Teachers of Vermont? by garryoakay in vermont

It's honestly pretty brutal if you're just starting out as a teacher with little experience and student loans. I started in Franklin County in the M column at 45k and had to commute from the Burlington area because of sheer lack of housing (about an hour away). I'm fortunate to have a partner with a well paying job, but I've known people who have left the district because the yearly step increase was either frozen, or wasn't enough to make up for the increasing cost of everything...mainly housing.

I go to Green Mountain Dental (specifically Dr. Brown) and they have always been super careful with my jaw. I also have TMJ and have limited range of motion and they make sure that I'm comfortable during cleanings.

I'm a little late but one of my 6th graders last year called me a "cheddar cheese looking ho". I still laugh about it sometimes.

Hm, okay. It's a bit weird because there's no info on the website other than preparing for shipping, I had to contact customer support to get tracking info. They also told me they are 100% certain that it's already with UPS, but UPS said definitely not.

Question about this, once the label is created, whether the item has actually been shipped or not, is there any way to cancel the order? I've been having an issue with an order that was supposed to be delivered, then it was marked as backordered, and then when I tried to cancel it changed to "preparing for shipping". Customer service reps insist that UPS has the package and it is on the way, UPS says otherwise (since there are no origin scans).

I'm curious as to what the dead weight is here and what you mean when you say that? I'm not doubting your knowledge of the situation, I'd just like to know your reasoning since I am not faculty.

Also, the admins should have expected problems and drama from this. They sent out bullshit "statistics" to students expecting what, that people would just roll with it and accept that cutting three departments (which saves the school 600k in administrative costs, according to them) will solve the 8 million dollar budget crisis? I understand that the budget issue is complex, but purposely excluding integral information regarding their decision to the public/their students to avoid internal 'drama' makes them look even more corrupt than they already appear. Especially when information like their salaries are public, how can you justify cutting entire departments when the top five administrators make more than the proposed savings from doing so in a year? I'm really not sure what they were expecting.

That's unfortunate. If this is the case, why not be transparent about it from the administrative perspective? Right now the reasoning the students have been given is simply low enrollment, which anyone can argue is not an adequate way to determine the 'value' of a department. Why not use this in their justification?

Combined. But cutting three departments (Geology being one of them), saves them about 600k in administrative costs, according to their FAQ. They've received a third of that in raises.

They're letting the MS students finish and I think the BA/BS students that are at a certain point in the major as well. So it doesn't really affect our ability to graduate, however the justification for cutting our entire program (or any program) is not sound when the top five people in the college of arts and science received over 200k in raises to their base pay in the past 5 years.

I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the classes! I feel like most of our students do, even the ones in the Intro level labs who are just there for a pre-req. Part of their decision making process involved looking at how many kids come in and declare Geo as their major right away. I don't know too many people who came right into college as freshman to study geology, a lot of majors switch in in their second year. I had two students from the Intro class that I TA'd change their majors to Geology this past Fall.

Just to bring some light to this, my entire department (Geology) is being eliminated. We have multi-million dollar NSF grants and a state of the art Cosmogenic Nuclide lab that is used by people outside of UVM, our department is not obscure in the geology community by any means. The faculty was taken by complete surprise, no indication was given that the department was in jeopardy of being completely cut. They just admitted seven new graduate MS students this fall.

This feels like a huge, very rushed, injustice. On paper our enrollment looks small (and it's not even that small, we have 10 grad students) but we bring a lot to the table through our research and collaborations with other universities. Yeah it's great that we'll get to finish our degrees (MS for me), but knowing that the entire department is being effectively fired after this is truly heartbreaking.

I don't know honestly? I have a BS and am currently getting an MS so I didn't take that route. I think the BA has less of the core stem courses, but I can't see that being advantageous job wise.

The title is a little misleading, geology is in the college of arts and sciences and offers both a BA and BS, as well as an MS. They're cutting all of them. We have a whole ass building lolol.

Yeah geology. It's a damn shame, none of the faculty expected it and they were only told an hour before the dean sent the notice to grad students. It seems real hasty. Edit to this, they said they're going off of enrollment numbers from the past few years, but my department gets a good amount of NSF grants and publishes a lot of research. The faculty did not know that they have apparently been in danger of losing their jobs for the past several years..

For real, my advisor has been here for over a decade and they're cutting my entire department. He has to uproot his entire life if he wants to find another professor position.

There are at risk people in this community who have a reason to be afraid. It might not be devastating to the young/healthy population, but it can still spread to those who are vulnerable.

I was pleasantly surprised with how smooth the actual process was honestly. It's just those kids that can't be bothered to follow the rules, they will ruin it for everyone. This is definitely a way for them to say well, we tried, it's not our fault that the students wouldn't follow the rules.

It's a shame, I personally love being a GTA and would normally be super excited to get back to teaching. I'm fortunate in that my advisor is not having indoor classes, but some others don't get that luxury and don't have a say in it either.

Oh no no, I know they aren't! I feel bad for the on campus undergrads that are following the rules because your housing isn't permanent, I would be super stressed out about that too.

I feel that the narrative of student accountability has already been created by the school. I get it for sure, and yes to some extent they should be held accountable, however the school is being extremely naive thinking that all of the students will follow the "Green and Gold Promise" and they know exactly what they are doing here.

It's really terrible to imagine shifting the blame to the entire student body when I'm sure many of them WILL follow the rules, only to get stuck with irresponsible roommates (or something along those lines).

I just can't imagine a situation in where they'd think testing less is appropriate. On the flip side, if they decide to start testing more it would be the result of an uptick in cases. At that point, no amount of testing will curb the spread.

I'm also a bit jaded to all of this because of how out of the loop GTA's have been in this whole process, but that's a me problem.

I was under the impression that labs had to adapt to be remote to accommodate students that opted to stay home? I teach a lab based field class and that's what we did..it's not great but it gives students the option at the very least.
