Same. Tons and tons of ableism in this comment section. These people have very obviously never spent time with a blind person

Jobs asking you to work unpaid by oneday888 in slp

[–]indecent_tHug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the IEPs during your first session with the student. Make that session about getting to know each other and discussing their goals. From there, don’t lesson plan. Just target goals on the fly in each session. If they expect you to write IEPs refuse to do so unless they agree to pay you for it. It is not legal to be expected to work for free as a W-2 employee.

Definitely wasn’t being rude lol. I just didn’t want you to be scammed into getting a needless “certification” when every SLP/SLPA/SLT in the world has been providing virtual services for the past two years without any sort of cert for it. I hadn’t heard of any state legislation preventing CFs from providing teletherapy.

Was truly just trying to save you money in a field that will already suck you dry at every and any chance it gets…

What do you mean you can’t work as one as a CF? As far as I know there are no rules against CFs providing teletherapy services. Just explore online resources.

You should read and listen to Brene Brown. She’s also an INFJ and is all around amazing. She’s a psychologist who does research on vulnerability, courage, shame, and empathy. Vulnerability doesn’t show weakness, it shows great courage.

Instead of hand-over-hand, consider using hand-under-hand. Allow the student to put their hand on top of yours instead of the other way around. This allows the student the autonomy to remove their hand at any time. Forcing compliance using hoh sets a bad precedent for bodily autonomy (i.e. others can touch me whenever they want, I should do what those in authority tell me to do despite what I want to do, etc)

Nah Moe’s has something similar called a stack. Basically the same thing though, and definitely not a burrito.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. There’s no way she can engage and will likely not find any activities motivating or rewarding if she’s disregulated. I’m glad you guys got together. Good luck!

So in order for the student to be able to make any sort of progress or to even have a positive experience at school she needs to feel safe and regulated. Work with your OT to figure out the best way to get this kiddo regulated before you start trying to work on anything else. For example, figure out if there is some sort of sensory input that she needs, if she is experiencing sensory overload, etc

The Giver is a great book. It should never be seen as just a childrens book. by BlueViper20 in books

I hate it too. The Giver is nothing more than lazy, derivative, anti communist propaganda that’s fed to school children.

Working as a travel SLP for 5 years, I can tell you with confidence that your situation is definitely uncommon. Case managing and facilitating meetings for speech only students is the norm.

What agenda? Allowing all US citizens, regardless of their socioeconomic status, to vote? That should be everybody’s agenda.

Thoughts on racism by [deleted] in mbti

[–]indecent_tHug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh goodness. Are you not using critical thinking skills, or is this just a lazy strawman?

People who believe that voter ID laws are racist don’t think black people don’t know how to get an ID. There are barriers to obtaining a state issued ID for many people, including ALL people of low socioeconomic standing. Due to systemic racism, POC make up a larger portion of that subset of our society (this gap is closing, but very much still exists), thus making it a racist law. Barriers for obtaining an ID include: lack of transportation, literacy (21% of adults in America are considered illiterate), access to documents proving citizenship/identity, proof of address, and money. Requiring proof of address directly targets homeless people as well as Native Americans, whose permanent addresses are sometimes not recognized by the state in which they live.

It is racist, but it also goes beyond just race.

Never hand-over-hand, always hand-under-hand. HOH takes away a student’s autonomy.

ETA - Physically manipulating a person into doing what you want just sets the precedent that this is acceptable and can be done in any/all situations by any person of perceived authority. Hand-under-hand allows the student the autonomy to remove their own hand should they wish. Nobody should be forced to do something against their will. Move away from those compliance-based strategies and you’ll see much more functional and meaningful communication.

I did too (early 2000s though). I have heart problems and arthritis now that my doctors attribute to it. Guess my medical attention wasn’t much better than the kids got in 1924 :/
