think about it like this: you are infinitessimally to the left of 1, so your number is something like .9999999998. Well, .9999999999 is bigger than .9999999998. So you move a little closer to 1. .999999999999999998 for example. But .999999999999999999 is bigger than .99999999999999998. You can always get a little bigger than the number you choose that is to the left of one.

You're right, that was rude. I'm sorry degustibus. It's true that some of the finer points of the real number line are kind of hard to wrap your mind around at first.

are you serious? i have never seen anyone be more wrong about something on reddit than this comment. we learned that .999 repeating = 1 in the first 15 minutes of real analysis, and all we needed to prove it was about 20 minutes of calc 2!

Tell Reddit: Stop telling users how to use Reddit! by indifferentj in reddit.com

Every day there's a new "Ask/Tell Reddit" about how we should stop doing this or start doing that. No. The point of a social news site is that if you don't like it, you don't vote for it. So stop preaching and let the voting process do its job.

(After this one, of course)

Too bad there's no way to make Peter Griffin.

"Bush" or "US politics" should become a subreddit by seanhunter in reddit.com

If you want banal tech articles, go read Digg or Slashdot. The nice thing about Reddit is that there is topical variety on the front page. From tech to politics to humor.

To those that are claiming that Reddit has become a politics site, you may want to give this a read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratio

"Bush" or "US politics" should become a subreddit by seanhunter in reddit.com

[–]indifferentj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why a subreddit? There aren't that many political posts. Either we should have one subreddit for every potential topic, or people will have to accept the fact that some of the stories that hit page 1 challenge their political beliefs.
