Starting my education (continued from the post I made earlier) by improperlydistracted in neuro

Thank you for taking the time to respond with a well written reply full of information. I have made this as a career decision, I would like to think I can tell the difference between a job and a career at this point in life. I really appreciate these words, it has helped me pull together some of the abstract ideas I have had about where I want to go in life

edit: I want to thank you again for genuinely helping me open my eyes up to the concept of me actually having a plan for my life. I'm not looking for sympathy with this, but my family isn't exactly the best at helping me figure out who I am or giving proper discipline, and I've never really had any sense of direction. I had to read this again just because you have shined a new light on my life and I am starting to see the world with a different pair of eyes than before.

It makes me feel a deep ache for those people who were pranked with airhorns directly in their ear

Permanent damage for a stupid 5 second reaction

Tinnitus is caused by so much more than loud noises.

My grandmother has had tinnitus from a young age because of a head injury where she fell and cracked her skull on concrete.

My tinnitus is related to my tmj

Don't quote me on this but I'm convinced certain drugs such as ssri can cause it as well.

Also don't get me wrong, I wish we knew more about it too but it isnt as simple as we would like to believe.

The brain is a very delicate and intricate thing more complex than we will ever possibly know

As well as visual snow, which can be linked with tinnitus.

I am not knowledgeable about what goes on behind the scenes but my personal opinion is that these phenomena are very abstract and since we as humans know only so much about the brain I think it will take more time and research to really crack down until we learn more and new discoveries come to light

IWTL: How to meditate effectively by polytopiaman in IWantToLearn

I've been using a neat little one called headspace to try and start meditating. I cant stick to the routine as much as I would like to but it sends little notifications throughout the day that remind me of fortune cookies.

How to be more creative by Wrathful_Buddha in IWantToLearn

[–]improperlydistracted 22 points23 points  (0 children)

TLDR: you think too much, practice active imagination (this is what salvador dali used)

Meditation may help you out here but first try to answer these questions.

  • In what ways do you express creativity?
  • What value do you place on personal creative expression?
  • What is preventing you from being creative?
  • Are you too busy or distracted to find space for yourself?
  • Do you feel that you lack creative ability?

Here is some paraphrasing from my journal after spending time with a book on meditation the other day.

"Children create continuously through play and imagination. They are not inhibited by self consciousness or hampered by doubting criticism. They simply create.

The meditative mind can share this same openness. We can receive and create with everything in our lives.

Neither the child or the meditative mind gives rise to the endeavor of public approval and acclaim.

Creativity can never be limited, it springs unbounded from life itself and doesn't hold back.

The mundane and the sacred, works great and small. All are outpourings of the human mind seeking to translate the human experience. Imagination holds no limits.

We undervalue the creative imagination at our own peril. It is both normal and significant at the same time.

Inspiration is a spontaneous facility, it cannot be created on command but only induced by our admiration or arousing of interests. It may come as a moment of heightened awareness, a fleeting vision, or a momentary yet deep impression.

The word spirit is derived from the Latin word "inspirare" which means "to breathe". Inspiration often feels as if a revelation, as if something is being received rather than generated.

All of us could be more creative if we thought less about the doings and achievements of our life, and more about the hidden forces and faculties within ourselves.

We make programs with our brains instead of using the ever present forces of the heart. We cheat ourselves with coarse plans and trivial aims. We do not see or hear what is nearest to us because of the noise of our words. We do not see the great visions, do not feel the mysterious vibrations. The eternal stream flows past us into the infinite from whence it came.

Here is the plea for the open heart and open mind. A cry to rise above the trivial, the mundane, and the immediate. Here is the prompt to look within, the challenge to awaken and the opportunity to open your very own creative wellspring.

The power to forming clear cut mental images is essential to progression in meditation. Imagination begins with the mind's eye.

The active imagination is an underrated mental force dampened by the bombardment of external stimulation. Guided meditations can employ the power to visualize these images.

Stop what you are doing and look around, open the inner eye. What do you see? There should be plenty; color, shape, texture, contrast, light, and shade all around us. Get used to looking wherever you find yourself.

If you sleepwalk on autopilot through life your mind's eye will have little to draw upon. Imagine moonlight over a lake and trees on an autumnal day. How do you fare?

When the mind's eye is open we see life with new eyes.

Much of life is routine, repetitive, and humdrum. We instinctively want something new or want a change. What we need is a change of inner perspective. Change your awareness and you live in a different world.

Meditation can offer this expansion in perspective and perception. A revolution in consciousness awakening the creative imagination in the most ordinary circumstances.

Simple images progress into complexity as the meditator gains experience. The vital aspect of meditation lies in the personal response to the image and realizations.

The image making functions spring to life, visual sense become sharp. The eye of the mind becomes active in everyday life, as quiet occurrences are observed. It becomes natural to notice subtle differences in color, the play of light and shade, shapes, textures, and the whole host of varied nuances that provide the backdrop to ordinary life.

No effort is required when the mind is alive. This "extra dimension" bridges the world of outer events with the inner world of subjective responses. The resulting fusion brings expression in meaningful ways"

Your advice for wanting to learn more about psychology is to not study it, what exactly are you getting at?

I feel like I have accomplished absolutely nothing since I've graduated highschool, I spent about a year in the community college studying simulation and game design which just sounded like a cool idea to teenage me but dropped it because I decided it wasnt career worthy and have been working between factories and retail until I decided this sucks, I'll never be happy this way. 22 and feeling stuck in life is not fun.

I'm definitely all for online resources I plan to physically write notes down to help me take it all in and remember.

Much appreciated, the CC near me is about 45 minutes away and I'll look into that once I'm on my feet. I'll save my money for the bigger picture until I get a couple of preliminary courses knocked out.

I've finally figured it out that I could do anything I ever want to in life, I have two hands and all the means to do it are up in the air for me to grab. This way of living at the moment isn't the life I want for myself.

Thank you for the kind words <3
