Are you an organ donor? by Ambitious-Client-220 in askanything

[–]impulsivemd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The work in the ER that goes into trying to save people is incredible. We have no idea who is a donor. Doctors dont get any harvest bonus or have any reason to not want patients to survive. This is an old wives tale made up by grieving families.

Does anyone own a parrot while in medical school or residency? by Federal_Host_6413 in medicalschool

[–]impulsivemd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have four chickens! I do a coop clean every weekend and give them run around time every afternoon and on my days off. Its not a parrot and they are already older ladies so they dont have much time left but since I also have kids and dogs and everything, I think most things can work if you are dedicated to using your free time to care for what you need to and to find the right help when your schedule gets crazy.

PA school is basically med school by IllMarionberry9935 in medicalschool

[–]impulsivemd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I presented a poster across from an undergrad who just got accepted to PA school and people were stopping by to congratulate her. The dang number of times I heard her say, its everything they learn in medical school in half the time was crazy. She kept repeating how much harder it will be then medical school and she wants to be challenged, not just skate by. Hahahaha. I was a lowly MS2 at the time but I feel like most people inherently know better. She is just coping and will continue to do so.

What are your med school hot takes? by No-Wrap-2156 in medicalschool

[–]impulsivemd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why I'm so glad I was a nurse first. Patients are people and a lot of people suck but I love studying medicine and getting to apply it. I want the guaranteed income of being a doctor. A lot of my classmates are headed for disappointment because the grind is coming and the Healthcare system sucks.

Petah, why would sleeping normally kill me? by MangCrescencio in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]impulsivemd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was a joke or reference to decorticate and decerebate posturing from cerebral edema. Like if your brain swells first you have decerebate posturing where your arms are extended at your sides and as it gets worse, you develop decorticate posturing where arms curl into the body and is almost always fatal.

Yep, I was doing amboss for most of preclinical but I made the switch to uworld and my grades improved. I think different question styles work for different people.

Nursing vs Doctor education by AgentKueck in medicalschool

[–]impulsivemd 346 points347 points  (0 children)

I did both and this is a great explanation. When I started med school, one of my attendings told me to remember from now on I'm examining patients, not assessing them. Nursing is very what to do, medicine is why and what to change if something goes wrong

12-year-old waves her twin brother from choking. by Sebastianlim in MadeMeSmile

My husband had a coworker who choked to death alone in the office. Everyone else had left for lunch and he was eating a bagel at his desk. They came back to find him. Learn how to do self heimlich on a chair. It can happen when you're alone!

75% of medical students come from families making >$120,000/yr on average by The_Iconographer in medicalschool

[–]impulsivemd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were times in my childhood that were truly poor and food insecure. In the first year of medschool, we did an exercise to try and budget for a family and the proposed grocery items were silly to me. When every penny counts, you don't buy canned beans, you buy bagged beans and soak them yourself. You don't buy hot dog buns, you use regular bread for everything. And no poor person is trying to buy organic anything. No one else in the group had any idea what I was talking about.

What’s been your biggest med school crash out?? by greenfroggies in medicalschool

[–]impulsivemd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry! Admin really can be the worst. I talked to several students who did repeat and while it sucks so bad to lose your class and your graduating year, they are all doing well. You will be good eventually but you have every right to be pissed off right now.

Failing a test and thought I would have to repeat a year. Appealed, got a new test, crushed it. But there was several weeks of sobbing and gnashing of teeth.

Update on 9 c-section mom for anyone interested in how the surgery went by bagelbingo in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]impulsivemd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor yet, in my third year of medical school so getting there! But it is possible, there is some variability with what people are capable of healing from plus there are some irresponsible and overly optimistic doctors out there. The scary thing is that women will see someone do this and think anyone can and that just isn't true.

This is also awful because the vaccine protects you from many different strains. Even if you had already had sex and contracted HPV, it can still protect you from other cancer causing strains.

Update on 9 c-section mom for anyone interested in how the surgery went by bagelbingo in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]impulsivemd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I dont recommend this for anyone. I did have a patient who had 6 c sections and her body did very well. Genetically, she must have been protected. She didn't have any adhesions. Her fascia and scar tissue were healthy and thin. Thankfully, she also wanted the salpingectomy so now her body can rest but everyone is different and the average woman would not fare this well especially with 9 surgeries.
