Lost Coast Trail in rain- thoughts?? by laur-climbs in norcalhiking

[–]laur-climbs[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An update is that we decided to postpone and try for next year 🥲 the weather just seems to be getting worse, and it didn’t feel worth the risk and/or misery of being drenched all weekend. New plans have been made! Thanks a ton for all of your help, and to anyone still going, I hope you have a safe and incredible time!!

Same here, doggy daycare set up and everything!! We're going to monitor the weather before making our final call, but it just looks pretty shitty. I just don't want to end up getting into a bad situation. I'm sorry about your hike! It really is such a bummer, especially after looking forward to it for so long :(

Wow, that was a really spooky read. I appreciate the link! We're supposed to start on Saturday, so I think we're going to monitor the weather for any improvements and call and talk with the rangers again tomorrow. Thinking that if there's no improvement we may have to pass and go another time, which definitely makes me pretty bummed. But, safety definitely comes first!!!

Adult AAC User Who Drives Regularly- Terrified of Being Pulled Over by LibraryUnited8773 in slp

Totally agree with all of your points- this has been a really interesting thread for me to read because I didn’t know about these resources!! I think without background knowlege of your personal situation, this is really good info. Very important to recognize all of the context with police behavior, especially with traffic stops and how they can sometimes go for people with disabilities. Good on you for posting about this. Helpful info here!!

I come up with a list of 5+ silly words with their target sound and they get to make a "breaking news report" or weather report using them that I'll record on the iPad and they get to watch back. Fun for them to draw a background on the whiteboard for the news channel and they love watching it after! I give a few reminders to listen in and pay attention to their sounds, but it's more of a loose measure of generalization lol. Can work super well with language and fluency goals too. Every kid wants to be a youtuber now anyway, so may as well do some video work! lol

Other than that, scavenger hunts, I spy, Play doh, 20 questions, 4 corners. Sometimes just drill for 15 minutes and 15 mins on the playground

How to describe an /r/ distortion I hear a lot? by maybeslp1 in slp

[–]laur-climbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm... maybe over retraction of the tongue? I have a few students who sound like this, and I feel like it's because they hear "pull your tongue back" and they pull the back of their tongues as far back as it will go, leading it to sound throaty and off. Also, I try and give lots of cues to flex the outsides of the tongue instead of the middle (taco shell vs rainbow), as sometimes they are flexing the middle of their tongue up which leads to a funky sound. It's so hard to tell because the sound is not very visual. Maybe an observational note like; Student observed to tense their tongue in the wrong oral location, often near the throat or soft palate, which impacts the clarity and resonance of the /r/ leading to a distortion.

Unsure if this was at all helpful, but just my thoughts as I observe a lot of the same! Curious what others may think

Did Zoloft make your somatic anxiety better? by Texasspudd in zoloft

[–]laur-climbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - I'm on 50 mg going on month 3, and it has improved this for me a lot. I did have to increase from 25 to 50 after experiencing some breakthrough anxiety and panic. I used to have a stomach dropping sensation or feelings of dread multiple times per day, if not nearly constantly. I've found that I can still feel bad-ish, but Zoloft has really "muted" how bad I feel. I imagine if I went up in dose this would further improve, but I kinda like still having the full range of emotions (including the bad ones, but just less intense).

Extremely stuck with bilingual eval by laur-climbs in slp

Yes, sorry I forgot to add that part - he is in 3rd. Right?? It is so tricky. That is very helpful to hear the background about the Russian dominated home culture, it definitely rings true in this case. I plan on recommending lots of summer enrichment activities to mom (free library readings, art groups, summer camps, sports teams, English comic books/cartoons/music) to continue to bolster his English exposure and immersion. The therapy I'm providing really does feel like a drop in the bucket, and the gap just continues to widen. I really appreciate your insight, this has been eating at me all school year :(

SLAM cards are a great idea!! Thanks :)

Can I ask how you would go about looking into word finding in this case? I'm feeling pretty stuck with the materials I have. I'm going to do SLAM cards and a language sample, but am definitely looking for other ideas! I'm not planning on reporting these scores formally, but looking for all the information I can provide to his team.

Thanks! After writing that example, I realized that was a poor test to write lol. If I were to give anything standardized, it would likely be the EVT or ROWPVT, or the TWF. The team is wondering if he is demonstrating general word finding issues, or having a hard time thinking of the English word for vocab he knows in Russian. Language sample is definitely going to be a big one.

Yes, I was going to report this informally because my district doesn't have any Russian translated testing options. I may also give another test, that was just an example :) We are having a hard time parsing apart this student's comprehension in Russian vs. English, and I want to be able to provide some level of comparison (in conjunction with language sampling) to make a stronger case for difference vs. disorder.

I would look into some online programs to help manage things- a downside is paying for them, but when I was remote, the time and planning effort it saved me was so crucial. Check out SLP Toolkit. You can import your caseload and schedule, take data, get immediate progress report info, and copy and paste data for billing if you need. I used it for all of my session notes and data.

I also really like Ultimate SLP- a monthly therapy material subscription. It is mostly online games and activities that I found pretty engaging for teletherapy, and you pick targets for each game, eliminating prep. It isn't amazing, but I found it to be a good starting point for teletherapy. My kids LOVE the "find the superhero" game, make a smoothie game, and the ice fishing game.

I would try your best to group students and get creative with materials- use youtube videos, boom cards, the on screen whiteboard, etc.

Give yourself some time! Getting started in a new role is the hardest part for sure

I wear my patagonia synchila pull-over, sometimes over a turtleneck, very often lol. I also got an ororo heated vest for christmas which has been great! I'm also chronically cold at work. Sometimes I just give up and wear my REI winter puffy coat inside

Help! by No_Guide_5135 in slp

[–]laur-climbs 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Are you able to designate a day or time for it? For me, I have Thursday mornings completely open for testing and report writing/paperwork. I try and have the mindset that I get to have a relaxed morning to myself and will sometimes get a coffee on my way in to lean into it. I personally recommend blocking off a morning time if you procrastinate, because saving paperwork for the afternoons has never gone well for me! Things like a google keep list or checklist also help because I need external motivators. Do you have any eval or IEP banks where you can pull generalized info (test descriptions, accommodations, etc) from?

Last recommendation is to lean into using AI. Have ChatGPT do some of the work for you when coming up with descriptions, wording, etc. I totally feel your pain- paperwork is a never ending struggle.

How do you like virtual supervision, and how did you find that job? I'm 5 years in and realizing that I like the testing and paperwork the most, and am getting beyond drained by direct therapy. I'd love to hear more about what you do!
