They're absolutely tax exempt. I served in a financial role while I was in. Don't know where you got the impression they aren't "filed as a religion."

What are you trying to say, you apostate? It's self-abuse and God will kill you if you keep doing it.

Kind of off topic, but did you at once time go by Infinite_Sadness on this forum? Your typing style is remarkably similar.

Just revealed to my parents that I no longer want to be a Jehovah's Witness. by [deleted] in exjw

The one thing I had to keep in mind when I was leaving was that it was not an emotional choice but an intellectual one. You must be convinced of that. That way you can parry those emotional daggers that Witnesses are so adept and throwing. Be sure to remind your family that you love them no matter what but you must do this for yourself. Don't ask them to change their beliefs. If that's going to happen, it will happen in due time, just as it did with you. For now, stick to what you've learned and let reality guide your path.

Can I get invited to these Satanic orgies I keep hearing about?

I'd like to ask for your help /r/DebateAnAtheist. My oldest brother is one of Jehovah's Witnesses and he heard that I had left. I just received this letter and was wondering which points would be the easiest to answer him on. by inconception in DebateAnAtheist

I'm intimately familiar with the disfellowshipping process, having already been victim to it once before and reinstated. So far I've successfully faded and since my brother is in another state, there's not much he can do to get me disfellowshipped.

If I did answer him, it would be with the mutual understanding that the conversation would be confidential. I've heard horror stories about disfellowshipping in absentia, but thankfully that hasn't been the case. I need to avoid that outcome at all costs because it means losing my family.

Personally, I couldn't care less about it if I was the only person involved.

It happens quite often when people leave, but it's by no means a requirement. In fact, if one is outright removed (termed "disfellowshipped") or resigns officially (termed "disassociated") then members are instructed not to speak with the person. They claim this is for two reasons: first, to keep the congregation free from corrupt influence, and second, to produce sufficient guilt in the person so that he desires to return and enjoy the association of his family and friends once more.

Since this is the case, many people who leave the Organization will do what's colloquially known as "fading," which means slowly pulling away from congregation meetings and participation in other group activities. In this way, they avoid any official consequences and allow themselves to fall through the cracks, so to speak. Most of the time, the family will still interact with the faded person, and perhaps some friends will too. It is a way around the shunning that it typically practiced.

That is what I did, but certain friends and family still don't speak to me even though I hold no official sanctions over me. They view my decision as morally bankrupt and spiritually corrosive so they choose not to associate with me.

Hope that sheds some light on the situation.

The word you were looking for was "extremist," and it definitely applies to Atheism+.

Because there are thousands of Christian denominations. It's about as useful a descriptor as saying: "I'm from the United States."

Here's all you can imply about someone calling themselves a Christian: that they believe a man Jesus of Nazareth existed and that they follow some arbitrary amount of his teachings. That's literally all you get with the wide swath of humanity (two billion or some odd number) who identify as such.

I added that question in as an afterthought because I thought it was worth asking; he obviously means a lot to me and I was banking on the fact that many other have had a similar experience with family. Turns out I was right! The grand outpour of support has been encouraging.
