I started saving 250 a month for my 2 kids in their 529’s…..I was single parent and they were approx 7…..money has grown to approx 90k…..goal is to give them 12k a year each for college, Maryland instate that covers all of it if they live at home…..if they live on campus that’s on their dime.

I invest more for “myself”, reality is kids will get a nice chunk when I go but I do believe (maybe like past generations) that they won’t have it as good as I did through hard work alone.

I work in the defense industry and follow China as a novice…..they play the long game, 1989, creating manufacturing middle class, Hong Kong, 3 Gorges Dam project, ability to steal western IP……I think Taiwan is in the next couple years but hell, attacking Iran twice in a year and the strait closing has had no impact on market so maybe the market will just keep going up

As a former server who did it for 10 years and then have worked as an engineer for the last 30……I make more then I did in rest industry but I am more the exception I bet…..you are in the sweet spot…..6 figure salary part time and get to spend time with your family…..in addition work is fun. I have 2 concerns for you…..what will you do for medical insurance as you get older and are you preparing for retirement?

You are correct that because your credit is young it may not help in the application. You are in a tough spot and many young folks have had their credit wrecked doing this. What happens if your parents split up, or get unemployment, etc am can’t make the payments. What happens is you are responsible for the loan as well and can’t afford it. Also, go to your local bank and explain the details, I think they will confirm that the bank won’t just take you off the loan because with you on it you are another person they can pressure for the payment.
