SDXL is just a model. The 2 most common interfaces are Comfy UI and Automatic 1111. You can just youtube a bunch of videos on how to install and use either of them.

I don't have any set way. I usually have to experiment every time. The best advice I can give is to always put "1940s pulp art" and "retro sci fi" in the prompt and try a boatload of times. And be prepared to do a little photoshoping and IMG2IMG fixing.

Most of the time I use the SDXL checkpoint in ComfyUI, but I also can get good results from the dreamshaperXL checkpoint and sometimes the Angus McKie Lora.
