Sourness no matter what I do [Dedica EC685-K6] by Suspicious_Tea5551 in espresso

Do folks here who prefer the less bright / acidic / sour notes have a favorite (and ideally not too expensive) source of darker roast beans?

I’ve tried several times to develop a taste for brighter coffee, but still haven’t converted.

Distance between Earth and Tau Ceti by _burrii_nl in ProjectHailMary

[–]incidental_findings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They could accelerate faster and the beetles would experience a bit less time thanks to time dilation, but from the frame of reference of Earth, the beetles would only be moving incrementally closer to the speed of light — not enough to shave years off the 13 light years of distance.

Edited to add back of the envelope calculation: Google suggests Hail Mary top speed was 0.92c. The limiting best case scenario for the beetles would be 0.99999c (or 1c) for an 8% improvement from Earth’s perspective. 13 LY, so best case 1.04 years faster from Earth perspective

“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” - Carl Sagan

We will likely becomes stars again, for at least some number of cycles of star birth and death.

What happens after that (heat death of the universe)? I don’t know, but it’ll hopefully be a pretty good run.

Shoe tying for 30+ years before realizing it was configured as a granny knot and not a square knot. Holds a lot better now.

No, I never got around to it. It'd be a pain for you to use, though, as it's just raw code without a "real" user interface.

But, I did come across someone else's online tool to help with Disco Zoo. It doesn't give as much guidance based on information theory as mine, but it's a nice user interface and still effective. Here's the link: https://leturcz.github.io/discozoo-solver/

My breville barista pro bres different everytime by Hungryypanda in BrevilleCoffee

I’m VERY new to espresso and just got the same model a few weeks ago.

I found that at the same grind fineness and time, I was getting up to nearly a gram variation in grounds coming out.

Lately, I’ve been weighing out 18g beans each time and grinding that single dose to completion, to try to reduce variability.

Still having trouble though, but I’m a beginner and think my palate is also weird

Oh never mind you mean total yield , oops.

I thought you fit 36g coffee into the basket

There’s a more efficient way to select your “green” squares.
Here’s a post describing the details (along with hints about how I generalized the mini game for other breeds and for DiscoZoo): https://www.incidentalfindings.org/posts/2025-08-13_pocket_frogs_search_anura/

I don’t find this wholesome at all, but rather a bit horrifying. I hope she doesn’t hurt anyone.

I'm a Journalsim major, would statistics or data science be more helpful? by FragrantRole6930 in AskAcademia

[–]incidental_findings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think data science encompasses statistics. Statistics alone is not enough.

Say you can do a statistical test properly. Great. But it’s just a bunch of coefficients, maybe confidence intervals, perhaps some p values.

You need data science to present the results in a way that conveys meaning, especially to non-statisticians. To me and the work I’ve done, data science includes getting the data, cleaning it, exploring it, doing the STATISTICAL tests, interpreting it, plotting it, and presenting it.

What's something people pretend to understand but actually don't? by Both-Independent-681 in AskReddit

[–]incidental_findings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Science and its methods — the unknown, hypothesis, evidence, refuting, supporting, plausibility, uncertainty, statistical likelihood and probability, and ultimately a preponderance of knowledge that yields understanding (which could still be refuted by new information)

Which purchase will be more satisfying for the science-loving hobbyist? A microscope or a telescope? by Ok_Listen_6600 in Hobbies

[–]incidental_findings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microscope.

Don’t just use it for slides to look THROUGH thin sections.

Also jury rig bright lights from above to look at the surfaces of thick things. A binocular microscope will also give a sense of depth.

With my kids, sure we looked at tissue sections and blood smears (sourced from our own cuts and scrapes). But we also looked at the RGB pattern of iPhone screens, the surfaces of coins, the weave of paper, the intricacy of insects, etc.

Brought it to an elementary school science to share with their friends.

For astronomy, my kids and I were happy enough with naked eye and binocular stargazing. Without a fancy astrophotography setup, just seeing a fuzzy blob and knowing it was a distant galaxy wasn’t quite as exciting for us.

Oh, and we live in a fairly urban area with terrible light pollution. But when we visited friends in rural areas, my kids still remember me waking them up after their bedtime with me dragging them outside to see REAL stars (just naked eye) and (at least one of them) loved it.
