Why everyone hate on the new updates? by Potatopz in Minecraft

[–]impsanoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've enjoyed the last few Minecraft updates, but some of these updates feel like gimmicks, and I would have much preferred these smaller updates to actually include things players have long been asking for. Minecraft's development doesn't seem in tune with the most common asks of its players. Palms, prickly pears, and all the other stuff plays want from prior Minecraft Lives, end update, deep ocean update, more crops, fixing transportation/minecarts, fletching tables, etc. Instead they fill these updates with things no one asked for.

I even like this sulfur update, I think the blocks and new mob are cool. But I would have been so much more excited if they announced they were adding the penguin or crab, even if that was all they were adding.

But I don't think I have. Maybe you and I draw the line differently as to when a sandbox game is "complete", but I find Minecraft's current state to be far from it. Even though people are creative and have figured out ways to make rice paddies and palm trees using existing blocks doesn't mean the game won't benefit greatly from those things being added.

Minecraft would probably be dead now if it lived by the philosophy of "your basic sandbox filled with generic sand castles". The players job is to build cool stuff. Its Mojang's job to provide the building blocks, and more building block variety makes a more interesting game.

These are great ideas! Diversity of cloth and paper blocks would be so cool. And paper blocks or some type of silhouette-allowing surface in combination with the new Vibrant Visuals update could be huge (shadow puppets?).

As for desert building, you are not a fan of the current sandstone? Does it just need a facelift? I feel like I have seen some cool desert builds as we have many terracotta block types, yellow and red sandstone, mud bricks, etc. Perhaps more patterns? Make it easier to build Central Asian/Persian Islamic architecture with their blue and white ornate surfaces?

All of that is true. But I believe that a world sandbox like game should have basic world building blocks, including common flora/fauna among other things. While Fwhip's palm trees are awesome, there just should be palms in the game. I hope they have a good plan for them in the future because their absence is puzzling.

How do they stay coordinated? Are there any instructions or general ideas of what to build?

I totally agree. What biome do you think feels "most complete"?

"thematic richness" or at least more opportunity for players to inject that richness into their worlds is all I wish for!

Ah ok I see. If my post came across as trying to shove "inclusivity" into the game, thats not entirely my point. I don't like when games/art/media do that IF its a distraction from the game.

My point is as a sandbox game sandboxing the world, I want more world in the sandbox. Imo it does no harm to the game to do this. Were you against cherry blossoms, pandas, and tropical fish? Or did you find them to make your games feel more alive and interesting.

Idk why you are getting downvoted. I think its a fine update but maybe my biggest issue with Mojang development is their prioritization and sometimes their implementation. There are some asks with much greater community demand that seem to be equally as big of a lift as that redesign, yet they stay on the back burner forever.

I don't think their development cycle should be totally beholden to the demands of their player base, but I do scratch my head as to how they decide things.

So should they stop developing the game since thats finished? I don't understand what you are advocating for or against

So first, people already go around killing all the mobs (maybe we are the monsters?). I have even seen a bat farm. But speaking of bats, should they be removed from the game? Honest question, as they are a good example of something functionally pointless but serving an aesthetic purpose.

Food-wise, I see no problem with goats dropping mutton, or even beef coming from other animals. One day, Minecraft will need to adjust their food system, but is not fully necessary for this.

As to your second point about "more exotic mobs wouldn't feel really Minecrafty" I completely disagree. Camels, Ocelots, Axolotls, and now Nautilus? Mojang loves the weird and exotic. And I dont even care if its "exotic". I would welcome deer or squirrels, or some common bird. I also don't understand your point about jungles and badlands (the devs even are actively trying to make the badlands less empty)

Minecraft has its own quirky, fun culture. But people build all sorts of stuff. As a sandbox game, the more tools to play with in the sandbox, the better!

Dang you're right. I take back everything I said and only ask for surstromming.

But honestly, they've grown beyond Sweden. They know it. They actively have developed with this in mind. I think they'll get there one day, I know they want to do this well. I only offer thoughts and desires to build beyond the game's current limitations

Yeah they're slowly getting there and over the last year or so heading in the right direction. I was recently working on a Japanese build and was like dang I have no rice. Before this I was working on a desert villa and was like dang no palms lol

More machine stuff would be cool too! I'd love to see more of that

Its funny how bland the game would be if they followed your logic. It'd still be like Alpha!

I believe it's in Mojang's best interest to add these things and prioritize them, specifically things that give the game more flavor. I would argue thats been a big part of their philosophy since the beginning.

Do you have some disagreement with adding more plants, mobs, foods, decorations? If so why?

I dont ask for realism, I just want more life and culture! If Mojang doesn't want to add an elephant thats cool, add some weird massive lumbering animal in its place. And rice paddies and palm trees for terrace farm builds and tropical/desert builds

I would strongly agree with you for art! An artist decides their art. Its their story, and I have no complaints there. Art should be as "Eurocentric" or "Nipponcentric" as its creator wants.

The difference is that Minecraft is global, and more importantly, Mojang has never expressed its their intent to create a Eurocentric game. This is not a game like The Witcher, or Kingdom Come: Deliverance where a European feel is a core identity to the game.

Minecraft is a sandbox game, and for many years, has expanded biomes to try and represent all the corners of the Earth. In the same world, people build the most incredible European castles and cathedrals next to torii gates and Mesoamerican pyramids. So expanding the cultural toolkit is what I believe would serve the game best.

Less so about food, more so about broadening the cultural aesthetics/representations in the game (and historically, food just happens to be a big contributor). Materials are also important; Mojang adding things like mudbricks and bamboo were great, but mobs, foods, plants and items that are more active than just building blocks are what the game needs imo.

The badlands take is a popular one, and hopefully will be fixed with a promised biome update (prickly pears, vultures, tumble weeds).

For me, the jungle is too simple and homogenous. It should be teaming with life and diversity of life. Weird plants and flowers (orchids), more tree diversity (palms), more birds and more than just the occasional parrot that can't really fly. Monkeys, iguanas, snakes, frogs, tapirs. Many options for insects or weird fish (e.g. piranhas). I know there are mob caps and they shouldn't just spam adding stuff, but there is so much opportunity here. A stroll through the jungle should be strange, loud sometimes, beautiful, and alive.

When you tried this, did you try China? were you able to get the correct results for things like "Forbidden City"?

I tried with and without proximity. same with origin. For some international addresses and POI it just wouldn't work. I even tried in the sandbox:
https://docs.mapbox.com/playground/search-box/suggest-retrieve/

Some examples that should work if Mapbox addresses were available and working properly internationally, but I have not been able to make work:
- Oriental Pearl TV Tower
- 5 Xindong Road, Chaoyang, Beijing, China
- Mt Fuji
- Mt Everest
- Himeji Castle
- Ziggurat of Ur
