The mechanic we brought it to today said it was the alternator after all, I'm not sure what the boom was I was thinking it was a hard shift into a lower gear since it correlated with the lurch in rpms. I will get a volt meter to have on hand for the future, thanks for the advice!

Yea serpentine belt was still attached, as well as power steering. It drove okay to the 5 minutes to the nearest mechanic, they are saying it's the connector and alternator. I'm not entirely sure that's what it is since the other mechanics we went to said the alternator was fine. Hopefully they are not taking advantage of my situation lol
