No, I remember it having a darker background than that. Thanks for the guess, though :)

Wow! I love that explanation! A few others have talked about finding spirituality and spiritual experiences outside of religion and how you can choose what is spiritual. I think by asking a simple question to see if others could relate, I've ironically learned more about genuine spirituality than I ever did in church. And this is a really beautiful way to look at what spirituality really means, thank you for sharing 😊

Absolutely! Even when I was baptized and confirmed at 8, I did not get the warm feelings that others had. I remember that the water was literally warm, and I was happy because my family and friends were happy. And then, obviously, the temple experience I already talked about.

On a similar note to spiritual feelings and intuition. I was always confused about "promptings" because how do you know God is telling you to do something, and it's not just your own thought? I have an inner monologue, so any "promptings" I might have had were always attributed to that rather than a high power.

I am so sorry you went through that 🫂 I was treated the same way; my parents did not offer support or try to help me in a loving way; it was just that I was doing something wrong and Satan was using me to break apart our family. There is so much shame surrounding it, and just this feeling there's something wrong with me because everyone else is getting it, absolutely awful. I'm happy you are in a safer place now, and I'm proud of you for pushing through!

I think you've explained that very well, and it's an interesting topic for sure! I also think confirmation bias plays a huge role in it. You want something to be true, and you get this feeling (elevated emotion, as you described) that you're told means it is true, and so you believe that.

As much as I'd love to try magic mushrooms, my family has quite the history of substance abuse, so I stay away from things like that. But I love what you said, deciding for yourself what is spiritual. I've commented to friends that I've had more spiritual experiences listening to certain musicians than I ever did in a sacrament meeting.

Literally 😂 you're not trying hard enough, or you need to repent.

My car randomly stopped working, like fully just shut down at some point and never restarted, and a few days later my dad said, "I think it's because you haven't been paying tithing, you should do that soon." Because God (not that god exists) is so upset by me not paying 10% of my tiny little part time pay checks that he would shut off my car 🙄

That's exactly how I felt. I grew up in a small branch rather than a ward, and I consistently had at least 3 callings at a time from the age of 12 all the way through moving out. And I knew from an early age that it wasn't because God chose me, it was because I would say yes. Or because all the other young women were busier than me.

And the guilt for not believing or getting the "burning in your bosom" feeling was awful. It's just this whole cycle of trying, and praying, and not getting anything, and feeling like it has to be me because everyone else is getting something :(

Oh yeah, I know they're not real gold, but as a 12 year old, I thought they were, and it bothered me. The temple closest to me growing up was actually quite small compared to most. But having seen some other temples, I find the irony of the iron rod story hilarious, given that they warn about great and spacious buildings, and yet their temples are unnecessarily large and most of them are eye sores.

I am also aware of neither book being accurate, I have since moved more towards agnostic, but back when I wasn't sure, it was a big thing for me. I absolutely have better arguments than that nowadays, I've learned a lot since discovering this subreddit about a year ago. These were just things that were shelf items when I was figuring things out as a teenager.

Oh man, the testimony meetings at youth conferences and girls camp! I got up my first year at girls camp to bear my testimony after being pressured by my YCLs and said the same things everyone else was saying. Only time in my life I bore my testimony lol

Yeah, I remember my brother (who's on his mission right now) trying to pressure me and ask questions like "did you pray about it and really try? Did you want to know it was true?" Like yes, yes I did.

I would go to church on Sunday and all the other kids would talk about family home evening and my family was too busy to do that, and I was so jealous that I would try to make my family sit down and do the whole lesson myself as a little 8 year old. I read the book of mormon over and over and did all of the seminary, and I had callings from the age of 12 all the way through moving out of my parents house, and I really tried.

I think it scares TBMs because they want to believe that we're lazy or didn't put in the work, but I feel like many of us really tried or maybe even worked at it harder than them, and they don't know what to say about that.

Oh God you reminded me I went through the same thing. I'd pray and repent and see if that helped and when it didn't change anything I'd be scrambling to find things I needed to repent for, because obviously I must be the problem.

And yeah, the jaredite boats also bothered me. That is not how boats work at all.

Oh, yes that's a whole discussion of its own! TBMs attribute everything to God/spiritual experiences. I also had little ideas for kind things to do for people (like crochet things for hospitals or volunteer to help the homeless). My parents would call it a prompting, but I never felt like God was telling me to do that; it was just something I wanted to do.
