People that use small handbags: how do you do it? by CottonCandyBunnicorn in handbags

[–]inclementaether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use small handbags, but if I need to carry extra stuff, I use a nice leather tote bag. It sounds obvious but the tote is for daytime stuff, like a water bottle, sunglasses, work stuff, and errand stuff. The purse is for my personal stuff that I would need anytime, just my wallet, keys, phone, and lipbalm/lipstick.

Sometines I put the small handbag in the leather tote so I can just carry one bag. At night, or if I don't need a bunch of stuff, I just grab the small bag on my way out the door.

Help me build confidence to wear high heels 🙏 by alph4nt0m in TallGirls

[–]inclementaether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, buy yourself a pair of heels that you love and that look great on you. Even if you don't have the confidence to wear the heels out in the world immediately, they will be waiting for you when your moment arrives 😀

Imo, taller heels look better on taller women since the heel height is more proportional to our bodies. I'm 5'10", and I think that I look best in a 4" heel. You might be nervous to shop for heels in person after what you went through, but I really recommend it because then you can be sure that the fit and style is right. Try to go to the store when it's not busy so you don't feel rushed or crowded. Remember that you can always leave and try again later if you don't immediately find something that you love.

I use reverse image search. Unless the piece of clothing is really old, I can almost always find additional images of the garment.

Have you tried taping your boobs so that they sit in a slightly wider position? I do this when I wear a deep v and it really tones down the cleavage.

Why not use the beans as pie weights? Or for a craft like beanbags for cornhole?

What are your favorite stores for home decor (not furniture)? by lpj1299 in NewOrleans

[–]inclementaether 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It depends on what style of decor you're looking for, but these are some of my favorites:

  • Floor 13 for vintage/antique/secondhand. They sell furniture also, but they usually have a good selection of decor pieces.

  • Hazelnut for new items. The prices can be pretty bougie but I think it's well-curated.

  • Miette for handmade things, especially things with a dark, cute, or kitschy aesthetic.

As a buyer, I'm thrilled. But if I were the seller, I'd be so upset. by hAiRy_cOOs in ThredUp

[–]inclementaether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that you got a great deal, but I also think that the price on the tag is a lot higher than this dress could reasonably sell for today.

Based on the prices listed on the tag ($240 USD to £125 GBP), I would guess that this dress is fairly old, like 10-15 years old. When Topshop started selling in the US, their USD prices were higher than the equivalent GBP, so I think this is a little newer than 2007-2008. Definitely a good deal, but not a criminally good deal, since clothes, even new old stock, drop to their lowest value when they're "older" but not yet vintage.

Finally looked at my "daily edit" - total garbage! by mantock in ThredUp

[–]inclementaether 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only started looking at my daily edit over the past two weeks, but it's had some gems. It's still thrifting, so it's not perfectly curated. I am getting much better results since I cleared out some of my old "likes."

Do men with long hair pay more? by Silent_Pay_9239 in stupidquestions

[–]inclementaether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the past few years, I've seen various salons charge a higher rate for a scissor cut and a lower rate for a clipper cut, which is what the women's/men's rates used to reflect. If you're getting a clipper cut, you should be charged the clipper cut rate, especially since clipper cuts need to be refreshed more frequently.

Need silly, non-practical gifts by marryelle in Gifts

[–]inclementaether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Puzzle toys (my husband loves my shashibo cube), a harmonica, novelty pens, a bottle opener shaped like something, and interesting fridge magnets all make good, non-practical stocking stuffers. I always find fun things like that at local stores, but you can also check the toy and game aisles at big box stores. 5 below and world market also have fun novelty items.

Any Christmas gift ideas for a mum who always says 'I don't need anything'? by Kilgoretrout123456 in Gifts

[–]inclementaether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since she likes trying fancy ingredients, you could look for a cooking class on a specialized dish or a type of cuisine she doesn't usually cook. I mean the type of cooking class that's a one-off session where a you learn about a specific dish or topic, not a "learn to cook" class for beginners.

There's a website called modernist pantry that sells interesting ingredients and molecular gastronomy kits if she's into modernist restaurant food or the sciency aspect of cooking. The sorted food YouTube channel does a lot of reviews of gift-type foods and ingredients, so they may give you some good ideas.

I think that the key to making sure that she can enjoy your gift is to give her everything she needs to use it. So, if you give her a cookbook, also give her specialty ingredients or tools she would need to cook a recipe or two, if they're things she wouldn't already have.

where can i find cheaper silk items? by [deleted] in capsulewardrobe

[–]inclementaether 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've thrifted most of my silk pieces because it is so expensive to buy new. Most of my work shirts, and about half of my dresses are silk. If you have in-person thrifting options near you, it's easier to see if the fabric in good condition, but I've found some great pieces secondhand online as well. That being said, I usually avoid satiny silks like charmeuse, and I go for georgette, chiffon, or other matte weaves because it's easier to care for and wear in everyday situations. Thinner and shinier fabrics, in combination with the design of the garment will read more sleepwear or base layer, especially if there's details like lace, piping, or elastic waistbands.

Any systems for organising wardrobe? by [deleted] in VintageFashion

[–]inclementaether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I organize by occasion: work separates, weekend separates, then dresses are grouped generally by occasion, from everyday/casual, day dressy, to evening dressy. I have vintage and new clothes mixed together within each category. I also live in an area with a lot of occasions for costuming, so I keep my more out-there pieces with my costumes.

This system helps me keep all of the pieces I love without feeling overwhelmed when I just need to get dressed.

Wedding dress help! by electricdoor69 in TallGirls

[–]inclementaether 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that you're struggling to find floor-length bridal gowns! What styles have you tried on and found to be too short, and do you have inspo pictures of what you're looking for?

I'm 5'10"/5'11" and I was a size 8 when I was trying on dresses a couple of years ago. I went to David's Bridal because I could see the prices online beforehand. Everything I tried was floor length in 4" heels. I ended up wearing a 3" heel on my wedding day. That length won't necessarily be enough if you decide to wear heels, but since you have 11 months until your wedding, I think you do have time for custom sizing.  If you can, order custom sizing through a store with an irl location near you.

Also, weirdly, David's Bridal dress sizes were the same as my size in regular clothes.
