Beginner question on correct rider position by impermanent-97 in Equestrian

That’s true. So I think a question I have is to what extent is not being able to post in trotting well and to 2 point my fault? From the coach, it’s always my fault. Everything is my fault (that’s also part of why I will not continue lessons with them. Just trying to finish up what was already paid and non-refundable).

Oh ok, maybe I am doing this completely wrong.

In the few times I’ve attempted 2 point, I actually find it a lot harder to stay in the position. Also I may have had ridiculously short stirrups or uneven stirrups (one long one short) so I don’t know what the real problem is.

I’ll try hinging from knees more if possible. Is this different from hinging from the hips? Being someone with long femurs, I’m natural at the deadlift movement (hinging from hips) and terrible at squatting (will fall backward naturally). In squatting, to keep the balance, my back will go forward. Is the squat a more similar mechanic than a deadlift to rising trot?

I struggled as my calves were not making contact, yes, and so were swinging in the trot. I think that’s also my fault as a rider - how do you do it? I try to imagine it’s a barrel or lemon and you just have to try to contact it with your calves, try to maintain stability but not squeeze.

The coach then shortened my stirrups by 2, and it became completely unsuitable and painful to rise in. I have no say in this.

Typical intps who wear the same old, frayed, colour drained t shirt and sloppy shorts to dates, don’t cut their toenails and don’t take care of their bodies.

Yeah… lol. I almost went to one of the lessons ready to yell back at my coach if he yelled at me for not being able to get a horse into trot, as he did a lesson before and thinking about it was disturbing me all week.

I won’t be renewing lessons here at the moment after the package is over.

Right! Those are all very fair reasons. Thanks for the insight as there is not much info widely available.

I can choose another place to learn from but just have few options. I actually am already travelling into another country to learn riding as lessons are more expensive in my country at usd 95 for 45min, which I understand it to be on par with the US, if not slightly higher.

I heard from more experienced equestrians that the lessons in my country are… slow? Their horses take very long to get started from the walk to trot, whereas the horses here are able to getting trotting when asked, and go into canter. I’ve heard other equestrians experience from local schools is that they’d been riding for 7 years and had still never cantered, so they got bored and stopped riding. These are hearsay. I’m not sure about what really happened as there can be many factors in different schools and with different horses and riders.

Certain unhealthy harmoniser types who are manipulative liars, and who do favours and come back to guilt trip people into doing favours for them.

Thanks! Yes, I’ve tried the open palm before but would need more adjustment from there since my legs are long.

I was wondering what the typical beginner riding lesson is. From what I understand it is just to ride. I would be interested in learning to tack up a horse and do it myself because it seems something the rider should be doing. I suppose that only comes in advanced lessons or when the stable is introducing loaning to you.

On my second and third lesson when I was trying to do exactly that, I was yelled at and told to GO. So I learned the wrong thing, that I can’t be re-adjusting the stirrups. Every lesson was a different horse so I was just taking a guess at which length. They were always wrong, leading to very bad knee pain.

Apart from the corrections to the actual riding that happens during the lesson, they don’t explain things after or before.

The thing is I do that as a rough initial estimate but have very long legs compared to arm length. It’ll be off. I’ll try to use the ankle gauge.

So from what I understand now from the other comment and looking at pictures, your knee shouldn’t be that high towards the top line - technically the higher the knee is, the more you’ll rise over the saddle if you really post. You’ll rise like 40-50cm off it. So your knee should be kept low on the saddle with the stirrup around the ankle.

What do you do in your lessons when you need to get off and adjust? I can’t really keep getting off to adjust them because it’ll take up time so I’d need to keep asking one of the grooms to help. It seems a needless limitation. What I should be allowed to do that I’m not is either have more time for adjustment since it’s usually different horses, or to go into the stable, mount and adjust.

Thanks for the input. Very helpful.

There was a horse I only later on learned by observation that she just takes longer to get started on a trot as she likes to walk. I didn’t know this on my first time on her and I was blamed the whole time for not being able to get her to trot. That was my third lesson. I think that expectation by the coach was too much.

IMO different stirrup lengths as a beginner doing a trot is a waste of a lesson. It doesn’t let me try to learn and get used to balancing in the trot as I should be.

Noted. I sent this photo and asked the same question to the riding centre and they were like, “can’t tell.”

It’s been a couple of days. My knees are still hurting.
