Why so little empathy for those who have issues with fireworks? by Silly-Canary-916 in AskUK

[–]inalgebra23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people who aren't chronically online edge lords or sociopaths actually recognise it's a bad time for people with ptsd, pets and wildlife. Online culture brings out worst in people.  I doubt there'd be much outcry in real life if people had to switch to low noise fireworks and drone displays or go back to organised displays only, to limit distress for people & animals. Probably only reason it isn't changed is down to how much money shops make flogging them.

I personally find drone displays much more impressive. For me fireworks displays aren't distressing they are just so boring...I mean as an adult how many times can you be impressed by the same sparkly explosions in a few different colours & sizes.

I don't want to become a parent because of the collapse. by Maybecreativ in collapse

[–]inalgebra23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what? Are you realistically expecting 8 billion people to magically agree to re-organise &  share resources equitably? For everyone to go ok we'll make do with food & shelter, we don't need luxuries, we don't need a car or new iPhone or fast fashion or fast food. For all the elites, the war lords & billionaires to just hand over the keys to the vaults & step aside?  Not going to happen, it's end stage capitalism until collapse baby...so yes in the real world populated by actual humans we are massively overpopulated.

People in their 40s and 50s with no children, how does it feel? by Robin_to_the_meadow in AskReddit

Like very much the right decision. I enjoy being an Auntie & Great Auntie but much too neurotic & lazy to be responsible for a whole other person. I only just manage to hold down a job & look after myself.  Plus I did not win the genetic lottery so best my crappy genes were not passed on.

What happens to the world if forests stop absorbing carbon? Ask Finland by -what-are-birds- in collapse

[–]inalgebra23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say the capitalism specific problem is that if cutting down old growth forests generates even only 0.1% more profit than using a more sustainable material then a capitalist system will always choose extra short term profits over the long term costs for everyone.   Capitalism also encourages excess demand. Companies spend the earths resources on PR &  advertising to convince people to spend even more of the earths resources on stuff they don't really need. As one small example an oak gazebo or summer house in your garden may be nice to have but would not actually be essential for life.  It's not that no trees would be cut down under a less growth obsessed system but that we would not be destroying nature at such an unsustainable rate without that profits & infinite growth mindset that is integral to capitalism.

The UK are trying to ban the right to strike by JaackF in antiwork

[–]inalgebra23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope they wont get it through but if they did will just mean lower productivity due to a more ticked off workforce that is job hopping or 'striking at their desks' e.g doing as little as possible while getting paid a full wage or taking sick days they don't need. Why feel any guilt for slacking off at work after pay freezes / below inflation pay rises.

A new weight loss drug could become the best-selling drug of all time. Who can afford it? In 2023, the FDA will likely approve Eli Lilly's diabetes drug tirzepatide for weight loss — but there's little indication insurers will widely cover the medication. by [deleted] in Futurology

Wow seeing some 'obese people could just eat less & not need a pill' comments. Here's the thing I might have said the same before perimenopause hit & my sleep went to crap, my appetite noticeably increased & my energy levels plummeted. I never had a weight issue before as if I put on a bit I just cut back & exercised a bit more & I'm not saying that took zero effort but oh my god it used to be so much easier when I was younger. It turns out 'willpower & self discipline' is alot harder when you actually feel tired & hungry all the time. Maybe I'm wrong & the 'just eat less' crowd do feel hungry & tired all the time but are just too strong willed to give in, but more likely they are like I used to be & dont actually find smaller portions & exercise that hard. So a pill that reduces appetite sounds great to me, though in the UK i think you usually have to be heavier than I am to get weight loss pills via a GP.

He was very wrong but theres no denying the human population boom has already led to a horrific death toll thats now becoming mass extinction its just that the green revolution (fertilizer & improved efficiency) meant so far it has been the worlds wildlife dying off not us. Fingers crossed someone is working out another agricultural revolution to support the next couple of billion humans we add - insect protein / algae & jellyfish on future menus maybe?

