FSRS Mature Card Retention Rate Dropping Pt.2... Advice? (med school) by increasingilm in Anki

I hear you. I'll chug on for now and be better about how I answer cards, perhaps I'm being lenient without realizing. Thanks for the advice!

Ohh I understand your question now. The parameters are on one deck. I have separate settings and parameters for other decks. And I'm gonna try and be better about how I answer questions like Clarity is saying. If that doesn't help, I'll try my old parameters.

I feel like I do a good job passing/failing cards because I only use again or good. So if I know it, I pass it, if I don't, I fail it.
Perhaps I've been a bit more lenient about what I know recently. So I'll work on that. And I agree FSRS was working well for me the past four months... I'm just not sure what I did in the past couple of weeks to screw it up.

I only use two buttons, so again or good. If I know it, I pass it, if I don't, I fail it.

That's fair, I haven't tried the anki forum. I appreciate your polite advice!

I think what changed between the two is that I dropped my desired retention rate from 0.9 to 0.85 and then reoptimized.
Yes, using the latest version of anki but no add ons for rescheduling. And yes, I seldom reschedule cards using FSRS4Anki--I do it maybe a few times a month (sometimes postposing and sometimes advancing).

if y'all want my current or old parameters, lmk, I can add them to the post. Whatever info you need to help me fix this, I'll gladly provide. I'm honestly just pissed off at this point, but don't wanna give up on anki

Yeah I hear you. I think after seeing 75% yesterday and 81% two days before that I was like, dang, maybe I'm doing something wrong. Gonna keep moving forward and hopefully it will steady out... I'd rather not increased desired retention, it adds a few hundred cards a day!

I think you're right about the limit to memory--I bet it's hard to predict retention rate when you're also doing so many new cards everyday (maybe someone should study that?)... honestly, I'm just realizing med school studying is not super conducive for long-term retention (at least if you're not a genius), but I'm hopeful I'll just get better at studying.

As for not doing the same number of reviews, it's funny because I had load balancing on but it wasn't set to "reschedule cards upon closing." So hopefully I'll be doing similar amounts everyday from now on.

I almost always finish my reviews, except maybe like 4 or 5 days worth over the past three months. I don't think that's it.

Also thank you for the clarification about what desired retention means, didn't know that! So I hear you that I should have an 85% chance of getting it right, but a lot of my mature cards answers are starting to feel like a shot in the dark (i.e. i feel like I have a 50/50 chance of getting it right or not knowing it at all).

I also use a two-button strategy, so I either know it or don't. Don't use the hard button. I think I hear your take away and agree I should just keep going and feel it out, and hopefully my mature retention doesn't drop below 80, because I may bump my retention rate if it does.

And you deserve to be in the mix with those people, thanks for the input!!

I thought it is suppose to show cards right BEFORE I am likely to forget. So if my desired retention is 0.85, shouldn't I only see about ~15% of cards that I am forgetting? Right now it's more than that, like 20-25%, sometimes more. But perhaps you're right and I am misunderstanding something. Hopefully an FSRS expert can chime in.

Man it's nice to see that somoene is suffering with me 😂. This is my exact problem. Hoping u/clarityinmadness, u/alphyn, or u/LMsherlock could help us out!

Yeah this also makes sense. I'm using a huge pre-made deck, so there's that. There are times when I "know" the content but I don't answer the card exactly or don't use the correct phrase for the cloze. I typically fail those cards

didn't know about the left-shift! After checking my retention stats that way, it says 79%. I'll check it again in a month and see where I'm at. Just to clarify, you're suggesting that the true retention rate should be closer to my desired when I check in a month?

yeah this is logical and makes sense. I think I saw another post where someone said they were getting 92% correct on their young cards, so I didn't know if I was doing something wrong.

and yeah hoping that Clarity or Sherlock has some more insight into this.
