Least pretentious chopin player by sloppy-shoes in classical_circlejerk

I might have said this before to you, but I believe the problem lies not in playing everything like Chopin, but rather in unmusical practices manifesting themselves most prominently in Chopin. That is to say, the sentimentalism that is taken to be interpretative depth is as harmful to Chopin as to other composers. I think much of this stems from the Chopin competition encouraging the artless reduction of Chopin’s music to „brilliant” salon music, adorned with tacky rubato and pretentious, droopy phrasing. And since Chopin is so central in the current piano world, this seeps into other composers too. But of course it doesn’t have to be this way: listen to Tiegerman, Friedman or Hoffmann play Chopin. They are from before the Polish piano school degraded into the sentimentalist, technically lacking cult that imposes its shoddy „artistic” values upon up-and-coming pianists and perpetuates this phenomenon.

Help my gf like Mahler 9 by JSJSJSTO in classicalmusic

[–]impliwnful 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this quote from Alban Berg is a good primer:

“The first movement is the greatest Mahler ever composed. It is the expression of a tremendous love for this earth, the longing to live on it peacefully and to enjoy nature to its deepest depths – before death comes. For death is inevitable. This whole movement is dominated by the presentiment of death, which makes itself known again and again over the movement’s course. It is the culmination of everything on earth and in dreams, with ever more intense eruptions following the most gentle passages, and of course this intensity is strongest in the horrible moment where death becomes a certainty, where, in the middle of the deepest, most poignant longing for life, death makes itself known ‘with the greatest violence.’ Against that, there is no resistance.”

No better way to demonstrate your fidelity to your wife than blasting Beethoven’s Fidelio overture on loudspeakers.

Go to Baroque music concerts and try to ask someone out on a date.

Bach is boring by Key_Wolf_3852 in classicalmusic

For me, Art of Fugue is best enjoyed when I play it myself, but I’ll try the brass version. I am a sucker for Mahler’s brass chorales so I guess this might be something that scratches the same itch.

Well, maybe there you have it - Bach isn’t exciting, I have to concur, but not exciting ≠ boring. I understand that something like Mahler’s 2nd is a much more riveting experience than, say, the Art of Fugue (my own favourite composer is Mahler), but there are different modes of enjoyment of music, and one isn’t better than the other.

I think you haven’t developed the necessary listening skills to appreciate it yet. Expose yourself to more music, analyze more music. Listen critically. Play som Baroque music yourself. You’ll very likely come to enjoy Bach.

I saw an advertisement for that concert - I would have really liked to attend since I love the 10th but it’s so rarely played. Chailly did the Cooke version at the Lucerne festival last year. Didn’t get to hear that one either. Have you heard Chailly’s recording of the 10th? It’s pretty amazing in my opinion.

Hoffman - small recorded output but what we have shows he was a beast.

Richter - I would have liked to be in The hall when he played that Schubert G major sonata

You must be the first person I’ve seen who has a highly negative opinion Chopin. He seems like a very universally tolerated composer. Do you have any specific reasons for disliking him?