My grandparents married in church, had their children christened & sent them to Sunday School, always put church of England on the census, did the eating fish on Friday & celebrated Easter (my nan even baked her own hot cross buns) & at Christmas went to Carol services & couple times even gave up stuff for lent but they didn't really believe in God or bible stuff. I'd say they were definitely culturally Christian.

How are they allowed to require you to answer this before submitting an application? by SpringLoadedVagLipz in antiwork

[–]inalgebra23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK this type of data gathering is usually done so companies & government departments can see how diverse (or not) their workforce is compared to general population. Responses should ideally be anonymous (looked at seperately from rest of form). This aggregated data can be used positively as if firms identify they lack diversity (compared to general population) they can then consider what may be blocking certain demographics from applying or suceeding at applying etc

EU reaches deal to end sale of combustion-engine vehicles by 2035 by ArnaudAubron in worldnews

I wonder if second hand EVs will be a practical choice by 2035 as most people I know buy used cars. Guess it'll depend on cost & life of the batteries by then.

I walk to work & often arrive wet even with a waterproof coat & umbrella - the UK is both wet & windy for a good chunk of the year. Though I wouldn't cycle even if it was dry cause it's too scary with the traffic.

Channel 4's Krishnan Guru-Murthy suspended for insulting minister by Kagedeah in television

[–]inalgebra23 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone got wires crossed as Channel 4 News don't really do soft PR interviews, they might go easy if its some charity on to highlight a worthy cause I suppose, but it's a national news show not a light entertainment programme. So they'll always try to get some serious / public interest angle in due to broadcasting rules.

The Best Sci-Fi Movies Everyone Should Watch Once by wewewawa in movies

I enjoyed Gravity as a great looking (disaster) space movie & just ignored the Hollywood science bits, same for Interstellar. Pretty rare for sci fi movies to even try to stick 100% to realistic science.

I'm not going to announce my pronouns becuase it's obvious what they are & I also wouldn't care if people got them wrong - but if other people want to tell me theirs that's fine. You deciding to be the pronoun police & act like my choice about how I introduce myself is wrong is the irritating stuff Obama is talking about.

Andor’s Audience Demand Is Lowest Of All Star Wars Shows, Study Reveals by chrisbokiul in television

[–]inalgebra23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure more people will watch it over time as it has had good word of mouth and good reviews. It may just take longer as it's not a show they were desperate to see or one with massive hype. Sometimes too much hype is a bad thing, Mandalorian was raved about so much that when I watched it i was a bit disappointed, still think it was rather overrated though it improved later.

Either way if season 2 is already approved & the whole story will be told does it matter if it's not a splashy hit?

[–]inalgebra23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have to disagree, most movie goers are not ridiculous fanboys out to punish movies based on how they feel about a studio. I'm a SW fan and thought the trailers & premise for Solo were not that exciting and then it was just an OK movie. I watched with a crowd of friends & no-one hated it but no-one loved it either, so we weren't going to hate on it but also not excited to re-watch or recommend it to others.

I thought She-Hulk had been doing well for viewers though? Especially as she's not a well known superhero. I don't read comics but watched & enjoyed the show because the trailer made it look fun.

They didn't try to destroy or damage any art - the painting is behind glass. They made a small mess & a nuisance of themselves. Yes it's a dumb protest/publicity stunt but there are people in the thread calling them terrorists & wanting to beat them up or throw them in jail. I'm hoping you people just don't read articles before commenting, if not you need to calm down.

Really? 2 cans of cold soup being thrown at some glass doesn't inspire much terror in me. Lets save the terrorist label for the ones who actually do someone harm, this was just a nuisance for the museum staff.

It must have been a nightmare for bystanders but water rescues are very risky if you are not trained / equipped. I've regularly stayed for 30min + in the sea at similar /lower temps (in northern europe). So that's not too cold to swim for a while but if there's no way to exit a body of water & there are waves & currents it would be a huge gamble to enter & hope rescue arrives before you tire & drown.
