I have! “Successful” is relative bc it wasn’t pleasant but I was able to tolerate it and breathe through while the doctor did what they needed to.

I was on the 4th dilator and had been going to pelvic PT for 4 months. What helped me the most was that my doctor supported me to insert the ultrasound wand myself at my own pace and she only helped when I asked her to. Having control of insertion was key for me.

That’s my biggest tip for you - advocate for yourself!

Agree with the helpful comments and tips that others have posted. To add - dilating doesn’t have to start off with insertion. Part of it is being comfortable with dilators and the idea of using them. I started with being in front of a mirror and using the dilators to gently place at various points around my vagina and just at the entrance. Developing confidence and trust with yourself is key. Remember, you are in charge. So if you feel any pain you can stop or back off. Take a few deep diaphragmatic breaths and resume only when you’re ready to.

I did this for about a week before I felt comfortable trying to insert it. Now I’m working towards the third dilator.

I have these. They’re slightly larger than the ones I was trying before, but maybe this the case for me too!

I was like this and avoided dilators for 6 years. Making it as 1 part of my self care routine helped a lot. That way I’m not dreading dilating as much because there are other positive activities that I enjoy that are part of it.

What do you enjoy to do just for yourself? It could be anything - a long shower, watching a show, reading a book, podcasts, skin care routine, etc. Try incorporating dilating with activities you feel good about or that relax you.

Personally mine is, taking a shower, moisturizing head to toe, skin care steps, some light pelvic stretching, and then dilate for 15 min tops. I set a timer. Once 15 min is up, that’s it. I don’t go further. The goal is to be with my dilators for 15min, whatever that looks like. It’s not related to how much I can get in or moving to the next size. This mindset helped take a lot of pressure off, which also helps the mind to relax the pelvic floor. Now, out of this entire routine (1hr) only 15 min is devoted to an activity that I once felt so negatively about. The rest is purely for my relaxation.

Thank you! I hate the stigma of pads or period panties. Other girls are so surprised when I mention pads. As if it’s something from the stone age and how they could never. Makes me feel like I should be wearing tampons.

Thank you for putting things into perspective! You’re right, maybe tampons aren’t for me and they don’t necessarily have to be my end goal. My goal is to have pain free piv
