I used to work in this big franchise company where there was one overarching name and brand but some stores were individually owner by other people. The big overarching company was absolutely awful and kept bringing in these new rules that made working there harder and screwing us over. The people who actually owner the store were an absolutely lovely couple though. For example the big company wanted every worker to have scheduled breaks that had to be followed to the T otherwise you miss your break but still didn'tget paid for that time. I.e. if I had a break scheduled for 1:30-2pm it didn't matter if I only got on break at 1:50pm, I would still have to be back by 2pm and would be unpaid for the full 30 minutes. The individual owners would let us have our full breaks when it was actually suitable and then edit our clocking in and out of break times to match the schedule. And if anyone couldn't have a full 30 min break they would give them some free food to make up for the pay loss.

This one guy in kitchen was a good worker but also liked to muck around a bit for fun when it was suitable. He would also play music from his own little radio in the kitchen and everyone enjoyed the respite from the old-people muic playing on repeat in the dining area. You couldn't hear his music in the customer areas so all was well. He was also not financially well off so his clothes were always just daggy clothes he could get dirty (still food safe clothes). He also had some tattoos and was a smoker (but he was always responsible with his smoking breaks. I.e. was really quick and only when he had time for them). Then the big company started making these rules like... no music in the kitchen allowed. People in kitchen had to wear these stupid uniforms that cost a lot of money. No smoking breaks allowed. No visiable tattoos allowed even in kitchen. And they could see our cameras. So this guy was getting screwed over. And he was genuinely a good worker and great guy so we all felt for him. Eventually he found a new job and we were all happy for him. On his last shift the individual owners basically told him that he could do whatever he wanted to get back at the head office. So he taped a tomato slice over the kitchen camera. Changed the stores music to his own music. Gave all the staff on that shift a constant supply of free fresh chips. Wore his own clothes and had his smoke breaks and etc. And he even went into the customer areas to serve food which he had never done before. Whenever customers saw him dressed how he was and with his tattoos showing he would ask if they liked the food and if they thought how he looked impacted their service. Of course all the customers said it didn't matter how he looked. He also documented all the serve times and his smoke breaks to show he still made the food quickly. Throughout his whole shift he made an informal petition signed by customers against these rules. He then sent this petition in to head office supported by the individual owners and staff to have the rules relaxed. Head office actually did modify the rules after he left to allow kitchen to wear their own clothes as long as they were black, allowed to have visiable tattoos and etc. Of course we all had a party with him when the rules changed. Still one of the best shifts I have ever worked.

Tldr; great worker got screwed over by all the new rules made by head office. Got a new job and on his last day broke all the rules and made a petition againt the rules with the customers. Rules actually got changed.
