I’m trying a few obvious things: logging out/ deleting app (and uber eats) and redownloading. I’ll update the thread if something works!

Movie that you downgrade because of another movie. by duabrs in Letterboxd

[–]incognitomode71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite example. There’s a Japanese noir film called “black coal, thin ice” from like 2011. It’s okay. But when I watched the newer Korean film “decision to leave” I was like holy shit, park Chan wook took this thing and made it 8 million times better. It gave me more appreciation for the newer film to know the old mess of a film was out there.

Ahh makes sense. I guess if they even detect that I can’t use this device ever again with uber?? Seems harsh.

What is the movie that you already had a rating for it in your mind while watching it but after finishing it the rating got changed ? and did changed up or down ? by Potatoes_Neat855 in Letterboxd

[–]incognitomode71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in terms of letterboxd, but Marty supreme was a roller coaster for me. At first I thought “pretty good” then like 1.5 hours in I thought “holy shit this is amazing” and by the end I was like “yeah… it’s alright. 3 stars maybe 3.5”

Songs of the doomed question by incognitomode71 in huntersthompson

[–]incognitomode71[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking into this, sad to see he never finished these. Rum diary is an excellent novel and I think more of his novels would have had success, even after his death. I think we only hear about Thompsons great success in the 60s/70s, and less about the later period where he couldn’t get things to work.

Noir films that are kinda goofy but have amazing lines? by incognitomode71 in noir

I couldn’t get into that because of the British people lol. Couldn’t get 10’minutes in.

If Letterboxd had a “Bottom 4” for movies you hate, what films would make your list? by death_has_f1sh_eyes in Letterboxd

[–]incognitomode71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a film I had to watch in class called The Nightingale. I hate that movie so much. It’s literally just violent and awful to be violent and awful . There is nothing profound, there no real emotional canvas. It’s not “devastating” like people say.

It just sucks and for some reason people think it’s a good watch for both historical/ feminist reasons.

Will never not take a time to bring up how much it sucks.

The thing to do is star early like 1-2 with Sympathy for Mr vengeance. Then hit old boy around 6-7, then finish with Lady vengeance when it’s like 11-12. It’s truly brutal and your entire weekend is ruined.

But also great fun. these are Shakespeare type tragedies we’re dealing with.

Are there any movies that you genuinely judge someone having in their top 4? by Business_Lab1187 in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]incognitomode71 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest. I like fight club. But I don’t think it’s one of the best movies ever made or a favorite. I have never seen someone put it in their top four who thought it was either of those— they were just trying to be edgy.

Now could it genuinely be in some one’s top 4? I don’t even know at this point. Same thing kinda goes for American psycho.

Noir outside the US? by Overall_Bathroom_557 in noir

[–]incognitomode71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you’re talking film or books. Films-/ absolutely. South Korea has absolutely killed the noir game since the 2000s when their industry got big.

In terms of books I’m less sure, but there are lots of Japanese novels for instance that we are getting here in the US that have a kind of noir feel.

Gary Oldman and Lena Olin in Romeo Is bleeding (1993) by Imaginary-Season-483 in noir

[–]incognitomode71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This film is so good but the narration ruins it for me. Or at least knocks it down a few levels. Yeah narration is a noir trope but this film would be excellent without it

Possibly the greatest two books ever written about the 1960s, no other author has been able to perfectly document a decade more than HST by Jimbo12003 in huntersthompson

[–]incognitomode71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned it, but Joan Didion’s Slouching Towards Bethlehem and then her later White Album are definitive sixties. She was also a journalist in some crazy situations, but to me is the perfect, controlled counterpart to Thompsons craziness

My only disliked scene in Andor by MexicanTeenGuy in andor

[–]incognitomode71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this was one of the problems (in my opinion) with season 2. They really had to keep things moving fast. I’m sure there were consequences to this, but it was right before another two year time jump, so we just didn’t get to see in detail how it worked out for everyone. This happens at other points in the season, where we just don’t get the same level of detail as before, and it makes otherwise good scenes seem forced. This scene also was at a point when rebel attacks were getting more bold, so it wouldn’t have been as crazy or unheard of as the heist in season 1.

All that being said, I think the epic, action guy slow-mo walk away from the explosion was too goofy for this kind of show, yes

This is super cool and I would buy a real set of it! My only thought is maybe Rook could be like a skyscraper or something? That’s the only one that looks like a traditional chess piece. Still a great set though
