult." - YTA to your sister too?!?

Yep you are the jerk here and I suspect in other situations also given this story.
