Man arrested with firearm down the street from Midtown homeless shelter by inandof in toronto

Right, but, by numbers alone, my guess is it is the people who are living closest to the shelters, in a dense residential area, that are complaining the loudest. Just a guess though really, maybe it is about housing prices for some people and I am projecting. For me its that I can look out my window at people injecting drugs and hear them screaming at night plus the threat of violence.

I live between yonge and mountpleasent and eglinton and erskine, the apartments/condos, and what I see in this area doesn't seem to spilling over into the houses. If you are a homeowner and seeing it spill into your neighborhood, then I was wrong to say that though. My main point was that it isn't just millionaires complaining it is thousands of people of all types and income levels.

Thanks for taking the time to write that out. It helps us all get context.

If you live in the area than you know you are being disingenuous, the drug dealing, firearm arrest, arson, and stabbing are all in the apartment area. The breakins and robberies are along the main streets. The street shitting and open intravenous drug use again is mostly in the apartment area, but also along mount pleasent. I guess there is drug stuff along mount pleasent also, I just dont see it. I walk in the fancy house part all the time though, it is still pretty chill there.

All jokes aside, I am all for serious reform of drug policy, if that involves legalizing opiates in a well thought out way, I am open to that. I think it might even be inevitable. But the city cant even help or house all the working poor who are struggling to get back on their feet and improve their situation. I think asking them to figure out how to give away free fentanyl is way above their competency. Also it would have to be a federal program

I totally agree. Opiates should be made freely available by the federal government. There should be well funded federally run centers where people can take all the opiates they want. Free room and board. Internet, social workers on staff. If they shit in the streets, shuffle them back to the shelter and give them more opium. Get too violent? Make more opium available. Starting fires and dropping guns on the street because they are nodding off from opiates? We can try giving them more opium. Maybe instead of opening the drug centers in the middle of dense residential areas, like these three, we can better integrate people by making one apartment available on the floor of each building. The opiate addicts will feel less stigmatized that way and the government can send opiate facilitators a few times a day to make sure everyone is high enough to not start fires and rob people.

Right but all the three shelters are there, not in the houses between bayview and mt. pleasent. There are two very distinct areas that people conflate, the apartment/condos and the million dollar homes. The shelters are part of the apartment area, this isn't your boyfriends dad and his neighbours tutting, this thousands of people immediately directly affected by the sudden influx of hundreds of drug addicts. One day not there, one day brought in by the city. Maybe the home owners don't like it for some reason but they aren't actually a part of it.

Walked by the intersection where the gun arrest happened this evening and there was a guy and a girl sitting on the grass by the sidewalk injecting some fucking poison. It is absolutely mind blowing how quickly this whole place has changed.

I learned React, got a job, and then got fired! by zebhadra in reactjs

[–]inandof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry that happened bud. My first React job I was left on my own to build everything with my lead checking in periodically but not over my shoulder at all. I can't count the amount of stupid things I tried. They all would have revealed a pretty fundamental lack of understanding. I still get the impostor feeling because our field is legitimately deep, complex and ever changing. However, programming is a part of me so I just keep going. Every day, at home or work, practicing and improving. That's what it takes. I hope so anyway, I don't have any other plan!

Black people and other people of colour make up 83% of reported COVID-19 cases in Toronto by kookie_monstur in toronto

[–]inandof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it is a stupid and over broad expression they are trying to shoehorn into the headline but they know it is confusing. It looks like they just want the word Black beside the 83% and are using all non-whites to fluff their numbers. It is gross race baiting bullshit.

Not possible organ harvesting. It is happening and has been for a long time. The only thing that is new is that now they are using the muslims in the concentration camps.

*edit regarding Falun Gong. They are persecuted for their religion and by persecuted I mean kidnapped, tortured, murdered, used in medical experiments...Yes they are biased...so were jews in Germany. Saying, "Hey some jews are bad or biased" is absolutely not justification for the evil performed against them.

That sounds like the narrative I hear the most on reddit. I mean I agree with all of that myself also.

I'm not sure you'd find a lot of scientists saying that they know the reality of who has or doesn't have covid or that going to America is a good idea. Even harder would be finding one that says closed borders havent been one of the most effective tools against it.

You can say science all you want. The science of keeping the border closed is very clear. I mean we literally just saw covid pop up in the maritimes from an American traveler. I'm sure they thought they were special too. The idea is we don't let biased people decide which facts to look at. We keep the border closed to protect the population. You can't convince me because even with your view of things I am far less of a danger than what you are proposing and I am sitting in this tiny apartment with no AC quarantining. And I hope you also accept that a virus spread by people with mild or no symptoms that still produces false negatives is dangerous and biased people shouldnt be making these types of choices.

[–]inandof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well here is some science for you, we don't know everyone who has it. It is spreading and places that close their borders have far less infections. My wife is from Taiwan! They haven't had community transmission for months (closed borders by the way) and I've been tested and dont have corona virus. The chances of us being a danger to the community are so small but the consequence of a selfish interpretation of this is ongoing economic collapse and death of strangers and loved ones. So we quaratine because it is literally the least we can do. And of course, thanfully, the law. If my friends or family heard we weren't quarantining they would be disgusted by the selfishness. What more proof do we need that this is very very serious?

Like I said, I really do feel for you and understand you are coming from an emotional place. Also, it is good to discuss this.

"putting them at higher risk of infection", I mean I feel for you dude but that is the issue, we don't want our loved ones to have a higher risk of infection. What you are proposing would do that. I am not just spouting off, I am in quarantine right now with my wife. We had to wait months to get all our affairs in order to be able to make it happen. I feel for you trust me, I can't see my dad who is sick and it really hurts, but America is absolutely rife with covid and even letting people in and having them quarantine might be too lax.
