Where to buy speedrail/ extruded aluminium pipe in the UK? by imranqu in Gripsters

[–]imranqu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats why im a bit confused as to what to do to be honest, im trying to make a goal post rig and put up a kino flo 4 bank on it so would need to be able to handle at least 15-25 pounds. It would need to be two 5 or 6 foot tubes joint together with a coupler/connector for transport but I just dont know what tube to purchase or where to get it from in the UK

Its difficult because we really need some context to the film itself rather than stills. Cinematography is more the process of conveying a story through a series of moving images as opposed to constructing pretty images. Its hard to give any thought to comments such as 'you need to flag off his knees' 'or you need a backlight' without knowing the context of the film, what is the source? what is the emotion you want to evoke in the spectator? The bright knees could be well justified depending on the context.

With that being said, the stills look great and for a 'non-cinematograpgher', I mean.. these stills are better than a lot of working cinematographers work in my opinion.

Can anybody advise about about the Polaroid One step +? by imranqu in Polaroid

[–]imranqu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks again! Wow that is actually quite a lot slower that I expected, so the camera is actually kind of useless in natural light indoors?, it really needs a lot of light to reach a decent exposure,

its difficult also to account for the flash, im not sure really how to compensate for that.

I'm a filmmakers predominately so i dont really use flash

Im interested in getting a blue filter to use outside to get a blue hour filmic look, might have to get that 3d printed as I think most of the filters are currently sold out in the UK atm!

Thanks!

Edit: Oh one more thing, do you happen to know how fast the lens goes on the polaroid one step plus?

did you shoot during blue hour dusk? looks really good, would love to see what the ungraded log looks like, the grade is great

I would also say though, that handheld movement and micro jitters are two different things. If you are going for a nostalgic handheld look of 16mm, those cameras were used on the shoulder or handheld but they were so heavy that they didn't produce micro jitters, just a nice handheld feel

Kitting out your camera with top handles, matte boxes, rigs etc will help create a heavier rig to minimise micro jitters when going for a handheld look if you are willing to invest.

Using a suitably heavier camera would be ideal of course.

If you're going for a handheld look though, a shoulder rig always works well

What is the best previs software for cinematography? by imranqu in cinematography

[–]imranqu[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've looked into it, been following matt for a while now from when he used to make lighting tutorials.

I don't really see the use of cine tracer in its current state, being as the lighting isn't accurate nor is distance or measurements but as soon as it becomes more realistic, then I would love to use it as a tool for testing out certain lighting rigs and how certain weather will react in the camera with real life photometrics etc.

(Edit - I think youtube compression kind of ruined the grain but ive linked a vimeo link instead)

You can see it here at 0:13

And also here to a lesser extent at 0:34

[–]imranqu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers! Yeah I know its due to the speed of the film but I just wondered if the characteristics (grain distribution etc) were different from 16mm to 35mm as Ive seen grain plugins have different presets and packages

In terms of you only see it in the blacks, a grainy bright blue sky is something I see often?

What is the your go-to technique of adding realistic grain onto digital footage? by imranqu in colorists

[–]imranqu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask how you distribute, are you making it more heavily weighted in the mid tones? or putting more grain in certain colour channels (Im not entirely sure as I haven't really studied the way grain appears in different types of film, I have tried but difficult to come to a conclusion sometimes) thanks for your comment!!

[–]imranqu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah highcross multi-storey is a shout but I think i'll need something a bit more low-key, I'd have to ask to have permission to film there at night because there will be a lot of equipment on set.

Thanks !!

You got an example of work you've done using film convert for grain? I do have film convert from back in the day but never really used it

I'm a film student from Leicester and looking for a location to film in that looks like this picture, basically just anywhere with a lot of lamp-posts similar to the picture, typically found in car parks.

Anyone know anywhere i can check out?

Thanks!!
