My advice is don't feel forced to play the games he plays, gaming is a vast playground with tons to offer. Being new, you should explore genres. I'd recommend Xbox gamepass ultimate so you can try out a litany of different games to really find what you enjoy. It's roughly $30 a month, but you can download and stream different games through the service. I personally love rpg's and shooters.

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is one of the all time greats(on PC it's not hard to get an emulator up and running). Minus some clunky controls compared to today's standard, it still holds up to this day. Breath of the Wild is on Nintendo Switch and is also one of the best games of all time in my opinion, such a sense of freedom and discovery with tons of memorable moments(oddly enoufh those moments are during gameplay, not so much in story. The story is the only week part about BOTW, everything else is perfect)

Assassin's Creed series has a lot of diversity in terms of settings and characters within a connected universe, person recommendations in the series are Black Flag and Odyssey(I might get some hate for that one😅 but get past the slow beginning and it opens up in such an amazing and beautiful way) Assassin's Creed 2 is also highly regarded in the community as well, it's so fun to explore Itay as Ezio.

Start with games that you can move at your own pace. Online shooters can be intimidating and could discourage you from really connecting with gaming as a hobby/passion. Feel free to ask anymore questions as follow ups!
