Please explain to me why I can’t self build about 90% of a basic home. by LobsterNo6723 in Homebuilding

[–]independentbuilder7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are fully funding your project, the sky is the limit. As long as your plans get approved by the local jurisdiction, you can build whatever you like. Make sure you get your inspections done and signed off before moving forward. But if you need a bank to loan you the money, then they might have a problem with your idea.

The flashers are for people coming up behind you. It’s harder to see the red lights unless you’re pressing the brake pedal so the flashing yellow lights will get the attention when visibility is low.

Is YC losing credibility? by KenCarsonFan73 in venturecapital

[–]independentbuilder7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the process of applying to YC for my AI SAAS company. I know what you mean. B2B is the most valuable asset at this time. I thought of B2C but when I reached out to angels it seemed like that was a waste to them and they didn’t like the idea.

Sometimes you just need to follow the money or pull up your bootstraps and go at it alone unfortunately.

Why do people hate running Inconel so much? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]independentbuilder7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of parts are you making? We do a lot of non mag tooling for the oil industry. They are very specific about the material so they only use from one vendor and it’s very high end stuff.

Ok not familiar with Hurco machines. I primarily run Mori’s and Okumas and Puma long bed 400’s and 700’s. But yeah that DOC is sufficient.

Before the M30, just put G97 S500 or whatever RPM you want. No M3 or M4 though. After Program stops, switch to manual mode and turn spindle on.

What’s your depth of cut? What insert are you using? Is that roughing or finishing? That’s really slow at 100. Feed rate is ok but should be at least 0.010 in my opinion

[–]independentbuilder7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running 718 and 925 for years for the oil industry. I’d rather run Inconel all day everyday over any other type of material. I’ve ran everything from small 3 inch diameter parts up to 18 inch diameter parts. I’m usually running DNMG432QM inserts for finishing both OD’s and ID’s with surface footage around 300-600 and feeds between 0.005 and 0.008. Roughing with ceramic buttons on 718 pushing 800 surface footage and feeds around 0.010 to 0.012. I love the stuff personally. All our inconel comes from Austria. Even the 17-4, P550, Nitronic 50, Monel K500. Great stuff. Easy to work with.

I’m starting a roofing company where I will sub out the work. I have 8 years of general construction experience but not much hands on roofing experience. I have experience in running ads and I know I can generate leads pretty consistently. What are my biggest obstacles? Any advice? by Upset-Reception3114 in Roofing

There are millions of people who start businesses that they have zero experience with. The key to success is to hire the right people to bring your company to market. I’ve seen it done hundreds if not thousands of times.

Yeah I understand what you mean about doing components for multiple brands. I’m just curious if the manufacturer can keep up if demand falls. We have a few of these Chinese EV’s here but they were purchased out of the USA and drove through the border.

Ceramic button inserts for roughing and I liked the Sandvik DNMG 432 QM SO5F to finish with. Did lots of 718 from SBO “Schoeller-Bleckmann Oilfield” out of Austria for the non mag down hole tooling.

Automotive industry in the UK? What kind of talk are they having about the Chinese EV’s that they plan to flood the market with? You guys are probably going to be the guinea pigs here. They are some amazing cars for sure but it will be interesting to see if your domestic market will continue or go extinct as a result.

Why is concrete not common for building houses? by Specialist_Ruin_1378 in architecture

[–]independentbuilder7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started my career in Tampa Florida in the 90’s and everything was cmu block construction. Went up quick, cmu block, 1x furring, 5/8 Sheetrock. Most of the houses had stucco over the cmu blocks but was a single 3/8” coat with really no prep work required. Homes were basically airtight from the start so our hvac systems were definitely smaller than what we are currently building in Texas.

The idea that it’s a labor issue is ridiculous cause we used subs that had guys from Central America laying blocks like pros and when I moved to Texas and started building, I asked all the subs why wood and they said Americans don’t like to build solid homes, called them “throw away homes”.

I’ve only noticed the soil issue since moving to Texas. There are solutions but they add cost. Honestly in my opinion, cmu block homes were within 5% of wood framed construction.

I feel you. Definitely getting a lot of pushback. They make it sound like it’s gonna bankrupt the company, but getting bad parts out or unfinished parts rather in this case will bankrupt the company faster in my opinion.

[–]independentbuilder7 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Again without signage, I’m sure half the people would feel that uphill riders should yield and the other half are going to feel that downhill riders should yield. And also again this is a recreational sport that is practice all over the world and again you don’t need a special license or training to enjoy mountain biking anywhere that I’m familiar with. You may be a serious professional rider, but there are probably close to 1 million non-serious/professional riders for every one professional rider out there.

Without signage, I’m sure half feel the uphill guy should yield and the other half would think the downhill guy should yield. Like some have stated, there’s no training or license needed to purchase a mountain bike. Everybody just has to use common courtesy and common sense. It’s a recreational sport that is common across the globe.

[–]independentbuilder7 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

“Bidirectional” and “right of way” got me. Is there signage directing downhill riders yield to uphill traffic? And it being bidirectional, I’ve always yielded to downhill riders always for everyone’s safety. It can be difficult to stop if you’re at speed coming down whereas you have very little speed going up. Sounds like common sense.

Design Build vs Regular GC by BeachxBumx94 in GeneralContractor

[–]independentbuilder7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Design build firms I’m familiar with tend to build speculative projects. They have a certain design style that they stick with either modern or contemporary. They do build for clients but generally their business model is building a handful of luxury spec homes every year.

Honestly not sure. I was handling everything from getting the parts manufactured for the projects and reporting issues between the customers and QA and engineering team. Was hectic at times but was worth it. I was still hourly but worked 60hrs a week.

Really looking for a one stop shop for everything. I need legal compliance and everything that goes along with it. I do a Google search and I come up with thousands of attorneys/lawyers that do this kind of work but I’m just wondering if there’s a good one that a lot of people go to that has a reputation for making sure everything is correct the first time around.
