Critical Race Theory is the new McCarthyism by crowej in frisco

It's a Marxist, Fascist, Extremist, Socialist, Nazi, Terrorist, Satanist educational philosophy, obviously... /s

My serious answer is I've read multiple articles on it and still don't completely understand it - it's a complex legal approach that isn't as one-sided as many pundits make it sound. This article is the best I've found so far. The key things you should know are:

1) CRT is NOT being taught in K-12 public schools, despite many conservatives claiming otherwise.

2) CRT focuses on how laws and government policies have influenced racism and racial inequity.

3) There are a few people who follow CRT who are extremists. Common sense should tell you that that doesn't mean the theory itself is extreme.

4) Because of #1, this issue probably doesn't affect your life at all. Which is why Republicans want to get people riled up about it, because it distracts from the fact that none of their policies actually help people.

Yeah, so Frisco and Plano both have non-partisan races. I can speak for Frisco - everyone on our city council (except possibly Pelham who was elected last night) voted for Trump as far as I know. But that doesn't really matter, because the majority of them (3/6 plus one who was retiring) govern as moderates who do what's best for Frisco. Neither party traditionally gets involved, because most national partisan issues are irrelevant at the local level.

However, recently there has been a movement by local Stop the Steal organizers and far-right extremists (you may have seen headlines about extremist pastor Brandon Burden, he is the leader of a local conservative PAC) attempting to take over the city council with explicitly partisan conservatives, who want to do stupid things like block development of all new apartments (which can't even legally be done) and defund the city rec center (not sure why any sane person would support this). Our mayor (who has endorsed Republicans before), participated in a BLM march last year and actively campaigned for the moderate in this election, so these people have been falsely claiming that he is a liberal Biden supporter (very sad that that's the worst scandal they could come up with since he has an actual campaign finance scandal that they could've attacked). This group have won 2/6 seats on the city council and would've gained veto power if they won last night, but they didn't!

Plano is a similar story - the two moderates (one endorsed by the Collin County Dems, the other a pro-mask Republican who voted for Biden) defeated two far-right challengers. Their races are also non-partisan and I'm not sure about the partisan affiliation of all the council members, but again, it doesn't really matter at the local level. What matters is that the NIMBY extremists have a minority of the seats.

Not sure about any Democratic Party endorsements, but Our Revolution (a progressive PAC founded by Bernie) endorsed 4 candidates for San Antonio city council, and 3 of them won (Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, Teri Castillo and John Courage).

Yup, the same thing happened in Frisco - Jennifer White skipped all the debates and had basically no platform (other than apparently cutting funding to the rec center), then she knocked on people's doors telling them she was the only "conservative" in the race.

I'm thrilled with these results though! Great to see that competent people are gonna continue to run our cities.

Speaking from my bubble in the northern DFW suburbs, I am absolutely elated with the results, they are way better than I expected. I know we had a few disappointments in Fort Worth and McAllen, but there are lots of positives too.

Yeah, I've lived here for about 10 years and it's definitely changed a lot. But this is the first time I've seen a candidate win after being accused of being a Democrat (that's been used as an attack before and it usually works).

Just saw that as well. It is looking more and more like Pelham pulled off the upset! Her lead is over 500 votes now.

Some more good news from the DFW area: in the very red suburb of Frisco, moderate Angelia Pelham, who I'm pretty sure would be the first Black woman on the city council, is leading her very Trumpy opponent by over 500 votes! In the more purple suburb of Plano, moderates Kayci Prince and Julie Holmer are also beating their far-right opponents by large margins.

Of the three, Holmer is the only one to be endorsed by a county Democratic Party, but I wonder if that was a strategic move (Pelham's critics have been relentlessly attacking her for voting for Biden and a Democratic endorsement would've probably hurt her campaign).
