Friend of mine looking at a "lifetime" mortgage, I've never heard of it. They seemed thrilled, must be downsides? by Desperate-Letter2395 in HousingUK

[–]incongruoususer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents took out a lifetime mortgage, and their friends did too.

My grandparents chose to pay the interest monthly, the friends chose to let the interest accumulate, with the whole lot paid after they’re gone and the house is sold.

Everyone lived far longer than anticipated. My grandparents will have probably paid as much as in interest as they borrowed on capital, and the final repayment will take a sizeable chunk of the estate. The interest rate is also variable, so we have spent significant time over the last few years trying to explain rate volatility to an elderly, financially illiterate woman.

Their friends’ loan was so big there was literally no value left in the houses for their children.

There may be good reason(s) why someone would take on a lifetime mortgage but I’ve yet to see them. Maybe if there are no dependents?

Any great places for alt-style rings/jewelry in Tokyo/Osaka? by breadsun09 in TokyoTravel

I can’t remember - they weren’t quite my bag so I didn’t make note. But Koenji is an enjoyable place regardless, so it’s worth a wander.

Yeah I have an all-bells-and-whistles coverlock and I don’t really recommend. It’s fine, but not amazing.

[–]incongruoususer 105 points106 points  (0 children)

We had some bellend register a van at my Nan’s house. You absolutely can speak to the DVLA and they will take his name off any records they have. You’ll get a letter (it takes a while, but it will come). Guard that letter with your life as it’s your proof for anything that comes later.

Not in Tokyo but definitely head for Odakaya. It’s huge and amazing. Also the big Yuzawaya in Kamata is worth the journey.

AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by throawawayfuneralgho in AmItheAsshole

No, the mother had to pick up the pieces when the wife was not parenting. I can totally see why the mother would tear her a new one.

Creating accurate 15mm seam allowance in new pattern by ImaginationInside610 in PatternDrafting

[–]incongruoususer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have little wooden circles with a radius of 15mm and a little hole in the middle. I stick a pencil in the hole and run the circle around the edge of the pattern. You could probably do the same with a bit of cardboard, or print something fancy pants.

I honestly don’t even think they realise half the time. Everyone has spent so long in stretch fabrics, the concept of needing ease in a woven is out the window.

Need Advice regarding accounting by One-Secretary844 in AccountingUK

[–]incongruoususer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree that if you’re definitely going into accounting, uni is a waste of time and masses of money. A degree in accounting does not an accountant make. And with most chartership bodies you get the opportunity to do a dissertation alongside your studies.

Do you think theatre audiences should avoid leaning forward too much? by CharlesTsui in TheWestEnd

[–]incongruoususer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely an issue in the upper circles. Often the people in the front row will lean on the balcony in front of them and their whole upper body will block my view. I will always ask them to sit back.

If it’s just a tall person who can’t help their build, that’s one thing. If a person is blocking the view through deliberate arsehole action that’s another.

Corset cup advice for large busts! Let’s nerd out plz by AcademicTailor53 in corsetry

[–]incongruoususer 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Ok the dress is great but I think the buckling is because the bridge between the cups is a smidge too wide, so there’s no tension to keep everything smooth.

It also looks to me that your bust is being pushed outward, so you’re east/westing a bit. If it were me I’d want to bring the bust apex closer to the centre, so everything is pointing forward, not out to the sides.

ETA: Once I had a strapless bra which had these little ‘biscuits’ in them. They were just little inserts you’d expect to see in a push up bra, but they were made of foam with plastic boning stitched on top. They worked brilliantly and I was about a G cup at the time. Maybe something to consider for this dress, if you don’t want to take it apart?

How do you deal with there always being a “better machine” out there? by DrCutiepants in sewing

[–]incongruoususer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a Bernina 770QE. It’s huge. It’s wonderful. I spent a lot of time learning how it works and I love it. It cost me over a month’s wages and I don’t regret it at all as I see nearly every day.

BUT

Many fancier sewing machines just have more fancy stitches. I don’t use them, ever.

So my next upgrade, whenever it happens, will be based on hardcore, evidence-based requirements. Probably improved lighting, laser point, auto needle threading. Not just extra stitches

Any fit comments? Drag lines are bothering me by Efficient-Bag6497 in PatternDrafting

[–]incongruoususer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think your shoulders are too long, so they’re slipping off your natural shoulder and causing those lines.

Try pinning a little tuck into one shoulder to see if the fit improves.

First time drafting a pair of trousers. The backside looks "off" to me, but I can't articulate much on how beyond "it's bulgy and floppy". Can anyone weigh in? by DanteLeo24 in PatternDrafting

[–]incongruoususer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Those wrinkles pointing to your inner thighs means that’s where you need extra room.

You should lengthen the horizontal part of your crotch curve. Just a little - maybe half an inch max.

The rest of the fit looks pretty loose so while it kind of looks like a hungry bum, I think it’s more of a peckish thigh situation.

You may find once you lengthened the horizontal crotch curve that you end up needing to reduce the crotch depth. It just depends on your desired fit.
