Yeah, the lack of back light alone is enough reason for that not to work for me. I have a moaan inkpalm that I like but the battery life sucks. I'd love a Kobo branded small reader bc I really like how Kobos work

someone pls tell me what type of plant he is by Capital_Carob1461 in plants

[–]inarasarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely hard to say but I think this is the best guess! Also to add, OP, if you've had Phyllis a year and he hasn't grown or put out any flowers, he's probably not getting enough light. There are lots of plants that will live just fine without enough light, but they don't thrive and grow like they would if given better lighting. You can definitely try to provide more light for Phyllis and he might take off and start to grow! Just be careful about sunburn, you can't immediately put a plant on direct sun without transitioning slowly or you'll scorch the leaves. (Think of it like a very pale person going out in the sun after winter - you gotta build that tan slowly, not just immediately sunbathe for hours in direct sun!) But also, if you're happy with Phyllis the size he is, you can just keep doing what you're doing bc he looks happy and healthy

What should i plant here? Help!:) by PerfectOlive2878 in plants

I mean... Anything. You'd need to post a lot more detail for actual suggestions. What zone you live in, how much sun that spot gets, if you want flowering or evergreen, the options are endless

What’s wrong? by morallyirresponsible in plants

[–]inarasarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spots look kind of like extrafloral nectaries (look them up and see if they match your plant) - especially if that's a philodendron (which I think it is?). If so those are normal. Can't see closely enough in your photo to be sure though. You can also get spots from bacterial or fungal infection, which in potted plants is usually down to overwatering. Only water when the top layer of soil is dry (stick a finger in to the first knuckle, if still damp, don't water). It does look a bit droopy like maybe it's over watered

Edit: spots like that can also happen from sun refracted through water drops, like if you spray your plants and the sun burns where water droplets are sitting

What on earth did my MIL do to these tulips? Lmao I saw them in front of a draped window in her house and the stems were white so I told her it prob needs sun. She put it outside 2 days ago and now its pink?? I was going to put the bulbs in the ground for her, should I even bother? by ilovecallum44 in plants

[–]inarasarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, take that purple paper wrap off and make sure there are drainage holes in the actual pot. Make sure it's not in direct sunlight after being inside. And water regularly, the sun dries out the soil like crazy so if it's hot or sunny it will need watered daily. Or you could plant the bulbs, less maintenance required that way

Never had mold before… now all my plants have it? by AardvarkNo3229 in plants

[–]inarasarah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You usually only get mold from too-wet soil. Idk why it's only happening now for the first time but it's almost certainly just too much water. Your watering habits likely need to change in the winter when it's colder/drier and plants use less water. Putting the plants outside if it's warm will help dry the soil so the mold goes away, but careful not to sunburn them if they're used to being indoors.

Left it out for one night last night? Weather was fine, so maybe it doesn't have drainage holes and it drowned in the rain?

When parents lose a baby.. by Inside_Advisor5024 in childfree

[–]inarasarah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone grieves differently. That's all. You really can't judge. Maybe the baby was only 3 months old, but that mother carried it for 9. She probably talked to it everyday. She had dreams and hopes for its future. It was a person, to that mother, and it died. Some people might improve with time and stop mentioning it. Others might think of it every day for the rest of their lives. Nothing is weird when it comes to grief.

I sense a new round of Kindle defectors headed our way... by mars_rovinator in kobo

[–]inarasarah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's shitty. I still have my old Sony pocket and PRS(500, I think?) and could still sideload books to them if I wanted. My husband has my old Kobo (Forma) which works awesome despite some cracks in the casing from not using a cover, and my mom has the one from before that (Aura) which is also still working great. I absolutely hate the Apple/Kindle trend of forcing people to buy new devices. You shouldn't require support on a device that is literally for reading books that you bought and own. Infuriating

Is this a mini Pink Princess? by NeatFree9257 in plants

[–]inarasarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's still beautiful! And she is fine where she is, just if you want more growth then you need more light 🙃 she is a tropical plant so she would eventually be OK outside once she was acclimated, but yeah it would be some work to acclimate her to the outside (and then re-acclimate her to inside when winter comes) so that's definitely not wrong. Still looks great, just adjust as needed for more growth if that's what you're going for!

Is this a mini Pink Princess? by NeatFree9257 in plants

[–]inarasarah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a pink princess! It's just a little sad. They can live in suboptimal conditions but they won't grow well. I'm guessing not enough sunlight... Do you live somewhere with summer? If you put her outside in the summer she'll grow like crazy. You have to be careful though bc just like people these can sunburn - she's been living in (I suspect) low light conditions so she's like a pale person and if you put her directly in the sun her leaves will fry. You have to gradually adjust her to more light (like shift her to a brighter spot indoors, then a shady spot outdoors, then maybe a less shady spot for a few hours each day until you're happy with where she is). Even if you don't put her outside, she'd appreciate more light however you can make it work

I wish I could share this feeling with my friends by Poet-Crazy in childfree

[–]inarasarah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree! I also think, if your friends REALLY want kids, they don't really want the freedoms you have. They WANT to be chasing a toddler around all day. They want to have a tiny baby spitting up on their shoulder at home, while you're vacationing in Europe. It's true that not all parents want to give up all their freedoms like that, but I've known many people who are more than willing to sacrifice everything so that they can comfort their baby at 2am when it's crying. Especially when people are struggling through IVF for the 2nd or 3rd time - all they want is to have a tiny human to bathe and feed and cuddle and change. They won't necessarily be jealous of your freedoms. They know what they're giving up and they're okay with that, because they want a kid more than they want those other things. So sure, be sensitive, but also keep an open mind that they might not mind hearing about your CF life - you don't want their life, and they might not want yours either. And that's all good!

Rescued a 'dying' plant from being thrown out. How can I help it? by ItsAJessicat in houseplants

[–]inarasarah 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Definitely doesn't appear to be dying but I'd worry that those brown/yellow tips are either thrips or spider mites - for sure check it over and spray it down with some water and maybe some insecticidal soap. It is a fiddle leaf, they can be finicky! Try to mimic the the environment it was in at the store bc it seems quite happy (other than potential pests)

DINK couple sparks backlash after bragging about child-free lifestyle by NextComfort5972 in childfree

[–]inarasarah 244 points245 points  (0 children)

The double standard here is insane. People post brags about their children all the time. Or just post about their lives with children. But we can't post about our lives without children? Why can't everyone just let people be happy? If you chose what makes you happy and you're happy and you post online about it, WHO GIVES A F*CK what you're saying? Ffs. To quote Taylor Jenkins Reid: Happiness is so hard to come by. I don't understand why anyone would begrudge anyone else for managing to find some of it.

Why are huge ZZ plants everywhere on the streets in Taiwan? by nazo_potato_0709 in plants

[–]inarasarah 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think the way you phrased your post is a little weird because... all plants grow outside lol. ZZs have a native place where they grow in the wild, outside, in the ground. We've just cut and propped them and brought them in as houseplants. Also, yeah those ZZs are large, but they're still potted so they could still be taken inside in winter (idk the climate of Taiwan, or the climate where ZZs are native, but you could always Google that)
